Polioencephalomalacia in captive harbour seals (Phoca vitulina).

In a colony of 11 harbour seals (Phoca vitulina Linné 1758) two episodes of central nervous disorders occurred within 2 years causing fatalities in seven adult animals. Clinical signs comprised dyspnoea, anorexia, apathy, incoordination and lateral recumbency. Vitamin B complex therapy was successful once. Pathomorphological examination of seven carcasses revealed acute and subacute malacia of the cerebellar grey matter. Additional acute malacic lesions located in the cerebral cortices and basal ganglia were observed. Mesencephalic nuclei were less severely affected and displayed acute changes

Arcanobacterium phocae infection in mink (Neovison vison), seals (Phoca vitulina, Halichoerus grypus) and otters (Lutra lutra).

BACKGROUND: Infectious skin disorders are not uncommon in mink. Such disorders are important as they have a negative impact on animal health and welfare as well as on the quality and value of the fur. This study presents the isolation of Arcanobacterium phocae from mink with severe skin lesions and other pathological conditions, and from wild seals and otters. RESULTS: In 2015, A. phocae was isolated for the first time in Denmark from outbreaks of dermatitis in mink farms. The outbreaks affected at least 12 farms. Originating from these 12 farms, 23 animals cultured positive for A. phocae. Th

Streptococcus phocae-Associated Pyothorax Secondary to Verminous Perforative Esophagitis in a Juvenile Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) in the UK.

A stranded juvenile harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) was necropsied following acute dyspnea and death. Necropsy revealed an esophageal perforation caused by fourth-stage Contracaecum osculatum larvae with Streptococcus phocae-associated pyothorax and aspiration pneumonia. Pyothorax is uncommon in seals, and S. phocae is considered a novel etiology, secondary to verminous esophageal perforation.

Spatially Estimating Disturbance of Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina).

Tidewater glacial fjords in Alaska provide habitat for some of the largest aggregations of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina), with calved ice serving as platforms for birthing and nursing pups, molting, and resting. These fjords have also been popular destinations for tour ships for more than a century, with dramatic increases in vessel traffic since the 1980s. Seals on ice are known to flush into the water when approached by tour ships, but estimating the exposure to disturbance across populations is difficult. Using aerial transect sampling while simultaneously tracking vessel movements, we esti

Comparative Genomics of 42 Arcanobacterium phocae Strains.

For the last 13 years, the fur industry in Europe has suffered from epidemic spouts of a severe necrotizing pyoderma. It affects all species currently farmed for fur and causes animal welfare problems and significant losses to the farmers. The causative agent of this disease was identified as Arcanobacterium phocae. Previously, this bacterium has been isolated from seals and other marine mammals, apparently causing wound and lung infections. Attempts at antibiotic treatment have been unsuccessful and the current advice on preventing the disease is to cull all animals with clinical signs. This

An outbreak of leptospirosis in seals (Phoca vitulina) in captivity.

An outbreak of leptospirosis in seals (Phoca vitulina) in captivity is described. In a zoo in The Netherlands 5 adult seals died within 12 days. At necropsy all animals showed signs of acute septicaemia, consistent with acute leptospirosis. Serological examination of one animal was positive for antibodies against Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae and the serologically closely related serovar Copenhageni. Polymerase chain reaction was positive in one other animal. 8 nutria (Myocastor coypus) were examined, serologically, through bacteriological culture and PCR. 81,8% (9/11) wer

Vibrissal sensitivity in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

Prior efforts to characterize the capabilities of the vibrissal system in seals have yielded conflicting results. Here, we measured the sensitivity of the vibrissal system of a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) to directly coupled sinusoidal stimuli delivered by a vibrating plate. A trained seal was tested in a psychophysical paradigm to determine the smallest velocity that was detectable at nine frequencies ranging from 10 to 1000 Hz. The stimulus plate was driven by a vibration shaker and the velocity of the plate at each frequency-amplitude combination was calibrated with a laser vibrometer. To

Pathological findings in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina): 1996-2005.

Between 1996 and 2005 the carcasses of 355 harbour seals originating from the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, were investigated for pathological changes. The animals were collected before (n=280) and after (n=75) the second phocine distemper virus (PDV) epizootic in 2002. The seals were either found dead or were killed due to severe illness. Necropsy was performed in each case, in addition to histopathological, immunohistochemical, microbiological and parasitological examinations. Throughout the period of study, the respiratory and alimentary tracts were the organ systems most consistent

The carotid body of the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina richardsi).

The bilateral distribution of carotid body type 1 and 11 cells was investigated in five harbour seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi), by serially sectioning the carotid bifurcation regions. The cells occurred bilaterally in the animals and were also present in one specimen from a sixth animal available for study. The type 1 and 11 cells were located in the space between the internal and external carotid arteries and had a varied relationship to the occipital and condyloid arteries. They lay within a division of connective tissue with irregular but defineable borders and this combination of connect

Postnatal craniomandibular growth in Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina vitulina).

As secondarily aquatic carnivores, seals display several phenotypic differences compared to their terrestrial relatives. Differences in the craniomandibular system are associated with aquatic feeding strategies and involve the absence of oral processing of prey. Since Harbor seal pups are particularly precocial, this raises the question of whether the cranium and mandible achieve adult morphology early during postnatal growth. Here, we took advantage of a unique sample of Phoca vitulina vitulina, quantifying the postnatal growth of the craniomandibular system in 152 specimens ranging from 4 mo

Hiatal hernia in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) pup.

A 2-wk-old stranded harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) rescued by Mystic Aquarium showed signs of the presence of a hiatal hernia during rehabilitation. Contrast radiographs of esophagus and stomach revealed an intrathoracic radiodensity that contains filling defects typical of stomach, consistent with gastric rugal folds. Mural thickening was observed at the level of the cardia consistent with a diagnosis of a hiatal hernia. Although clinical improvement was noted with medical therapy and tube feeding, surgical correction of the hiatal hernia was considered necessary for full resolution. However, o

First Detection of Usutu Virus in Harbor Seals (Phoca vitulina).

The zoonotic Orthoflavivirus Usutu virus (USUV) is distributed throughout Germany, putting hosts at a considerable risk of infection nationwide. Besides birds as reservoir hosts, a broad range of accidental hosts is suspected. However, there are few reports documenting the progression of USUV-associated disease. This case report describes the course of fatal USUV infections in three harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) from a rescue center on the North Sea coast in Germany. Corresponding samples were analyzed using (histo-)pathological, immunohistochemical, molecular and phylogenetic methods. The mos

Inflammatory Pseudotumour in Common Seal (Phoca vitulina): A Case Report.

Pinnipeds, including seals, sea lions and walruses, are marine mammals susceptible to a variety of pathological conditions. Although neoplastic lesions in these species are receiving increased attention, relatively little information is available compared to neoplastic studies in domestic animals. In this report, a 19-year-old intact male common seal (Phoca vitulina) presented with a chronic ulcer on the fifth phalanx. Radiological examination revealed cortical reaction with significant osseous alterations in this animal and in another companion common seal, although the flipper appeared macro

Underwater visual single target acuity in harbor seals (Phoca vitulina).

Single target acuity (STA) is a key measure for understanding visual object perception in harbor seals. While STA was already determined with stationary and moving compact single targets of different contrasts in air, we herein assessed underwater STA with the same stimuli as used for aerial testing for comparison. A two-alternative-forced-choice task was conducted with two trained harbor seals under controlled light and turbidity conditions. Underwater STA was determined as 0.30 deg for stationary and 0.27 deg for moving single targets, and thus matched the previously documented aerial STA fo

Eastern equine encephalitis in a captive harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

A 31-yr-old male, captive harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) was evaluated for a 48-hr period of anorexia followed by the onset of seizures. A prolonged seizure failed to respond to anticonvulsant therapy and the animal was euthanized. At necropsy, no significant gross lesions were identified. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction testing of brain samples was positive for eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) RNA, and serum was positive for anti-EEEV antibodies by plaque reduction neutralization. Histopathologic evaluation revealed severe and multifocal encephalitis with leptomeningitis

West Nile Flavivirus Polioencephalomyelitis in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

A 12-year-old male harbor seal presented with progressive signs of neurologic dysfunction including head tremors, muzzle twitching, clonic spasms, and weakness. Lesions included polioencephalomyelitis with glial nodules, spheroids, neuronophagia, ring hemorrhages, and a few neutrophils. Neurons, fibers, and glial nodules were multifocally colonized with intracytoplasmic West Nile flavivirus antigens that were demonstrated using indirect immunohistochemical analysis. Flavivirus on cultured cells also was isolated and was identified by use of monoclonal antibodies and reverse transcriptase-polym

Laryngeal and soft palate valving in the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina).

Effective 'valving' in the upper aerodigestive tract (UAT) is essential to temporarily separate the digestive and respiratory pathways. Marine mammals are largely dedicated to feeding underwater, and in many cases swallowing prey whole. In seals, little work has been done to explore the anatomy and function of the UAT in the context of valving mechanisms that function to separate food and air pathways. Here we use videofluoroscopy, gross dissection, histology and computed tomography (CT) renderings to explore the anatomy of the larynx and soft palate in the harbour seal (Phoca vitulina), and g
