Crucial for mRNA-based vaccines are the composition, structure, and properties of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) as their delivery vehicle. Using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations as a computational microscope, we provide an atomistic view of the structure of the Comirnaty vaccine LNP, its molecular organization, physicochemical properties, and insight in its pH-driven phase transition enabling mRNA release at atomistic resolution. At physiological pH, our simulations suggest an oil-like LNP core that is composed of the aminolipid ALC-0315 and cholesterol (ratio 72:28). It is surrounded by a

Viruses have established relationships with almost every other living organism on Earth and at all levels of biological organization: from other viruses up to entire ecosystems. In most cases, they peacefully coexist with their hosts, but in most relevant cases, they parasitize them and induce diseases and pandemics, such as the AIDS and the most recent avian influenza and COVID-19 pandemic events, causing a huge impact on health, society, and economy. Viruses play an essential role in shaping the eco-evolutionary dynamics of their hosts, and have been also involved in some of the major evolut

Electrical signaling in biological systems is generally understood through the lens of single-channel biophysics, yet whether ensembles of ion channels can undergo cooperative opening and closing remains unclear. Here, we show that ensembles of voltage-gated ion channels can undergo bioelectrical order-disorder phase transitions driven by feedback between channel currents and local membrane voltage. When channels open, they carry ion-selective current that redistributes ions near the membrane and perturbs the transmembrane potential, thereby biasing the gating of nearby channels. This emergent

Phase transitions are traditionally understood within two seemingly incompatible theoretical paradigms. Landau-Ginzburg phase transitions1,2 are continuous, occurring at critical points where microscopic details become irrelevant and universal behaviour emerges, driven by gapless fluctuations with scale-invariant correlations3. By contrast, topological phase transitions connect gapped phases characterized by quantized topological invariants4,5 and, in doing so, necessarily pass through gapless phase boundaries where such invariants become ill-defined6-9. Here using an acoustic metamaterial pla

Because of their weak intermolecular forces and flexible molecular geometry, molecular crystals are renowned for their structural versatility (polymorphism) and the great difficulty in controlling the crystal form during synthesis. Despite its great importance in determining the final solid form (e.g. single crystal, polycrystal or amorphous), the kinetics of the crystal-to-crystal transformation between structures with different molecular packing has long been a fundamental challenge in both measurement and simulation. Here we report the first global potential energy surface (PES) for urea cr

Silicene is a two-dimensional silicon monolayer with a band gap caused by relatively strong spin-orbit coupling. This band gap can be steered using a vertical electric field. In turn, the change in this electric field value leads to a transition from a topological insulator to a bulk insulator regime. This study aims to develop a phase-space approach to detecting the topological phase transitions in silicene induced by the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields with the aid of the concept of topological quantum number based on the Wigner-Rényi entropy. A reinterpreted definition of

Adhesive hydrogels are crucial for interfacing wearable electronics with substrates, yet the inherent trade-off between interfacial adhesion and cohesive strength always limits their application performance. Here, we present an adhesive hydrogel based on lignin-mediated catechol chemistry and salt hydrate phase-transition, which achieves synergistic enhancement of interfacial adhesion and cohesive strength upon 1 V electrostimulated crystallization. The hydrogel is soft and exhibits mild adhesion to various substrates in amorphous state. Electrostimulus-induced phase-transition realizes a sign

The classical theory of solids, based on the quantum mechanics of single electrons moving in periodic potentials, provides an excellent description of substances ranging from semiconducting silicon to superconducting aluminium. Over the last fifteen years, it has become increasingly clear that there are substances for which the conventional approach fails. Among these are certain rare earth compounds and transition metal oxides, including high-temperature superconductors. A common feature of these materials is complexity, in the sense that they have relatively large unit cells containing heter

While nonreciprocal couplings are ubiquitous in classical systems, their impact on quantum many-body criticality and entanglement remains largely unexplored. Using exact numerical simulations, we study an interacting fermionic chain subject to nonreciprocal gain and loss. We show that the interplay between dissipation and interactions drives a dissipative phase transition, marked by the opening of a many-body gap and a crossover from power law to exponential relaxation. The weakly interacting regime displays nonreciprocal signatures, including nonzero currents and directional charge accumulati

This discussion explores the complex aspects of managing nutrition for preterm infants during the critical transition from exclusive parenteral nutrition (PN) to full enteral feeding (EN). The primary objectives of nutritional care in this very low birth weight infants (VLBW) population are to promote growth rates comparable to those in utero and enhance key neurodevelopmental milestones. The transition phase is characterized by the gradual increase of enteral feeds concurrently with the reduction and eventual cessation of parenteral nutrition. This period presents several key challenges in cl

In two-dimensional magnets, the ultrafast photoexcited method represents a low-power and high-speed method of switching magnetic states. Bilayer CrI3 (BLC) is an ideal platform for studying ultrafast photoinduced magnetic phase transitions due to its stacking-dependent magnetic properties. Here, by using time-dependent density functional theory, we explore the photoexcitation phase transition in BLC from the R- to M-stacked phase. This process is found to be induced by electron-phonon interactions. The activated Ag and Bg phonon modes in the xy direction drive the horizontal relative displacem

Neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, are becoming increasingly prevalent in super-ageing societies. However, the molecular mechanisms by which prion-like proteins undergo aberrant phase transition, aggregation and propagation during neurodegeneration remain incompletely understood. Although these proteins are capable of undergoing liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), followed by a sol-gel transition in vitro, the factors that govern their pathological phase transition in vivo remain largely elusive. Notably, many prion-like proteins also possess

Environmental factors such as temperature and ion concentration can induce the phase transition from the liquid-crystalline to gel phase. In our work, we investigate the effect of temperatures and NaCl concentrations on phase transitions for two model lipids, i.e., an ether linked lipid with methyl branches (phosphatidyl glycerophosphate methyl ester, PGP-Me) and a more common ester phospholipid (dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine, DMPC). At 5.0 M NaCl 30 °C, the temperature closest to DMPC's phase transition temperature (Tm) in pure water, DMPC experiences a phase transition, but PGP-Me does not.

Insects are one of the most successful classes on Earth, reflected in an enormous species richness and diversity. Arguably, this success is partly due to the high degree to which polyphenism, where one genotype gives rise to more than one phenotype, is exploited by many of its species. In social insects, for instance, larval diet influences the development into distinct castes; and locust polyphenism has tricked researchers for years into believing that the drastically different solitarious and gregarious phases might be different species. Solitarious locusts behave much as common grasshoppers

Solid-like protein deposits found in aged and diseased human brains have revealed a relationship between insoluble protein accumulations and the resulting deficits in neurologic function. Clinically diverse neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, exhibit unique and disease-specific biochemical protein signatures and abnormal protein depositions that often correlate with disease pathogenesis. Recent evidence indicates that many pathologic proteins assemble into liquid-like protein phase

The study of phase transitions using data-driven approaches is challenging, especially when little prior knowledge of the system is available. Topological data analysis is an emerging framework for characterizing the shape of data and has recently achieved success in detecting structural transitions in material science, such as the glass-liquid transition. However, data obtained from physical states may not have explicit shapes as structural materials. We thus propose a general framework, termed "topological persistence machine," to construct the shape of data from correlations in states, so t

The a(0) x b(0) x 2c(0) twofold superstructure of dicaesium mercury tetrachloride, Cs(2)HgCl(4), at T = 120 K has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation. Lattice parameters were found as a = 9.7105 (2), b = 7.4691 (1), c = 26.8992 (4) A, and beta = 90.368 (1) degrees with the supercell space group P2(1)/c. Refinements on 1828 observed unique reflections converged to R = 0.053 (wR = 0.057) using anisotropic temperature factors for all atoms. This phase is the stable phase of Cs(2)HgCl(4) below 163 K. A quantitative comparison is made of the distortions o

Designing materials with tailor-made thermal properties is an important challenge in current condensed matter and nanoscience, particularly for the implications on efficient thermal management in electronics and for applications related to energy harvesting such as thermoelectricity. Even more interesting is the possibility to dynamically access different heat conduction states, as it potentially leads to the real-time control of heat flow. Here, we leverage phase-engineering in MoTe2, a 2D van der Waals transition metal dichalcogenide, showing that the thermal conductivity undergoes a giant i
