Natural phenanthrenes and their biological activity.

The aim of this review is to survey the various naturally occurring phenanthrene compounds that have been isolated from different plants. Only one review has previously been published on this topic. Gorham (1989) reviewed the structures, biosynthesis, separations and spectroscopy of stilbenes and phenanthrenes. The present study furnishes an overview of the hydroxy or/and methoxy-substituted 9,10-dihydro/phenanthrenes, methylated, prenylated and other monomeric derivatives, dimeric and trimeric phenanthrenes and their biological activities. A fairly large number of phenanthrenes have been repo

Phenanthrenes from Bletilla formosana and their anti-neuroinflammatory activity.

A phytochemical investigation of the rhizomes of Bletilla formosana resulted in the isolation of four new phenanthrene dimers, bletiformosins A-D (1-3 and 6), together with four known analogues. The structures of new compounds were determined by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, including HRESIMS and 1D and 2D NMR data. Compounds 1 and 2 represent the first phenanthrene dimers possessing a 3-3' linkage reported from the genus Bletilla. The axial chirality of phenanthrene dimers 3 and 6 was characterized by chiral HPLC coupled with on-line LC-CD analysis. The isolated compounds were prelimi

Adsorption of phenanthrene on natural snow.

The snowpack is a reservoir for semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and, in particular, for persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which are sequestered in winter and released to the atmosphere or hydrosphere in the spring. Modeling these processes usually assumes that SVOCs are incorporated into the snowpack by adsorption to snow surfaces, but this has never been proven because the specific surface area (SSA) of snow has never been measured together with snow composition. Here we expose natural snow to phenanthrene vapors (one of the more volatile POPs) and measure for the first time both t

Photochemical Generation of Allenylidenes from Cyclopropanated Phenanthrenes: An Experimental and Computational Study.

To address the scarcity of generally applicable photochemical routes to allenylidenes in solution, phenanthrene-based sources have been investigated. Specifically, the syntheses of 1-vinylidene-1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthrene, 1-(2-phenylvinylidene)-1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthrene, and 1-(2-methylvinylidene)-1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthrene, photochemical precursors to propadienylidene, 3-phenylpropadienylidene, and 3-methylpropadienylidene have been carried out. Photolysis of these new precursors in olefin traps and benzene afforded the expected cyclopropane ad

Physical state of phenanthrene for utilization by bacteria.

Experiments were done to determine if bacteria able to utilize phenanthrene as a sole source of carbon obtain the hydrocarbon directly from solid phenanthrene particles suspended in the medium or from the phenanthrene dissolved in the medium. Growth experiments were done in gas-tight fermentors completely filled with air-saturated, mineral salts solution with phenanthrene as the substrate. Generation times were determined by rate of oxygen consumption. Generation times were independent of the amount of solid phenanthrene present, and these generation times were the same as the generation time

MALDI-MSI spatial mapping of phenanthrenes in Bletilla striata leaves uncovers BsLAC1 as the first laccase catalysing phenanthrene dimerisation.

Bletilla striata, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, is particularly rich in phenanthrenes and their dimers, which exhibit anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antitumor properties. While phenanthrenes are biosynthesized from bibenzyl precursors through free radical oxidative coupling, and that monomers may further dimerize through radical reactions, the enzymatic basis of the dimerisation remains unexplored. In this study, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) was employed to visualize the distribution of metabolites across four tissues-pseudobu

The Syntheses and Medicinal Attributes of Phenanthrenes as Anticancer Agents: A Quinquennial Update.

Cancer is a silent killer and remains to pose major health problems globally. Amongst the several biological targets, DNA is one of the most striking targets in cancer chemotherapy. Owing to its planar structure, phenanthrene and its derivatives exhibit potential cytotoxicity by intercalating between the DNA base pairs and by inhibiting the enzymes that are involved in the synthesis of DNA. However, due to the off-target effects and resistance, the development of novel chemotherapeutic agents would be meritorious. In this regard, we present a detailed review on the development of phenanthrene-

Sonolytic reactions of phenanthrene in organic extraction solutions.

Ultrasonic extraction is a common method used to extract semi-volatile and nonvolatile organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from solid matrices. However, ultrasonic energy has been suspected to lead to undesired reactions of the solute and thus affect qualitative and quantitative results. In this paper, sonolytic reactions of phenanthrene in common organic extraction solutions were examined using a 20kHz ultrasonic probe under conditions commonly used for ultrasonic extraction. Extraction parameters including phenanthrene concentration, solvent type, pulse length,

Phenanthrene-degrading phenotype of Alcaligenes faecalis AFK2.

A phenanthrene-degrading bacterium that assimilated a wide range of organic compounds was isolated from a soil sample and identified as Alcaligenes faecalis strain AFK2. The strain degraded phenanthrene through protocatechuate, but did not utilize naphthalene. The phenanthrene-degrading phenotype (Phn+) of AFK2 disappeared after 20 successive subcultures in a mineral salts medium containing o-phthalate or after subculture in nutrient broth containing mitomycin C. The results suggested that the Phn+ phenotype of this strain might be encoded by extrachromosomal genes.

Fate and behaviour of phenanthrene in the natural and artificial soils.

OECD artificial soil has been used routinely as a standardized substrate for soil toxicity tests. However, can be the fate, behaviour and effects of contaminants in artificial soil extrapolated to natural soils? The aim of our study was to verify this hypothesis by comparing the loss, extraction, and bioavailability of phenanthrene in three artificial and three natural soils of comparable organic carbon content. Soils were spiked with 14C-phenanthrene and total 14C-activity change, the fractions extracted by dichloromethane, 70% ethanol, and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, the fraction minera

Equilibrium sorption of phenanthrene by soil humic acids.

This study investigated the effect of chemical heterogeneity of humic acids (HAs) on the equilibrium sorption of phenanthrene by HA extracts. Six HA samples were extracted from three different soils with 0.5 M NaOH and 0.1 M Na4P2O7 and were characterized with elemental analysis, infrared spectrometry, and solid-state 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. The equilibrium sorption measurements were carried out with a batch technique and using the six HA solids as the sorbents and phenanthrene as the sorbate. The measured sorption isotherm data were fitted to the Freundlich equation

Selective apoptosis in hepatic stellate cells mediates the antifibrotic effect of phenanthrenes from Dendrobium nobile.

Regardless of the etiology, cellular death of the liver parenchymal hepatocyte seems to be a primary event of hepatic fibrogenesis, which ultimately results in hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation and the synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins. Recently it has been demonstrated that hepatic fibrosis can be a reversible process when the stimulus is properly eliminated. Apoptotic removal of active HSC is considered an essential part of the resolution. By employing the HSC cell line, HSC-T6, it was found that the methanol extract of Dendrobium nobile stem significantly inhibited the prolife
