A personal narrative intervention combined with self-monitoring strategies: Outcomes for Mandarin-speaking adolescents with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Personal narratives play an essential role in children's social and academic development. However, children with Down syndrome have ongoing challenges with constructing and communicating personal narratives. METHODS: Using a single-case multiple-probe across participants design, we examined whether a targeted intervention could improve both micro- and macro-structural aspects of personal narratives from Chinese adolescents with Down syndrome. RESULTS: All three participants demonstrated high treatment effects in two macrostructural narrative outcomes (i.e., narrative element comp

Ethical and Legal Considerations in the Collection and Analysis of Mental Health Lived Experience Narratives: Reflections on 4 Case Studies of Research Practice.

Personal narratives describing lived experiences of the entire spectrum of mental health challenges are now widely available to the public, including through autobiographies from public figures, thematic collections of narratives assembled by mental health organizations, and individual narratives published on video sharing services. Mental health lived experience narratives have been used as an "active ingredient" in interventions intended to create change, such as in campaigns against mental health stigma. In the narrative inquiry research approach, they are used to explore mental health phen

An Autoethnographic Account of Familial Mediterranean Fever: A Turkish Patient's Discovery of Spiritual Meaning.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is a genetic autoinflammatory disorder characterized by recurrent febrile episodes that are accompanied by pain in the abdomen, chest, or joints caused by peritonitis, pleuritis, skin lesions, arthritis, and pericarditis. This original article aims to provide an analytic autoethnographic account of a Turkish patient's experience of FMF, with a focus on the discovery of spiritual meaning. In addition to discussing the grief reactions to a loss of health, the article uses self-reflexive discourse and narrative-based analysis to explore four stages of discovery

Not Eating or Tasting Other Ways to Live: A Qualitative Analysis of 'Living Through' and Desiring to Maintain Anorexia.

Whilst recent discussions of anorexia nervosa have recognised key aspects of the illness experience, such as control and emotion regulation, there remains a cross-disciplinary emphasis on body image concerns as central. In dialogue with clinical, psychological and social analyses, this paper draws on ethnography and qualitative interviews with individuals diagnosed with anorexia to offer an alternative perspective. Focusing on individuals' engagements with food and (not) eating suggests that material moments of starving, calorie counting, and thinking about food provide a critical lens onto wh

Distinct and Untamed: Articulating Bulimic Identities.

Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa are inextricably linked, with substantial clinical and epidemiological overlaps. Yet, while anorexia has been analyzed extensively in medical anthropology, bulimia remains under-theorized. This is, perhaps, because, compared to self-starvation, binge eating presents a logic of practice that is difficult to reconcile with culturally reified notions of self-control, transcendence, and hard work. Thus, although anthropologists have analyzed anorexic subjectivities as imbued with a sense of cleanliness and purity, moral superiority, and heroics, similar analyse

The demand to progress: critical nostalgia in LGBTQ cultural memory.

This article argues that, while representations of tragic lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) histories are disseminated widely, positive aspects of the past must be largely pushed out of the cultural imaginary to support a vision of the present in which sexual rights and freedoms have been achieved. It proposes that this view relies on a linear progress narrative wherein the experiences of LGBTQ people are held as consistently improving over time. In considering the construction of cultural memory through popular media and art, it claims a nostalgic turn to the past as a us

Extracting public opinion on typhoon disasters in China: a sina weibo case study of landfalling typhoon Muifa (2022).

This study investigates public opinion dynamics on Sina Weibo during Typhoon Muifa (2022), which made four landfalls in China. Using a dataset of 19,417 microblog posts, we employed Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling, sentiment analysis, and correlation statistics to characterize the evolution of public attention and discourse alongside the typhoon's activity. Results identified four dominant discussion topic categories: typhoon impact, weather conditions, meteorological information, and disaster response. Personal accounts predominantly contributed to the first two categories, w

The allocation of patients with personality disorders to a suitable treatment approach: The development of a checklist based on patients' life stories.

Treatment assignment for patients with personality disorders (PDs) involves a complex process consisting of diagnostic assessment and deciding on the most appropriate psychotherapeutic treatment. This article describes the development of a checklist for systematic analysis of life stories to support reflective and transparent assignment of patients to either dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) or schema-focused therapy (SFT). In a first study, an email survey, focus group, and member check were conducted among eight clinical experts to identify relevant dimensions in life stories in patients

Humanizing Pedophilia as Stigma Reduction: A Large-Scale Intervention Study.

The stigmatization of people with pedophilic sexual interests is a topic of growing academic and professional consideration, owing to its potential role in moderating pedophiles' emotional well-being, and motivation and engagement in child abuse prevention schemes. Thus, improving attitudes and reducing stigmatization toward this group is of paramount importance. Prior research has suggested that narrative humanization-presenting personal stories of self-identified non-offending pedophiles-could be one route to doing this. However, this work has only been conducted with students or trainee psy

Receiving the Gift of Life: Stories from Organ Transplant Recipients.

This symposium includes thirteen personal narratives from people who have received at least one organ transplant from a living or deceased donor. These narratives foster better understanding of the experiences of life-saving organ recipients and their families, including post-transplant difficulties experienced-sometimes requiring multiple transplants. This issue also includes three commentaries by Macey L. Levan, Heather Lannon, and Vidya Fleetwood, Roslyn B. Mannon & Krista L. Lentine. Dr. Levan is a living kidney donor and associate professor of surgery and population health. She writes

Global TALES feasibility study: Personal narratives in 10-year-old children around the world.

Personal narratives make up more than half of children's conversations. The ability to share personal narratives helps build and maintain friendships, promotes physical and emotional wellbeing, supports classroom participation, and underpins academic success and vocational outcomes. Although personal narratives are a universal discourse genre, cross-cultural and cross-linguistic research into children's ability to share personal narratives is in its infancy. The current study addresses this gap in the research by developing the Global TALES protocol, a protocol comprising six scripted prompts

Tele-Assessment of Oral Personal Narratives in Arabic- and Hebrew-Speaking Children Using the Global TALES Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Tele-assessment (TA) has the potential to enhance access to speech therapy. This preliminary study aimed to investigate the impact of assessment mode (face-to-face [FTF] vs. TA) on the microstructure level and chosen topics of personal narratives produced by Arabic-speaking and Hebrew-speaking school-age children living in Israel. We also investigated whether performance variations, if evident, could be attributed to the children's language/culture. METHODS: Eighty-nine 10-year-old children, 38 Arabic-speaking and 51 Hebrew-speaking, living in Israel, participated in this study.

'Closer to my world': Children with autism spectrum disorder tell their stories through photovoice.

One of the challenges in doing research with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the difficulty in communication. This study employed a modified form of photovoice with a group of young people with ASD in Hanoi, Vietnam, to provide a means of meaningful participation in research about their lives, experiences, and needs. We describe the process of conducting photovoice with nine children with ASD from June 2011 to May 2012, many of whom had limited verbal communication skills. More than 2100 photos were taken by children. Undertaking photovoice with children with ASD required so

Debilitated Lifeworlds: Women's Narratives of Forced Sterilization as Delinking from Reproductive Rights.

Peasant women in Cajamarca, Peru, who were sterilized by the Peruvian government in the 1990s, narrate their experiences of reproductive abuse using Andean medical principles of debilidad and fuerza (debility and strength) (Tapias 2006). In their narratives, many describe a generalized sense of loss of strength resulting from the procedure. This contrasts with the reproductive rights framework's emphasis on infertility as the main harm. In this article, I ponder the dissonance between these two frameworks and propose the concept of debilitated lifeworlds as decolonial feminist delinking (Migno

Personal recovery of young adults with severe anorexia nervosa during adolescence: a case series.

PURPOSE: Despite the emergence of a growing qualitative literature about the personal recovery process in mental disorders, this topic remains little understood in anorexia nervosa (AN), especially severe AN during adolescence. This cases series is a first step that aims to understand recovery after severe AN among adolescents in France, from a first-person perspective. METHODS: This cases series applied the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method to data collected in semi-structured face-to-face interviews about the recovery process of five young women who had been hospitalized
