The 'worm' in our brain. An anatomical, historical, and philological study on the vermis cerebelli.

The cell doctrine-the theory of ventricular localization of the mental faculties-includes Galen's idea of a locking or valve mechanism between the middle and the rear ventricle. The anatomical substrate was the vermiform epiphysis, known today as the vermis cerebelli. This entity played a significant role in brain physiology even though its appearance, texture, and location changed over time. This article tells the story of the "worm's" transformation from Galen to Vesalius and beyond. Until the time of Albertus Magnus (c. 1200-1280 ce), the worm corresponded to the vermis cerebelli. From the

Philological analysis of ancient Egyptian recipes supported by modern chemical profiling approaches.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Ancient Egyptian sickness categories are poorly described, making it a challenge to correlate use of materia medica with sickness experience. Nevertheless, many identified ingredients are reported to have therapeutic potential, often used to support Egyptological interpretations of categories. Crucially, these interpretations fail to consider the impact of ancient processing methods. AIMS OF STUDY: We examine two sickness categories using traditional philological techniques, and then recreated and profiled three recipes to explore whether putative properties of

Did Suetonius really call gout morbus dominorum? A philological and historico-medical reconstruction.

Current scientific literature often defines gout as morbus dominorum, in agreement with the Greek-Roman representation of podagra (ποδάγρα, literally "foot-trap") as a consequence of gluttony and libertinage. Several authors place the origins of this expression with the Roman writer Suetonius, without however quoting any specific primary source. We have investigated this problem again and scrutinized primary sources ranging from the Roman World to the early Middle Ages. A search on the database of Latin texts for the expression morb* domin* failed to identify any positive correspondence, not o

The influence of Chinese literature on social identity and collectivistic values: Insights from two studies comparing philology students and general readers.

The psychological functions of Chinese literature have received limited empirical attention despite its central role in cultural transmission. The present research examined how engagement with different genres of Chinese literature relates to social identity strength and collectivistic value orientation, with particular attention to identity-related mechanisms and individual differences in familiarity. Across two complementary studies, we combined experimental and correlational approaches grounded in Social Identity Theory and cultural transmission perspectives. Study 1 employed an experimenta

"At times these ancient facts seem to lie before me like a patient on a hospital bed'--retrospective diagnosis and ancient medical history.

Research in ancient medical history, Greek and Roman as well as Mesopotamian and Egyptian, is usually done by philologically trained scholars; the ability to read texts in their original language is fundamental (though not sufficient) for any substantial work. There is, however, in such works the notion that something may be missing in fully understanding medicine of a certain time and culture. Does a medical historian of ancient medicine need, in addition to his philological and historical skills, a medical education? And in what way is a 'medical approach' to ancient medicine useful? Is it p

[Scabies and the significance of "suriones" in the handwritten manuscripts of Hildegard von Bingen].

In her studies on nature and medicine, the "Liber simplicis medicinae" (LSM or "Physica") and the "Liber compositae medicinae" (LCM or "Causae et Curae"), Hildegard von Bingen mentions Scabies (mange) in several passages. She characterizes "suren aut (= or) sneuelzen" as the cause of the disease, which she calls also "gracillimi vermiculi", that is, tiny worms that burrow into the human skin ("ubi suren aut sneuelzen hominem comedendo ledunt"). In this context the meanings of the German-ancestor terms "suren aut sneuelzen", which are found in the Latin text concerning the "Alia Mynza", are sti

Ipiq-Enlil and the Early Development of Veterinary Specialisation: Reassessing the Mari Letter from the Perspective of Veterinary History.

The origins of veterinary medicine remain a subject of debate. The search for the "first veterinarian" has often led to the application of modern professional concepts to ancient societies. Among the Mesopotamian sources, particular attention has been given to ARM XXVI/1, text 270 from the royal archives of Mari, in which Jean-Marie Durand described Ipiq-Enlil as une espèce de vétérinaire ("a kind of veterinarian"). Despite the potential importance of this interpretation for the history of veterinary medicine, it has never been critically examined in the veterinary literature. The present stud

[Wilhelm Baum : Pioneer of surgery in Danzig, mentor and teacher of Theodor Billroth, professor in Greifswald and Göttingen].

Wilhelm Baum was born on 10 November 1799 in Elbing and died at 84 years old on 6 September 1883. In Danzig he made a name for himself in the fight against cholera. He was the first honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city. At 43 years old he was appointed to the chair for surgery in Greifswald without having published any works. 1849 he transferred to Göttingen. As a result of his bibliophilism and inclination towards philology, he had collected the largest library on surgery in Germany. He was famous as an academic teacher. Although in 1872 he and his pupil Billroth were among the founders of

Molecular Epidemiology and Evolution of European Bat Lyssavirus 2.

Bat rabies cases in Europe are mainly attributed to two lyssaviruses, namely European Bat Lyssavirus 1 (EBLV-1) and European Bat Lyssavirus 2 (EBLV-2). Prior to the death of a bat worker in Finland in 1985, very few bat rabies cases were reported. Enhanced surveillance in the two subsequent years (1986-1987) identified 263 cases (more than a fifth of all reported cases to date). Between 1977 and 2016, 1183 cases of bat rabies were reported, with the vast majority (>97%) being attributed to EBLV-1. In contrast, there have been only 39 suspected cases of EBLV-2, of which 34 have been confirmed b

[Analysis of the divergent meridians of twelve meridians].

This paper analyzes the problems existing in the current theory of divergent meridian ("Jingbie"), such as the unclear route of divergent meridian, the controversy in the "li-he-chu-ru" and the lack of in-depth research on the theory of "liuhe", clarifies the source and privides insights. The author analyzed the word "Jingbie" by means of the four proofreading methods combined with philology method to explore the origin of "Jingbie ". The divergent meridians is the remnant of the original meridians system in the bamboo and silk documents, which was put into the meridians system after being sor

[Nepenthe].

Iliad and Odyssey are two major literary sources on various phenomena related to human experience and knowledge. In the Odyssey we find references to the nepenthes, a mythical substance which can change the mood, causing sorrow and anger to be forgotten. We can not identify it with any of the well known substances that have these properties, such as opium from the opium poppy, the Egyptian kyfi or cannabis in the Scythians. Ancient Greeks used various anxiolytic, hypnotic and narcotic substances, but phenomena of addiction or withdrawal are not clearly described, with the exception of wine. Wi

Scorpion Venom Peptides in Ophthalmology: Insights from the Babylonian Talmud.

Historical medical texts can reveal overlooked therapeutic approaches relevant to modern ophthalmology. This perspective revisits a remedy from the Babylonian Talmud prescribing a mixture of scorpion and kohl for an eye condition called buruqti (also transliterated as beroketi), traditionally translated as cataract. Through philologic, zoologic, and pathologic analysis, we argue that buruqti likely refers to a corneal or conjunctival lesion rather than a true lens opacity. The description within the remedy of the scorpion's "seven-beaded tail" is interpreted symbolically within the cultural an

[The "Limophōros": Polybius III, 87, 2].

The word "limophōros", a hapax legomenon appearing in Polybius' Histories, does not mean scurvy, but rather scabies. Polybius created the word to describe an illness he believed was derived from a nutritional deficit, but can really only be seen as an attempt to describe an illness the etiology of which he was wholly unfamiliar.

Death of Socrates: a likely case of poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: The death of Socrates in 399 BCE is described in Plato's dialogue, the Phaedo, written an unknown time afterwards from accounts by others. THE EVIDENCE: Socrates' death has almost always been attributed to his drinking an extract of poison hemlock, Conium maculatum, despite apparent discrepancies between the clinical features described in classical translations of the Phaedo and general clinical experience of poisoning with the toxic alkaloids it contains. EVALUATION: Recent acute philological analysis of the original Greek text has resolved many of the discrepancies by showing

[On two antique medical texts].

The two texts presented here--Regimento proueytoso contra ha pestenença [literally, "useful regime against pestilence"] and Modus curandi cum balsamo ["curing method using balm"]--represent the extent of Portugal's known medical library until circa 1530, produced in gothic letters by foreign printers: Germany's Valentim Fernandes, perhaps the era's most important printer, who worked in Lisbon between 1495 and 1518, and Germdo Galharde, a Frenchman who practiced his trade in Lisbon and Coimbra between 1519 and 1560. Modus curandi, which came to light in 1974 thanks to bibliophile José de Pina M

[Examining the origin and evolution of 'Jiao Chang'].

Jiao Chang was a disease, recorded in both ancient and contemporary medical literature. However, its conceptual understanding remained inconsistent and even fallacious. This paper systematically examines the origin and evolution of Jiao Chang in terms of connotation by drawing on methodologies from philology, historiography and conceptual history. The concept of Jiao Chang originated from the linguistic descriptions of its physical symptom "hemorrhoids connecting with the Qian Yin (perineum region anterior to acupoint Hui Yin or urogenital triangle)", and the symptom "urinating with feaces or
