Depression in persons with disabilities: a scoping review.

Individuals with disabilities are more vulnerable to depression development than the general population. This study sought to map the evidence on current knowledge of depression, intervention strategies, and assessment tools among people with disabilities. This review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review methodology framework. An electronic search was performed on four English databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, and Web of Science. The original search returned 1802 results, with 1,116 from Web of Science, 626 from PubMed, 25 from Cochrane, and 35 from PsycINF

The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 expands employment opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities.

The primary purpose of the ADA is the full inclusion of persons with disabilities within their communities. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the areas of employment, transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, and state and local government agencies. The person described in this report encountered some of this discrimination. He successfully obtained paid community-integrated employment only after overcoming major obstacles and barriers, the greatest being transportation. In our highly mobile society, reliable transportation is essential for the acq

Perceived discomfort associated with working with persons with varying disabilities.

Perceptions of discomfort by nondisabled coworkers are a major barrier to the acceptance of disabled persons into work groups. This research examined whether reported discomfort varied by the type or nature of the disability. 151 subjects rated 20 types of disabilities in terms of how uncomfortable or comfortable they would be working closely at a nonspecified task with a person with the particular disability. A stable hierarchy of the 20 disabilities was found. Patterns and implications are discussed. Gender of the rater influenced the ratings, specifically females exhibited less discomfort w

Pregnancy and Early Parenting Experiences of Persons With Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Persons with disabilities (PWD) are as likely as their nondisabled peers to become pregnant, yet their experiences of pregnancy and early parenthood remain poorly understood. We aimed to explore the experiences of PWD during pregnancy and the postpartum period, with particular attention to managing their health and their children's health, and to parenting with a disability. METHODS: This qualitative descriptive study was part of a mixed-methods study focused on psychosocial risks and maternal-infant outcomes among PWD. We completed semi-structured interviews with 45 PWD who were

Treatment of sexual offenses by persons with developmental disabilities.

Sexual offenses, particularly paraphilias, although infrequent, are committed by people with mental retardation. Their management poses clinical and ethical dilemmas. Available treatments were reviewed, especially the literature on the most effective agent, medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA). A case history was presented of a young man with mild mental retardation who was successfully treated with MPA. The role of antiandrogen treatments of paraphilias among the mentally retarded population includes a consideration of informed consent and ethical aspects of treatment.

A homogeneous group of persons with learning disabilities: adults with severe learning disabilities in vocational rehabilitation.

The results of a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment of adults having learning disabilities (LD) and participating in vocational rehabilitation are presented. The subjects were found to have low-average general intelligence; lower verbal than performance IQs; attention, reasoning, and auditory memory deficits; academic achievement at the fourth-/fifth-grade level; language problems; and low self-esteem. These results were contrasted with other studies of adults with LD in vocational rehabilitation, and all studies on this population reported similar findings. A comparison of studies of

VR Disability Simulation Reduces Implicit Bias Towards Persons With Disabilities.

This article investigates how experiencing Virtual Reality (VR) Disability Simulation (DS) affects information recall and participants' implicit association towards people with disabilities (PwD). Implicit attitudes are our actions or judgments towards various concepts or stereotypes (e.g., race) which we may or may not be aware of. Previous research has shown that experiencing ownership over a dark-skinned body reduces implicit racial bias. We hypothesized that a DS with a tracked Head Mounted Display (HMD) and a wheelchair interface would have a significantly larger effect on participants' i

Pharmacist interventions for persons with intellectual disabilities: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) often have complex health needs due to the development of multiple comorbidities. Given the higher associated use of problematic medications, such as antipsychotics, and polypharmacy, persons with ID may be particularly vulnerable to adverse side effects. With their medication expertise, pharmacists have the potential to address medication related challenges experienced by this population. OBJECTIVE: Explore what is known about the care pharmacists provide to persons with ID. DESIGN: Following Arksey and O'Malley's 5-stage framework f

Religion, culture, and discrimination against persons with disabilities in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: There is not a lot in the literature on disability in Nigeria concerning the role that religion, culture and beliefs play in sustaining discriminatory practices against persons with disabilities. OBJECTIVES: Many of these practices are exclusionary in nature and unfair. They are either embedded in or sustained by religion, culture and beliefs about disability and persons with disabilities. METHODS: Drawing on various resources and research on disability, this paper looks at these practices in respect of these sustaining factors. Some of the discriminatory practices that constitut

Psychiatric aspects of sexual abuse involving persons with developmental disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: To consider psychiatric issues that relate to the prevention and management of sexual abuse involving persons with developmental disabilities as either abusers or victims. METHOD: Seven case descriptions illustrate the clinical challenges raised by allegations of sexual abuse. RESULTS: Mental disorders and communication problems often coexist with the cognitive impairment that is primary in developmental disabilities. Pedophilic behaviour prompts allegations of abuse, and posttraumatic stress disorder often follows abuse. Difficulties communicating with others may preclude the det

Learning based PTSD symptoms in persons with specific learning disabilities.

Specific learning disorders (SLD) persist into adulthood. Persons with SLD frequently experience emotional and social difficulties. Following qualitative descriptions of individuals with SLD who experienced learning, as traumatic, we hypothesized that individuals reporting SLD would report higher levels of learning-based post-traumatic-stress-disorder (PTSD) symptoms. In Study 1 (N = 216), participants responded to questionnaires concerning SLD and learning-based PTSD. A separate sample (N = 43) was queried about adjustment disorder symptoms. Study 2 (N = 176) examined if current psychological

Position paper on PRM and persons with long term disabilities.

In the current population we observe a rise of chronic health problems often with multiple characteristics. This results in a growing number of people who are experiencing long-term disabilities or difficulties in functioning because of disability. These conditions require a complex response over an extended period of time, that involves coordinated inputs from a wide range of health professionals. This paper argues the central role and benefit of rehabilitation and describes the rehabilitation as an integral component in the management of people with chronic disabilities. It also presents the
