Mammalian pheromones.

Mammalian pheromones control a myriad of innate social behaviors and acutely regulate hormone levels. Responses to pheromones are highly robust, reproducible, and stereotyped and likely involve developmentally predetermined neural circuits. Here, I review several facets of pheromone transduction in mammals, including (a) chemosensory receptors and signaling components of the main olfactory epithelium and vomeronasal organ involved in pheromone detection; (b) pheromone-activated neural circuits subject to sex-specific and state-dependent modulation; and (c) the striking chemical diversity of ma

Pheromones cause disease: pheromone/odourant transduction.

This paper compares two models of the sense of smell and demonstrates that the new model has advantages over the accepted model with implications for medical research. The accepted transduction model had an odourant or pheromone contacting an aqueous sensory lymph then movement through it to a receptor membrane beneath. If the odourant or pheromone were non-soluble, the odourant/pheromone supposedly would be bound to a soluble protein in the lymph to be carried across. Thus, an odourant/carrier protein complex physically moved through the receptor lymph/mucus to interact with a membrane bound

Fatty Acid Origin of Insect Pheromones.

Pheromones are utilized to a great extent in insects. Many of these pheromones are biosynthesized through a pathway involving fatty acids. This chapter will provide examples where the biosynthetic pathways of fatty acid-derived pheromones have been studied in detail. These include pheromones from Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera. Many species of Lepidoptera utilize fatty acids as precursors to pheromones with a functional group that include aldehydes, alcohols, and acetate esters. In addition, the biosynthesis of hydrocarbons will be briefly examined because many insects utilize hydroc

Peptide and protein pheromones in amphibians.

Purification, characterization and biological activity of urodele and anuran sex-pheromones were reviewed. Female-attracting pheromones obtained from the abdominal gland of Cynops pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda males are peptides consisting of 10 amino acid residues being designated sodefrin and silefrin, respectively. Each pheromone attracted only conspecific females. Molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding sodefrin and silefrin revealed that both are generated from precursor proteins. Synthesis of these pheromones is regulated by prolactin (PRL) and androgen. Responsiveness of the female vomerona

In search of human skin pheromones.

The term pheromone was first designated by Karlson and Lüscher in 1959 as a substance secreted by an animal to the outside of that individual, which was then received by another individual, classically of the same species, and which then elicited some behavioral or developmental response in the latter. They composed the term from the Greek words pherein, which means to bring or to transfer, and hormon, which means to excite. In the usual context, this response in the second individual is of a sexual or of a reproductive physiologic nature, although sometimes the definition might even be extend

Reverse Chemical Ecology Suggests Putative Primate Pheromones.

Pheromonal communication is widespread among living organisms, but in apes and particularly in humans there is currently no strong evidence for such phenomenon. Among primates, lemurs use pheromones to communicate within members of the same species, whereas in some monkeys such capabilities seem to be lost. Chemical communication in humans appears to be impaired by the lack or malfunctioning of biochemical tools and anatomical structures mediating detection of pheromones. Here, we report on a pheromone-carrier protein (SAL) adopting a "reverse chemical ecology" approach to get insights on the

Lack of evidence for pheromones in lemurs.

As chemicals that elicit unlearned, functionally specialized, and species-specific responses [1] or 'stereotyped behavior' [2], pheromones differ from mammalian scent signatures that comprise complex, variable mixtures, convey multiple messages via learned chemical combinations, and elicit generalized responses [1]. Studying ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) behavior and semiochemistry, a recent study by Shirasu, Ito et al. [2] claimed to have identified "the first sex pheromones in primates." However, reliance on one male in most chemical procedures and on few females in behavioral procedures c

Nematode-trapping fungi eavesdrop on nematode pheromones.

The recognition of molecular patterns associated with specific pathogens or food sources is fundamental to ecology and plays a major role in the evolution of predator-prey relationships. Recent studies showed that nematodes produce an evolutionarily highly conserved family of small molecules, the ascarosides, which serve essential functions in regulating nematode development and behavior. Here, we show that nematophagous fungi, natural predators of soil-dwelling nematodes, can detect and respond to ascarosides. Nematophagous fungi use specialized trapping devices to catch and consume nematodes

Current research in canine and feline pheromones.

Pheromonotherapy seems to be a new therapeutic approach allowing practitioners to tackle the treatment of behavioral disorders in a natural, specific, and safe way. Although the efficacy of pheromones has been assessed in some specific behavioral problems, it seems that their range of action could cover the wide field of reduction of stress. Therefore, the use of pheromones should not be reduced to treatment of behavioral disorders (potentially associated with psychotropes or a behavioral modification program) but should be included in a strategy of improving the welfare of pets in veterinary

A sex pheromone isomer modulates pheromone receptor sensitivity in Bombyx mori.

Bombykol, (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadien-1-ol, is a sole sex pheromone component essential for mating in the silkmoth Bombyx mori. The bombykol isomer EE-kol is consistently present across all silkmoth strains tested, but its role in sex pheromone communication remains unclear. Previous studies have indicated that BmOR1 is involved in EE-kol detection. Here, we reevaluated the function using the Xenopus oocyte expression system and two-electrode voltage clamp recording method. EE-kol elicited inward currents in BmOR1-expressing oocytes only at very high concentrations and with a markedly smaller res

Pheromone gland development and pheromone production in lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

The sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) is the main vector of American visceral leishmaniasis. Adult males produce a terpenoid sex pheromone that in some cases also acts as male aggregation pheromone. We have analyzed the correlation between male pheromone production levels and pheromone gland cell morphogenesis after adult emergence from pupae. The abdominal tergites of L. longipalpis males were dissected and fixed in glutaraldehyde for transmission electron microscopy, or the pheromone was extracted in analytical grade hexane. Pheromone anosmia in a scarab beetle induced by in vivo inhibition of a pheromone-degrading enzyme.

Previous biochemical evidence suggests that a cytochrome P450 specific to male antennae of the pale-brown chafer, Phyllopertha diversa, has evolved as a pheromone-degrading enzyme. By using a bioinformatics approach, we have now cloned three P450 cDNAs: CYP4AW1, CYP4AW2, and CYP6AT1. RT-PCR indicated that CYP4AW2 is expressed in all tissues examined, that CYP6AT1 is antennae-rich, and that CYP4AW1 is antennae-specific. Both tissue specificity and electrophysiological studies strongly support that CYP4AW1 in P. diversa is a pheromone-degrading enzyme involved in pheromone inactivation. Highly s

Egg Hatching, Peptide Pheromones, and Endoproteinases in Barnacles.

The striped barnacle, Amphibalanus amphitrite, is a simultaneous hermaphrodite crustacean that broods eggs. The eggs are physically and enzymatically cleaned in the mantle by the barnacle to manage biofouling during incubation. There is no physiological connection between the embryos and the adult. Instead, barnacles use enzyme products as pheromones to coordinate behavioral, physiological, and biochemical processes involved in egg hatching and larval release. Known larval release pheromones are peptides generated by exogenous trypsins that act on proteins. We characterized barnacle brooding e

State-dependent responses to sex pheromones in mouse.

A single sensory cue can evoke different behaviors that vary by recipient. Responses may be influenced by sex, internal state, experience, genotype, and coincident environmental stimuli. Pheromones are powerful inducers of mouse behavior, yet pheromone responses are not always stereotyped. For example, male and female mice respond differently to sex pheromones while mothers and virgin females respond differently to pup cues. Here, we review the origins of variability in responses to reproductive pheromones. Recent advances have indicated how response variability may arise through modulation at

Tick pheromones and their use in tick control.

Tick pheromones that regulate assembly, attraction/aggregation/attachment, and mating behavior have been described. Most of the compounds regulating these behaviors are purines, substituted phenols, or cholesteryl esters. Other pheromonal compounds include organic acids, hematin, or ecdysteroids. Novel devices have been developed that combine the specific compounds comprising these pheromones with an acaricide. When applied to tick-infested vegetation or directly to the body surfaces of livestock or companion animals, these devices are effective for tick control. This review summarizes the cur

Olfaction and Pheromones: Uncanonical Sensory Influences and Bulbar Interactions.

The rodent main and accessory olfactory systems (AOS) are considered functionally and anatomically segregated information-processing pathways. Each system is devoted to the detection of volatile odorants and pheromones, respectively. However, a growing number of evidences supports a cooperative interaction between them. For instance, at least four non-canonical receptor families (i.e., different from olfactory and vomeronasal receptor families) have been recently discovered. These atypical receptor families are expressed in the sensory organs of the nasal cavity and furnish parallel processing

The role of pheromones and biostimulation in animal reproduction.

It is now known that pheromonal communication plays an important role in mammalian behaviour and reproductive processes. Chemical communication with pheromones is one means of transmitting such information. In mammals, signalling and priming pheromones are thought to act either singly or in combination through olfaction, auditory, visual (sight) or tactile stimuli. Pheromones are air-borne chemical substances ("signals") released in the urine or feces of animals or secreted from cutaneous glands that are perceived by the olfactory system and that elicit both behavioural and endocrine responses

Lipocalins of boar salivary glands binding odours and pheromones.

Large amounts of an odorant-binding protein have been isolated from submaxillary glands of mature male pig. This polypeptide molecule is sex-specific, being absent in females. On electrophoretic gels under denaturing conditions it migrated as a broad band with an apparent molecular mass of around 20 kDa. Electrospray mass spectrometry revealed the presence of three main components, whose mass differences are not interpretable as result of any common post-translational modifications, indicating the presence of distinct polypeptide chains. N-terminal Edman degradation yielded a single sequence o
