Aluminium-phosphate interactions in the rhizosphere of two bean species: Phaseolus lunatus L. and Phaseolus vulgaris L.

BACKGROUND: Plants differ in their response to high aluminium (Al) concentrations, which typically cause toxicity in plants grown on acidic soils. The response depends on plant species and environmental conditions such as substrate and cultivation system. The present study aimed to assess Al-phosphate (P) dynamics in the rhizosphere of two bean species, Phaseolus vulgaris L. var. Red Kidney and Phaseolus lunatus L., in rhizobox experiments. RESULTS: Root activity of the bean species induced up to a sevenfold increase in exchangeable Al and up to a 30-fold decrease in extractable P. High solub

Lipid peroxidation in cadmium-treated Phaseolus coccineus plants.

Lipid peroxidation was examined in Phaseolus coccineus plants treated with 25 microM Cadmium (Cd) for 12 days at two different growth stages of the primary leaves. In the leaves of Cd-treated young plants, the content of free fatty acids was higher only after 8 days of plant exposure to the metal, lipoxygenase activity at pH 7.0 was enhanced after 6 and 8 days of Cd action, but at pH 8.0 it was higher than control, especially after 8 days. Non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation was higher after 6 days of young plant exposure to the metal, but after 8 days it slightly decreased. Glutathione-S-transfe

Purification and Characterization of Asparaginase from Phaseolus vulgaris Seeds.

L-asparaginase from bacteria has been used in treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The aim of this study was to purify and characterize L-asparaginase from Phaseolus vulgaris seeds instead of microbial sources. L-asparaginase was purified to apparent homogeneity. The enzyme has molecular mass of 79 kDa. The purified asparaginase had very low activity toward a number of asparagine and glutamine analogues. L-asparaginase was free from glutaminase activity. Kinetic parameters, Km and Vmax of purified enzyme, were found to be 6.72 mM and 0.16 μM, respectively. The enzyme had optimum pH at 8.

Anaphylaxis due to green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris): a new phenotype?

BACKGROUND: Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction with increasing incidence in Europe. It is often caused by food, insect venom, and drugs. White, red, and green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) are legumes of the Fabaceae family consumed worldwide. In Spain, beans are the third most consumed legume species after chickpeas and lentils. Allergy to different legumes is very frequent in children and represents the fifth cause of food allergy. OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate a new phenotype in patients with green bean anaphylaxis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report a 20-year-old woman who experienced anaphyla

Calcium Deficiency of Dark-grown Seedlings of Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Hypocotyl collapse in dark-grown seedlings of Phaseolus vulgaris cv. Pinto was due to calcium deficiency. There was no evidence of an associated pathogen. The number of seedlings with hypocotyl collapse decreased and the mean hypocotyl length increased when increasing levels of calcium (0-100 micrograms per gram) were supplied in an external nutrient solution to seedlings grown under sterile conditions. When seedlings were supplied with a complete nutrient solution, containing calcium at 100 micrograms per gram, but minus potassium, magnesium, sulfur, nitrogen, or phosphorus, occasional plants

Improving salt tolerance of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with hydrogen sulfide.

The current study examined the H2S applications on growth, biochemical and physiological parameters of bean seedlings under saline conditions. The findings of the study indicated that salt stress decreased plant growth and development, photosynthetic activity, and mineral and hormone content [excluding abscisic acid (ABA)] in bean seedlings. Plant and root fresh mass and dry mass with H2S applications increased as compared to the control treatment at the same salinity level. Both salinity and H2S treatments significantly affected the net assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration r

Intestinal microbial flora after feeding phytohemagglutinin lectins (Phaseolus vulgaris) to rats.

Incorporation of purified phytohemagglutinin (PHA) lectins derived from red kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in the diet of weanling rats will cause growth failure, malabsorption of nutrients, and bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. These effects are not caused by feeding a similar quantity of PHA to germfree rats. To define the morphological and bacterial changes on the mucosal surfaces of the jejunum, ileum, and cecum in greater detail, we pair fed two groups of weanling rats isocaloric, isonitrogenous diets with or without 0.5% PHA protein. On the jejunal surfaces of control rats,

The organization of the crossed geniculogeniculate pathway of the rat: a Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin study.

The intergeniculate leaflet of the thalamus is known to give rise to neuronal projections to the suprachiasmatic nuclei and the rostral part of the pineal gland. Via these projections the intergeniculate leaflet is considered to play a role in regulation of circadian rhythms. Iontophoretic injections of the anterograde tracer Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin were placed in various subnuclei of the lateral geniculate nucleus in order to study the topographical organization of the crossed geniculogeniculate pathway in the rat. Injections involving neurons in the intergeniculate leaflet or the

[Effect of various solvents on the extraction of protein fractions of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris)].

A study was carried out to determine the effect of different solvents on the extraction of protein fractions in beans. Black bean protein was extracted with the following solvents: distilled water, 0.01 M sodium hydroxide, 0.05 M sodium chloride, and 70% ethanol. By using each solvent under different conditions, it was possible to establish the optimum ones for the best extraction and fractionation of proteins from leguminous seeds. These conditions were the following: one hour agitation at room temperature, three successive extractions with the same solvent, and a ratio of solid to solvent of

Enhanced Antiplatelet Activity of Nitrated Fatty Acid Extracts from Phaseolus vulgaris L.

Dietary bioactive compounds are increasingly explored as complementary cardioprotective strategies, and the nitration of unsaturated fatty acids has emerged as a process capable of enhancing antiplatelet properties. This study investigated whether Phaseolus vulgaris L. extracts can generate nitrated fatty acids under gastric-like conditions and evaluated their effects on human platelet function. Bean extracts and major fatty acids were nitrated in vitro and tested using washed platelets to assess cytotoxicity, TRAP-6 and collagen-induced aggregation, activation markers (P-selectin, CD63), and

Thesis Abstract Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines: chemical composition and protein digestibility.

The bean represents the main source of proteins for the low income populations, although the digestibility of those proteins is relatively low. Consequently, the programs of plant genetic breeding have been working on the search for new lines with higher protein levels. Thus, with the purpose of supplying information to the researchers, in this study, 21 bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) lines were analyzed for the centesimal and mineral composition, protein digestibility, phenolic compounds, and trypsin inhibitor. The entirely randomized experimental design was used with 21 treatments (lines) and

Immunocytochemical localization of ingested kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lectins in rat gut.

The binding of ingested kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) lectins to the luminal surface of the rat gut was investigated by an indirect immunofluorescence method in which the primary antiserum was monospecific for kidney bean globulin lectins. The major lectin-positive sites were found to be the non-crypt regions of villi in the proximal region of the small intestine; exactly the same regions displayed extensive disruption of microvilli. Lectins were not localized in the brush border regions of ileal villi and no microvillus abnormalities were detected in this region of the gut. The luminal sur

Review: The potential of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) as a vehicle for iron biofortification.

Common beans are a staple food and the major source of iron for populations in Eastern Africa and Latin America. Bean iron concentration is high and can be further increased by biofortification. A major constraint to bean iron biofortification is low iron absorption, attributed to inhibitory compounds such as phytic acid (PA) and polyphenol(s) (PP). We have evaluated the usefulness of the common bean as a vehicle for iron biofortification. High iron concentrations and wide genetic variability have enabled plant breeders to develop high iron bean varieties (up to 10 mg/100 g). PA concentrations

Effect of on-field inoculation of Phaseolus vulgaris with rhizobia on soil bacterial communities.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of inoculation of Phaseolus vulgaris with two indigenous rhizobia strains on plant growth promotion, nitrogen turnover processes, richness and structure of the Rhizobiaceae and total bacterial communities in the bulk soil. Both strains used induced a significant increase in nodulation and grain yield. Analysis of bulk soil fertility showed positive, negative and strain-dependent effects of inoculation on nitrate, phosphorus and ammonium, respectively. Terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism profiling demonstrated that inoculation signifi

Effects of halone 1301 on Lepidium sativum, Petunia hybrida and Phaseolus vulgaris.

Halone 1301 belongs to a group of widely used fire repellants. Although banned in several countries, the production has still not been discontinued, and thus hazards due to use or spill can be expected. The study reports on effects of the halone 1301 on three plant species frequently used for bioindication studies: Lepidium sativum (mouse-ear cress), Phaseolus vulgaris (bush bean) and Petunia hybrida. Plants were exposed to 1 ppbv of the gas in ambient air under controlled conditions for 18 days (L. sativum), and 45 days (P. vulgaris, P. hybrida), respectively. None of the plants showed visibl

Anti-aflatoxin potential of phenolic compounds from common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are widely consumed legumes in Latin America and Africa, valued for their nutritional compounds and antioxidants. Their high polyphenol content contributes to the antioxidant properties, with bioactive compounds showing antifungal and antimycotoxin effects. Certain polyphenols, accumulated in the grain coat, exhibit antimicrobial activity. Mycotoxins, produced mainly by fungi of the genera Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium, pose health risks. This study explores polyphenols in tepary bean and in different common bean varieties, assessing their effect a

Nitrate regulates rhizobial and mycorrhizal symbiosis in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Nitrogen-limited conditions are considered to be a prerequisite for legume-rhizobial symbiosis, but the effects of nitrate-rich conditions on symbiotic status remain poorly understood. We addressed this issue by examining rhizobial (Rhizobim tropici) and arbusclar mycorrhizal (Glomus intraradices) symbiosis in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Negro Jamapa under nitrate pre-incubation and continuous nitrate conditions. Our results indicate that nitrate pre-incubation, independent of the concentration, did not affect nodule development. However, the continuous supply of nitrate at high concentrations i
