Visual disability leads to functional impairment and limits an individual's activities of daily living, causing emotional, social, and economic hardship. The visual disability certificate issued by the Government of India is an important document through which social security services for persons with disability (PwDs) can be provided seamlessly. It ensures equal opportunities for PwDs and their full participation in nation building. New guidelines were formulated via "The Gazette of India," dated January 4, 2018 for disability certification. The purpose of the current review is to highlight t

The present study investigates the performance of persons with reading disabilities (PRD) on a variety of sequential visual-comparison tasks that have different working-memory requirements. In addition, mediating relationships between the sequential comparison process and attention and memory skills were looked for. Our findings suggest that PRD perform worse than normally achieving readers (NAR) when the task requires more than a minimal amount of working memory, unrelated to presentation rate. We also demonstrate high correlations between performance on the task with the most working-memory

Classic theories emphasize the primacy of first-person sensory experience for learning meanings of words: to know what "see" means, one must be able to use the eyes to perceive. Contrary to this idea, blind adults and children acquire normative meanings of "visual" verbs, e.g., interpreting "see" and "look" to mean with the eyes for sighted agents. Here we ask the flip side of this question: how easily do sighted children acquire the meanings of "visual" verbs as they apply to blind agents? We asked sighted 4-, 6- and 9-year-olds to tell us what part of the body a blind or a sighted agent woul

BACKGROUND: The ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL) as a component of participation is one of the factors that contribute to quality of life. The ability to perform ADL for persons experiencing severe/profound intellectual disability (ID) may be reduced due to their cognitive and physical capacities. However, until recently, the impact of the significantly prevalent visual impairments on the performance of activities of daily living has not yet been revealed within this group.
AIM: The purpose of this prospective cross-sectional study was to investigate the impact of visual im

BACKGROUND: Despite Uganda's progress in promoting affirmative action for persons with disabilities and its strategy of using microfinance to fight poverty, access to microfinance services by persons with disabilities is still problematic due to barriers, characterised by discrepancies between policies and practices. Regarding education, the affirmative action in favour of learners with disabilities has not translated into actual learning opportunities due to personal and environmental barriers.

The aim of this work was to report for the first time the prevalence of HIV infection among people with disabilities (PWDs) in Niger. The Washington Group Short questionnaire was used to identify people with disabilities during a household survey. Blood samples for HIV testing were collected using the Dried Blood Sampling (DBS) method. HIV testing was performed according to the Niger national HIV testing guideline. A total of 21,979 persons aged 15-69 years were screened, of them 2237 (10.17%) had disabilities and 949 participants (4.32%) had severe disabilities (level 3 or 4). Finally, 821 pa

Visually impaired schoolchildren require classrooms tailored to their visual abilities and needs, as outlined in existing literature detailing optimal modifications, recommendations, and guidelines. The study aims to review existing literature on classroom modifications for visually impaired schoolchildren, outlining recommendations for creating ideal classrooms within mainstream physical settings. After initial screening, 712 publications (698 from databases and registers, and 14 from other methods) were identified for detailed review, of which 17 were ultimately eligible for inclusion. Throu

Persons with disabilities globally experience barriers to medical care, preventative screening, and experience disparate health outcomes compared to those without disabilities. The prevalence of skin cancer in persons with different disabilities is not known. The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2017 to 2021 was analyzed to study skin cancer across the lifetime in patients with disabilities related to hearing, vision, ambulation, cognition, independent living, and self-care. Of the 10% of BRFSS respondents with a history of skin cancer, the unadjusted prevalence in

Students with a visual impairment and a concurring hearing impairment are considered deafblind under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 2004. Deafblindness is not limited to students who are totally blind and profoundly deaf; rather, it ensures that when students have a visual impairment as well as a hearing impairment that impacts their learning, appropriate services are in place for them to receive an appropriate education in the school setting. In the United States, the deafblind intervener model has been implemented in some states, whereby the intervener acts as a co

To measure the ocular fixation and sequential scanning dysfunction assumed responsible for the visual reading symptoms which characterize dyslexia or learning disabilities, an optokinetically based tracking method was devised. This method quantitatively demonstrated significantly reduced fixation, tracking, and perceptual or visual-span scores as well as "movement illusions" for 70 cerebellar-vestibular dysfunctioning persons with learning disabilities vs 70 controls. Such data tended to validate the hypothesis that cerebellar-vestibular-determined fixation and tracking mechanisms predispose d

To provide meaningful competition that is equitable for Paralympic athletes, classification systems are vital to determine which athletes are eligible to compete in adapted forms of sports and to group athletes for competition. Our discussion has important implications to inform how we should approach visual function assessment in sports performance. Sport participation positively benefits individuals with low vision. In particular, adapted sports exist to provide people with visual disabilities an avenue for participating in recreational activity. High-performance low-vision athletes can part

Waste separation is a critical strategy to address the intensifying global waste crisis. However, inclusive teaching strategies for visually impaired students remain limited. This study addresses this pressing gap by implementing an innovative intervention rooted in experiential learning principles. This approach integrates sound-equipped bins and waste sorting activity guides tailored to empower visually impaired students to independently and effectively separate waste. The research study employed a mixed-methods design encompassing three key phases: (1) training teachers to proficiently use

BACKGROUND: Disability in India is associated with increasing non-communicable diseases, rising longevity, and increasing accidents and injuries. Though studies have examined prevalence, patterns, and socioeconomic correlates of disability, no attempt has been made in estimating age of onset of disability in India.
OBJECTIVE: This paper investigates the economic gradient of age of onset of locomotor, visual, hearing, speech, mental retardation, mental illness, and other disabilities in India.
METHOD: We use nationally representative data of 106,894 disabled individuals from the 76th round of
