Phytochemistry and biological activities of Phlomis species.

The genus Phlomis L. belongs to the Lamiaceae family and encompasses 100 species native to Turkey, North Africa, Europe and Asia. It is a popular herbal tea enjoyed for its taste and aroma. Phlomis species are used to treat various conditions such as diabetes, gastric ulcer, hemorrhoids, inflammation, and wounds. This review aims to summarize recent research on the phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of the genus Phlomis, with particular emphasis on its ethnobotanical uses. The essential oil of Phomis is composed of four chemotypes dominated by monoterpenes (alpha-pinene, limonene an

Antimicrobial and Antiviral Compounds of Phlomis viscosa Poiret.

Phlomis viscosa Poiret (an evergreen shrub) represents a valuable source of medicinal compounds. In this study, we discovered compounds with antimicrobial and antiviral properties. The aim of this study was to identify compounds of P. viscosa and estimate the antimicrobial and antiviral activity of its phytochemicals. The volatile compounds were identified using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis. For the identification of nonvolatile components of the extracts, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC

Phytochemical analysis and chemophenetic evaluation of Phlomis fruticosa L.

In this work, the first complete phytochemical analysis ever performed on a European population of Phlomis fruticosa L., led to the identification of twelve metabolites from its leaf ethanolic extract: pheophytin a (1), verbascoside (2), leucosceptoside A (3), apigenin (4), kaempferol (5), 5-hydroxy-8-epi-loganin (6), lamiide (7), penstemoside (8), 5-deoxy-pulchelloside I (9), quinic acid (10), vanillic acid (11) and glycerol (12). Their chemophenetic value was evaluated individuating and even suggesting chemophenetic markers at various levels.

INTRODUCTION: Phlomis is one of the medicinal genera of Lamiaceae. This genus has unique medicinal properties. Consequently, appropriate methods need to be described for the identification of the chemical compounds. OBJECTIVE: A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique on a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (TQMS) was used for separation and identification of leaf flavonoid compounds for seven Phlomis species including Phlomis kurdia, Ph. aucheri, Ph. olivieri, Ph. bruguieri, Ph. persica, Ph. anisodonta and Ph. elliptica. METHODOLOGY: The flavonoid solution of ai

Investigating the effect of Phlomis lanceolata Boiss and hohen on cancer cell lines.

Phlomis lanceolata is a medicinal plant that has long been used to treat various conditions such as diabetes, gastric ulcer, hemorrhoids, inflammation and wounds. As most of Phlomis species have shown cytotoxic activity against proliferation of different cell lines, a biological investigation of P. lanceolata was carried out in this study. The aim of this study was to find out the in vitro cytotoxic activity of total extract and different fractions of Phlomis lanceolata on four cell lines. Cytotoxic activity of the metanolic total extract and partition fractions of chloroform, ethyl acetate an

Phlomis umbrosa Turcz. Water Extract Attenuates Dexamethasone-Induced Muscle Atrophy by Regulating PI3K/Akt/mTOR Pathway.

Skeletal muscles, attached to bones via tendons, enable physical movement in animals. Muscle atrophy is associated with a decline in muscle mass and function and can detrimentally impact quality of life, leading to muscle weakness, altered fiber properties, and, ultimately, sarcopenia. Phlomis umbrosa Turcz. (Korean name: Han-Sok-Dan) has been used as a herbal medicine in Southeast Asia since ancient times. Although several studies have explored the properties of Han-Sok-Dan, further research is warranted to establish its therapeutic benefits for muscle function. This study investigated the ef

Vasodilator effect of Phlomis bracteosa constituents is mediated through dual endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent pathways.

This study describes the vasorelaxant potential of some pure compounds isolated from Phlomis bracteosa L. marrubiin, phlomeoic acid, and two new constituents labeled as RA and RB. In rat thoracic aortic rings denuded of endothelium, marrubiin, phlomeoic acid, RA, and RB caused relaxation of high K(+) (80 mM) and phenylephrine (1 μM)-induced contractions at the concentration range of 1.0-1000 μg/mL. Marrubiin, phlomeoic acid, RA, and RB concentration dependently (3.0-10 μg/mL) shifted the Ca(++) curves to the right obtained in Ca(++)-free medium. The vasodilator effect of marrubiin, phlomeoic a

Anti-inflammatory, analgesic and in vivo-in vitro wound healing potential of the Phlomis rigida Labill. extract.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The preparations of Phlomis aerial parts are used traditionally in Anatolia for wound healing and in inflammatory disorders. METHODS: For the identification of the active fraction, the air dried aerial parts of Phlomis rigida Labill. were extracted by methanol and fractionated successively by n-hexane, dichloromethane and ethyl acetate, respectively. The phenolic constituents were characterized by the Folin-Ciocaltheu method; the antioxidant activity was performed by ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays. An in vitro/in vivo hepatotoxicity and hepatoprotection evaluation of a defatted extract and a phenolic fraction from Phlomis tuberosa, administered alone and in a carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced metabolic bioactivation model, was performed. The extract and the phenolic fraction were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine the total flavonoid content, to identify flavonoids and to quantify verbascoside. In addition, total polyphenolics in the samples were expressed as gallic acid equivalents. Applied alone, the extract and the fraction (5, 10 and 50 µg/mL) di
