Use of assistive devices to address hearing impairment by older persons with disabilities.

Hearing impairment impacts on the lives of almost half of people over the age of 65. For many people, a hearing aid or other assistive device can enhance communication. However, there is a high rate of dissatisfaction with hearing aids among those who currently use, or have used them in the past. This study of 227 elders with hearing impairment sought to gain a description of their multiple needs relative to demographics, health status physical status, and psychosocial status. Furthermore, we compared along the same dimensions the 227 elders with hearing impairment with 495 frail elders who re

Concept of the notional person in the assessment of hearing disability.

Medicolegal assessment in relation to a claim for hearing damage requires an equitable baseline against which to compare the state of hearing of the claimant. This baseline, or 'notional person', should match the claimant in every respect save for the cause of the hearing loss. The amount of compensation is determined from the difference between the percentage disability of the claimant and that of the 'notional person'. These percentages are, in turn, calculated from the respective hearing threshold levels. In the particular case of occupational noise-induced hearing loss there are, in princi

Atom Search Optimization with Deep Learning Enabled Arabic Sign Language Recognition for Speaking and Hearing Disability Persons.

Sign language has played a crucial role in the lives of impaired people having hearing and speaking disabilities. They can send messages via hand gesture movement. Arabic Sign Language (ASL) recognition is a very difficult task because of its high complexity and the increasing intraclass similarity. Sign language may be utilized for the communication of sentences, letters, or words using diverse signs of the hands. Such communication helps to bridge the communication gap between people with hearing impairment and other people and also makes it easy for people with hearing impairment to express

Assistance Dogs for Persons with Hearing Impairment: A Review.

The use of dogs to help people with disabilities has been known for a long time. Assistance dogs carry out a variety of practical tasks for disabled people with appropriate and targeted training, including assisting deaf persons or people with profound hearing loss. The benefits of assistance dogs for persons with hearing impairment (hearing dogs) include a) improved ability to carry out daily tasks through the codified reporting of sounds proper of everyday life and/or of dangerous situations and b) psychosocial aspects such as companionship and sense of protection. The benefits derived from

CDC grand rounds: public health practices to include persons with disabilities.

"Persons with disabilities" is a vague designation that might not always be understood. Persons with disabilities are persons with limitations in hearing, vision, mobility, or cognition, or with emotional or behavioral disorders. What they have in common is that they all experience a significant limitation in function that can make it harder to engage in some activity of daily living without accommodations or supports.

Skin cancer diagnosis over the lifetime in persons with different disabilities.

Persons with disabilities globally experience barriers to medical care, preventative screening, and experience disparate health outcomes compared to those without disabilities. The prevalence of skin cancer in persons with different disabilities is not known. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2017 to 2021 was analyzed to study skin cancer across the lifetime in patients with disabilities related to hearing, vision, ambulation, cognition, independent living, and self-care. Of the 10% of BRFSS respondents with a history of skin cancer, the unadjusted prevalence in

[Survey of Pharmacists' Knowledge, Actions and Confidence in Medication Education to Patients with Hearing Disabilities].

Health professionals should adopt best practices that are cognizant of the communication skills of their patients. Pharmacists should be knowledgeable about hearing disabilities to effectively provide medication education to deaf and hard-of-hearing (HH) patients. The Act for Eliminating Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities requires pharmacists to take the appropriate actions to their patients. However, awareness about the appropriate actions for eliminate discrimination has not increased among medical professionals. This survey examined the knowledge about hearing disabilities, pr

Single and Dual Sensory Loss and Cardiovascular Disease in US adults: Findings from the 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.

Prior work has shown that persons with disabilities have higher rates of poor cardiovascular outcomes than persons without disabilities. Little research has evaluated this relationship in persons with single and dual sensory loss. This study aimed to examine the association between single and dual sensory loss and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Data were obtained from 2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a representative household survey of 234,394 noninstitutionalized civilian adults. The independent variable was sensory loss (neither, vision loss only, hearing loss only, both visi

Understanding participation of persons with disabilities in clinical trial research in India-a retrospective analysis of inclusive language of protocols.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The under-representation of vulnerable groups in clinical trials, including persons with disabilities, could affect the applicability of trial findings to real-world public health interventions. We undertook this study to assess the extent to which persons with disabilities are excluded due to non-inclusionary language use in protocols from clinical trial research in India. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective mixed-methods analysis of fully published clinical trial protocols relevant to India (January 2017 to December 2024), sourced from national and international

The quality of teaching behaviors in learning environments of DHH students.

Classrooms are complex learning environments, with instruction, climate, and teacher-student interactions playing important roles in students' academic progress. To investigate the learning environments of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students, we developed a new observational tool called the Quality of the Learning Environment-DHH rating scale (QLE-DHH) and rated 98 teachers of DHH students being educated in a range of classroom environments. The present study sought to (1) determine if the items on the QLE-DHH are good indicators of theoretically meaningful dimensions of classroom quality;

From Vicious Circles to Virtuous Cycles: Vygotskian-Inspired Conclusions for Biomedicine and Deaf Education.

In this concluding article of an American Annals of the Deaf Special Issue, we draw on Vygotsky's Fundamentals of Defectology to argue that the essence of deaf pedagogy is not centered on constructing deaf students' hearing abilities but on a biosocial orientation that considers the whole multimodal child with unfettered access to natural signed languages. In alignment with this biosocial view, we recognize and resist the overarching influence of biomedical professionals and systems on deaf education. Such biomedical influence comes with convenient detachment from accountability in education s

Engagement of Children who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Attending Mainstream Schools.

This study compared the observed and the self-reported engagement of 16 students who are Deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) attending mainstream schools to that of matched controls with typical hearing. Observed engagement was measured through observations in the classroom setting using the Mainstream Version of the Code for Instructional Structure and Student Academic Reponses. Self-reported engagement was measured using the Classroom Participation Questionnaire. The results revealed no significant differences for either observed or self-reported engagement between the DHH and the control groups;
