In search of human skin pheromones.

The term pheromone was first designated by Karlson and Lüscher in 1959 as a substance secreted by an animal to the outside of that individual, which was then received by another individual, classically of the same species, and which then elicited some behavioral or developmental response in the latter. They composed the term from the Greek words pherein, which means to bring or to transfer, and hormon, which means to excite. In the usual context, this response in the second individual is of a sexual or of a reproductive physiologic nature, although sometimes the definition might even be extend

Behavioral and electrophysiological effects of androstadienone, a human pheromone.

Androstadienone is the most prominent androstene present on male human axillary hair and on the male axillary skin surface. We have previously shown that this volatile steroid is able to stimulate [corrected] the human female vomeronasal organ in picogram (pg) quantities, resulting in changes in autonomic activity. These effects are gender-specific. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether androstadienone could be considered a human pheromone by altering behavior as well as autonomic function. Forty normal female subjects were randomized in a double-blind manner to receive eit

Effect of putative pheromones on the electrical activity of the human vomeronasal organ and olfactory epithelium.

The summated receptor potential was recorded from the vomeronasal organ (VNO) and olfactory epithelium (OE) of 49 human subjects of both sexes (18 to 55 years old) using surface non-polarizable silver-silver chloride electrodes. 15-25 pg of human putative pheromones, clove oil and a diluent were administered to the VNO or the OE in 0.3-1 s pulses from a 0.05 mm dia cannula connected to a multichannel delivery system. Local stimulation of the VNO produces negative potentials of 1.8-11.6 mV showing adaptation. Responses are not obtained when the recording electrode is placed in the nasal respira

Pheromone signal transduction in humans: what can be learned from olfactory loss.

Because humans seem to lack neuronal elements in the vomeronasal organ (VNO), many scientists believe that humans are unable to detect pheromones. This view is challenged by the observations that pheromone-like compounds, 4,16-androstadien-3-one (AND) and oestra-1,3,5(10),16-tetraen-3-ol (EST), activate the human hypothalamus. Whether these activations are mediated via VNO, venous blood or olfactory mucosa is presently unknown. To disentangle between the three alternatives, we conducted activation studies in 12 heterosexual males with chronic anosmia because of nasal polyps. Polyposis hampers

A Scientific Basis for Humanae Vitae and Natural Law: The Role of Human Pheromones on Human Sexual Behavior Preferences by Oral Contraceptives and the Abortifacient Effects of Oral Contraceptives.

This article will review Humanae Vitae's predictions of the effect of oral contraceptives (the pill) on male-female relationships and societal behaviors. A scientific, biochemical basis underpinning these predictions is made. Evidence of human pheromones will be given. Evidence for the changes in male and female pheromones caused by the pill is given. Observational and experimental evidence of changes in primate and human behaviors by pheromones is detailed. The role these changes have caused in attractiveness and selection of mate by both males and females in preferences concerning major hist

High Incidence of Multiple-Drug-Resistant Pheromone-Responsive Plasmids and Transmissions of VanA-Type Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococcus faecalis between Livestock and Humans in Taiwan.

A total of seventy VanA-type vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) isolates obtained in Taiwan in the early 2000s were retrospectively characterized. Forty isolates were obtained from human patients and thirty from livestock. Of these VRE isolates, twenty-three (57.5%) of the human VRE and thirty (100%) of the livestock VRE were Enterococcus faecalis, and the remaining seventeen (42.5%) of the human VRE were E. faecium. Of the 53 E. faecalis isolates, twenty-two (96%) of the human VRE and thirty (100%) of the livestock VRE exhibited a high level of resistance to vancomycin and sensitivity to

Reverse Chemical Ecology Suggests Putative Primate Pheromones.

Pheromonal communication is widespread among living organisms, but in apes and particularly in humans there is currently no strong evidence for such phenomenon. Among primates, lemurs use pheromones to communicate within members of the same species, whereas in some monkeys such capabilities seem to be lost. Chemical communication in humans appears to be impaired by the lack or malfunctioning of biochemical tools and anatomical structures mediating detection of pheromones. Here, we report on a pheromone-carrier protein (SAL) adopting a "reverse chemical ecology" approach to get insights on the

Modelling Sand Fly Lutzomyia longipalpis Attraction to Host Odour: Synthetic Sex-Aggregation Pheromone Dominates the Response.

Zoontic visceral leishmaniasis (ZVL) due to Leishmania infantum is a potentially fatal protozoan parasitic disease of humans and dogs. In the Americas, dogs are the reservoir and the sand fly, Lutzomyia longipalpis, the principal vector. A synthetic version of the male sand fly produced sex-aggregation pheromone attracts both female and male conspecifics to co-located insecticide, reducing both reservoir infection and vector abundance. However the effect of the synthetic pheromone on the vector's "choice" of host (human, animal reservoir, or dead-end host) for blood feeding in the presence of

Attraction of Lutzomyia longipalpis to synthetic sex-aggregation pheromone: Effect of release rate and proximity of adjacent pheromone sources.

In South America, the Protist parasite that causes visceral leishmaniasis, a potentially fatal human disease, is transmitted by blood-feeding female Lutzomyia longipalpis sand flies. A synthetic copy of the male produced sex-aggregation pheromone offers new opportunities for vector control applications. We have previously shown that the pheromone placed in plastic sachets (lures) can attract both females and males to insecticide treated sites for up to 3 months. To use the pheromone lure in a control program we need to understand how the application of lures in the field can be optimised. In t

A Drosophila protein family implicated in pheromone perception is related to Tay-Sachs GM2-activator protein.

Low volatility, lipid-like cuticular hydrocarbon pheromones produced by Drosophila melanogaster females play an essential role in triggering and modulating mating behavior, but the chemosensory mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Recently, we showed that the CheB42a protein, which is expressed in only 10 pheromone-sensing taste hairs on the front legs of males, modulates progression to late stages of male courtship behavior in response to female-specific cuticular hydrocarbons. Here we report that expression of all 12 genes in the CheB gene family is predominantly or exclusively gust

Synthetic sex pheromone attracts the leishmaniasis vector Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae) to traps in the field.

Improving vector control remains a key goal in reducing the world's burden of infectious diseases. More cost-effective approaches to vector control are urgently needed, particularly because vaccines are unavailable and treatment is prohibitively expensive. The causative agent of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL), Leishmania chagasi, Cunha and Chagas (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), is transmitted between animal and human hosts by blood-feeding female sand flies attracted to mating aggregations formed on or above host animals by male-produced sex pheromones. Solar tick trap with a pheromone lure - A stand-in approach for off-host control of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato ticks.

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.), the brown dog tick, transmits several important haemo-protozoan and rickettsial pathogens to dogs. Effective control of these ticks is entirely by the use of acaricidal preparations both on and off the host. Indiscriminate use of acaricides can cause environmental pollution and toxicity to humans as well as development of acaricidal resistance in ticks. As an alternative control strategy, a novel, eco-friendly and economical solar tick trap, which attracts ticks using pheromones and kills them by electrocution, was fabricated for use in kennels to co

Prior exposure to Hedione, a model of pheromone, does not affect female ratings of male facial attractiveness or likeability.

The existence of pheromones in humans is controversial, partly because of definitional difficulties and partly because of the question of possible chemical substances. The synthetic compound Methyl dihydrojasmonate (Hedione) is potent to bind to vomeronasal-type 1 receptors (VN1R1s) and activate limbic areas of the brain in a sex-specific manner. However, one of the most important definitional points for a human pheromone effect has not yet been investigated, i.e., whether smelling Hedione, a model of pheromone, has a behavioral effect. We tested in females whether Hedione leads to altered per

Nose, Sex, and Sexuality.

The nose is a prominent structure of the human midface with an individually varying shape and size. It fulfills physiological functions through breathing, smelling, and immune surveillance. But is the nose also involved in sex and sexuality? We analyzed the history of physiognomy and their myths from Greek and Roman times through the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Enlightenment. Sigmund Freud stimulated further research on this topic through psychoanalysis. At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, otolaryngologists Wilhelm Fließ (1858-1928) in Berlin and John Noland Mackenzie (1853-1925) in

The Proteomic and Transcriptomic Landscapes Altered by Rgg2/3 Activity in Streptococcus pyogenes.

Streptococcus pyogenes, otherwise known as Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is an important and highly adaptable human pathogen with the ability to cause both superficial and severe diseases. Understanding how S. pyogenes senses and responds to its environment will likely aid in determining how it causes a breadth of diseases. One regulatory network involved in GAS's ability to sense and respond to the changing environment is the Rgg2/3 quorum sensing (QS) system, which responds to metal and carbohydrate availability and regulates changes to the bacterial surface. To better understand the impact o

Synthetic sex pheromone in a long-lasting lure attracts the visceral leishmaniasis vector, Lutzomyia longipalpis, for up to 12 weeks in Brazil.

Current control methodologies have not prevented the spread of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) across Brazil. Here, we describe the development of a new tool for controlling the sand fly vector of the disease: a long-lasting lure, which releases a synthetic male sex pheromone, attractive to both sexes of Lutzomyia longipalpis. This device could be used to improve the effectiveness of residual insecticide spraying as a means of sand fly control, attracting L. longipalpis to insecticide-treated animal houses, where they could be killed in potentially large numbers over a number of weeks. Canonical heterotrimeric G proteins regulating mating and virulence of Cryptococcus neoformans.

Perturbation of pheromone signaling modulates not only mating but also virulence in Cryptococcus neoformans, an opportunistic human pathogen known to encode three Galpha, one Gbeta, and two Ggamma subunit proteins. We have found that Galphas Gpa2 and Gpa3 exhibit shared and distinct roles in regulating pheromone responses and mating. Gpa2 interacted with the pheromone receptor homolog Ste3alpha, Gbeta subunit Gpb1, and RGS protein Crg1. Crg1 also exhibited in vitro GAP activity toward Gpa2. These findings suggest that Gpa2 regulates mating through a conserved signaling mechanism. Moreover, we

Semiochemicals modulating bed bug behaviour.

The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius (Cimicidae, Hemiptera), is obligate haematophagous and can carry pathogens but is not known to transmit diseases to humans in natural settings. Bed bugs are activated and guided by semiochemicals and heat by potential hosts, as well as by an aggregation pheromone when searching for food and home. No sexual pheromone has been detected in bed bugs, which mate through traumatic insemination. First, after mounting, males are able to distinguish between large nymphs, other males, and females. To avoid unwanted traumatic inseminations, nymphs and adults emit an
