Psychopathic personality disorder (PPD) is a widely researched construct characterized by severe dysfunction in affective, interpersonal and behavioral domains. Inconsistencies across different theoretical formulations and operationalizations have major implications for research and practice. Two separate personality-based perspectives of psychopathy have been proposed, one anchored within the influential five factor model (FFM) of personality and the comprehensive assessment of psychopathic personality (CAPP) model, which was specifically designed as an inclusive concept map of PPD. The curre

The Standardized Assessment of Personality, a semistructured interview for use with an informant, was used with a relative or a close friend to determine the premorbid personality of 100 consecutive patients admitted with major psychiatric disorders - major affective disorders (18 manics, 35 depressives), schizophrenia (28) and other functional psychoses (19). Forty-four per cent of the entire sample had an abnormal personality as defined by the presence of one of 10 prominent traits to a marked degree. A further 6% had the same traits to a lesser degree. The proportion of patients with an abn

BACKGROUND: Studies have criticized the low level of agreement between the various methods of personality disorder (PD) assessment. This is an important issue for research and clinical purposes.
METHOD: Seven hundred and forty-two participants in the Hopkins Epidemiology of Personality Disorders Study (HEPS) were assessed on two occasions using the Personality Disorder Schedule (PDS) and the International Personality Disorder Examination (IPDE). The concordance between the two diagnostic methods for all DSM-IV PDs was assessed using standard methods and also two item response analytic approac

Twenty-eight dysthymic patients (82.1% with personality disorders) were investigated with questionnaires for personality and depression before and after treatment. When in asymptomatic state, defined by clinical criteria and HAM-D score 6 or lower, the personality profile of 15 patients (group I) was significantly changed from the one before treatment (avoidant, passive-aggressive, borderline and schizotypal dimensions were lower, and narcissistic dimension higher [P < 0.01]). Thirteen patients (group II) had an unchanged profile. The first group showed significant state-trait dependence, espe

Changes in mood, affect, and personality may herald the onset of neurologic disturbances and may precede alterations in intellect and other cognitive operations. Reliance on traditional methods of assessment, especially in the elderly, will often produce misleading results and fail to measure critical constructs such as inappropriateness, indifference, and pragnosia. Evaluation of mood in elderly and cognitively impaired subjects is complicated by the high frequency of physical symptoms in these patients that also occur in depression and may inflate rating scale scores. Newer instruments tend

BACKGROUND: Personality functioning, also referred to as structural integration, describes basic emotion-related perception and regulation capacities directed towards the self and others. Patients with impairments of personality functioning experience difficulties in self-regulation and interpersonal relations. Although personality functioning has become increasingly important in psychotherapeutic and psychiatric diagnoses and treatment planning, there is little systematic evidence on the role of personality functioning in patients with chronic and somatic diseases. This article reviews empiri

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a clinically significant and extensively studied personality disorder (PD), associated with substantial impairment, risk, treatment needs, and health-system burden. Contemporary debates about its classification now occur within diagnostic systems that already move beyond purely categorical models, including ICD-11 and the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders. The central question is therefore not simply whether dimensional assessment should be incorporated into PD diagnosis, but how general personality disorder diagnosis, named categorical

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether personality disorders diagnosed during a depressive episode have long-term outcomes more typical of those of other patients with personality disorders or those of patients with noncomorbid major depression.
METHOD: The authors used 6-year outcome data collected from the multisite Collaborative Longitudinal Personality Disorders Study (CLPS). Diagnoses and personality measures gathered from the study cohort at the index assessment using interview and self-report methods were associated with symptomatic, functional, and personality measures at

This study assessed the results from the parallel application of two alternate personality models, the Zuckerman-Kuhlman trait model and Bond's Defense Styles, in a sample of 268 Greek medical students (172 women, M age = 22.0 yr., SD = 1.1; 95 men, M age = 22.3 yr., SD = 1.2) in relation to psychopathological symptoms, so as to clarify whether this practice yielded accurate results while avoiding shared variance. Data from both models are cross-checked with canonical correlation analysis to validate whether there was significant conceptual overlap between them that would mean that their paral

The dissociative disorder known as multiple personality disorder (MPD) presents a diagnostic challenge to psychological assessment techniques. A case example is presented in which a new self-report, multifactorial measure of ego functioning discriminated distinct profiles for four personalities within one multiple personality organization. Interpretations of characteristics of the primary and secondary personalities based on the Bell Object Relations Reality Testing Inventory (BORRTI) are presented. The relationship between these findings and other approaches to psychological testing for disso

Most research on personality disorders (PDs) relies upon self-reported information, commonly collected via standardized self-report inventories or structured interviews. Such data might, for instance, be culled from archival records from applied evaluative contexts or collected as part of dedicated anonymized research studies. Many factors-such as disengagement, distractibility, or motivation to appear in a certain manner-may influence whether self-reported information accurately reflects an examinee's genuine personality characteristics. Despite resultant risks to the validity of collected da

Indirect assessment is a useful tool in forensic evaluation, especially in cases of threat assessment. To this end, we illustrated the ability to conceptualize a complicated case (i.e., Theodore John Kaczynski) using an indirect approach, with a particular emphasis upon dimensional frameworks of personality. Raters who were unrelated to Mr. Kaczynski's case and with expertise in relevant domains were asked to study information available in the public domain about Mr. Kaczynski and provide ratings using several assessment instruments. Our aim was not to provide a professional clinical opinion,

This article demonstrates the contribution of Otto Kernberg's object relations theory of personality pathology to the current understanding of the nature and assessment of personality pathology and diagnosis. The article introduces recent advances in psychiatric nosology and presents differing views on the meaning of the general severity criterion common to all personality pathology (i.e., level of personality functioning as described in criterion A of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders). Next, the significance of Kernberg's theory to recent nosological advances is discussed

The literature contains numerous surveys about assessment training at the level of both doctoral programs and internships. There is minimal information about how such training is assessed by state and provincial regulatory bodies. In this article, we describe the process used by one state licensing board to assess a licensure candidate's transcript, conduct an oral examination, and potentially recommend remediation when the candidate is found to be deficient in specified skills. Our focus in this article is on the application of this evaluation process to personality assessment, although we al

Dimensional literature reinforces the relevance of specific Dependent personality disorder (DPD) traits, as submissiveness, insecurity and avoidance of abandonment. In this paper we measured these traits through the Dimensional Clinical Personality Inventory-2 (IDCP-2). This study aims to verify the capacity of IDCP-2 factors to discriminate and predict DPD related symptoms. From a dataset with 4,503, a total of 305 people was divided in three groups: the community group (n = 200), the non-DPD group (N = 84), and the DPD group (n = 21). We administered six factors from IDCP-2, Insecurity, Aban

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adolescence is increasingly recognized as a valid and clinically meaningful diagnosis, yet it remains frequently underdetected and undertreated. Diagnostic uncertainty often arises from overlap between typical developmental features, such as emotional reactivity, identity exploration, and fluctuating peer relationships, and the pathological instability characteristic of BPD. Stigma and clinician hesitancy to diagnose before age 18 further delay intervention, despite evidence that early identification improves outcomes. Dimensional diagnostic frameworks,

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) introduced the clinician-rated Levels of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) as an indicator of general personality functioning based on four elements: Identity, Self-Direction, Empathy, and Intimacy. Construct validation strategies were employed to select and evaluate items from the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 2007) to measure the four elements of the LPFS. In Study 1, conceptual ratings of PAI items produced lists of candidate items for the four e

The aims of this study were to evaluate the utility of therapeutic assessment (therapeutic assessment) as a brief intervention to target reduction in A1C levels and to assess the levels of personality functioning and broad trait domains described in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in a sample of patients with Type 2 diabetes and their relationship to A1C levels at baseline and follow-up. Participants (n = 99) were recruited from a primary care office and provided feedback on how their personality functioning and pathological personality traits might influence their diabet
