The leader as a retention specialist.

Retention problems will plague us for the near future. Blanchard and Waghorn (1997) believe that everyone wants to be magnificent, and not just ordinary. Unfortunately, often we expect only the ordinary and not the magnificient. People respond to our expectations. We can help staff to achieve magnificence by providing unconditional love and remembering that people are magnificent. Sometimes their behavior is a problem and certain things block the expression of their greatness, but all people are magnificent. If we create "sanctuaries of caring" where nurses and others are given the opportunity

Explain how and why strategies work, for whom, the conditions needed and the costs involved. DESIGN AND METHODS: A realist synthesis approach was used. In step 1, strategies were identified and init

Changes in turnover and vacancy rates of care workers in England from 2008 to 2010: panel analysis of national workforce data.

The combination of growing demand for long-term care and higher expectations of care staff needs to be set in the context of long-standing concerns about the sustainability of recruitment and retention of front-line staff in the United Kingdom. Organisational and work environment factors are associated with vacancy levels and turnover rates. The aim of the current analysis was to investigate changes in turnover and vacancy rates over time experienced by a sample of social care employers in England. Taking a follow-up approach offers potentially more accurate estimates of changes in turnover an

Attrition in surgery: A scoping review of contributing factors and demographic disparities.

INTRODUCTION: Attrition threatens the sustainability of the surgical workforce, with limited data existing regarding practicing surgeons. This scoping review aims to map the existing literature on attrition in this cohort and identify associated factors to inform retention efforts. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Review (PRIMSA-ScR) guidelines. PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central, and Web of Science were searched for English-language studies since 2000 examining attrition among practicing surgeons

Applying the Worker Well-Being Framework to Identify Factors that Impact Turnover Among Long-Haul Truck Drivers.

BACKGROUND: Drivers in the long-haul trucking industry have chronic health conditions, engage in unhealthy behaviors, and leave the industry at high rates. Previous work has not considered the health and safety outcomes resulting from the conditions of work in the trucking industry and their role in turnover. The goal of this study was to understand the expectations of an incoming workforce, explore how work conditions impact their well-being, and identify strategies for retention. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted among current long-haul drivers and supervisors at trucking c

Using acceptance and commitment therapy in everyday conversations to support staff well-being.

Healthcare organisations implement a range of staff well-being initiatives and increasingly focus on compassionate leadership. While formal interventions aimed at maintaining and enhancing staff well-being can be beneficial, they have practical limitations, such as staff turnover and challenges in meeting demand. Therefore, everyday conversations between nurses in leadership positions and their team members also have an important role in supporting staff well-being. One psychological model that nurse leaders may wish to use is acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which involves techniques

Identifying Risk and Protective Factors for Attrition Among Recently Enlisted Navy Personnel Using Variable Importance Measures.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 1 in 4 Navy recruits will not complete their obligated service. Identifying factors associated with Navy attrition is essential to retaining a skilled and motivated fighting force. This study utilized machine learning and variable importance measures (VIM) extracted from random forest (RF) and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) decision trees to identify factors that contribute to Navy attrition. These methods are more robust and sensitive when assessing hundreds of predictor variables, offering superior performance relative to regression analyses. Leveraging advan

Quantifying Staff Preferences for Workforce Retention Strategies in Remote Australian Primary Health Care Services.

AIM: To outline key criteria when choosing how to measure remote area primary health care workers' retention preferences and compare six different methodological approaches against these criteria. CONTEXT: Australians living in remote communities experience poorer health outcomes. Many health services serving remote populations have persistent workforce shortages, high staff turnover and short retention which adversely affect access to timely, appropriate health care, care continuity and cultural appropriateness of care. Improved understanding of staff preferences for different retention init

Big five model personality traits and job burnout: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: Job burnout negatively contributes to individual well-being, enhancing public health costs due to turnover, absenteeism, and reduced job performance. Personality traits mainly explain why workers differ in experiencing burnout under the same stressful work conditions. The current systematic review was conducted with the PRISMA method and focused on the five-factor model to explain workers' burnout risk. METHODS: The databases used were Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and PsycINFO. Keywords used were: "Burnout," "Job burnout," "Work burnout," "Personality," and "Personality traits".

The bending point: How the physical toll of bedside care is pushing nursing staff out the door.

BACKGROUND: Nursing staff face relentless physical demands that may contribute to decisions to leave the bedside. The link between routine physical tasks and staff turnover remains unclear. PURPOSE: This study aimed to quantify the physical demands of bedside care and explore how these demands relate to pain and turnover intentions within surgical units. METHODS: Staff completed a survey measuring pain severity, location, and career impact. An ergonomist conducted passive observations using a tool created to identify the frequency of risky bends. The data collected identified correlations be

Effect of Staffing and Wages on Turnover of Nonclinical Support Staff in Nursing Homes.

OBJECTIVES: Housekeeping, dietary, laundry, and maintenance workers play a critical role in nursing home quality and safety. High turnover among these workers disrupts care, increases costs, and undermines facility stability. However, little is known about the role of staffing and wages on turnover for these roles. The objective of this study is to estimate the effect of staffing and wages on the turnover of housekeeping, dietary, laundry, and maintenance workers. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A total of 418 unique nursing homes with 4428 observations in Iowa from 20
