First Report of Phodopus sungorus Papillomavirus Type 1 Infection in Roborovski Hamsters (Phodopus roborovskii).

Papillomaviruses (PVs) are considered highly species-specific with cospeciation as the main driving force in their evolution. However, a recent increase in the available PV genome sequences has revealed inconsistencies in virus-host phylogenies, which could be explained by adaptive radiation, recombination, host-switching events and a broad PV host range. Unfortunately, with a relatively low number of animal PVs characterized, understanding these incongruities remains elusive. To improve knowledge of biology and the spread of animal PV, we collected 60 swabs of the anogenital and head and neck

Phodopus campbelli detect reduced photoperiod during development but, unlike Phodopus sungorus, retain functional reproductive physiology.

Golden (Mesocricetus auratus) and Siberian (Phodopus sungorus) hamsters are widely used as animal models for seasonal reproduction; but M. auratus shows no developmental delay in short days until after sexual maturity, whereas P. sungorus juveniles delay development in short days. As the photoperiodic response of Phodopus campbelli is not well established, litters of the two Phodopus species were gestated and reared under long days (14 h light:10 h darkness) or short days (10 h light:14 h darkness) until 70 days of age. As expected, under short photoperiod P. sungorus showed reduced body, test

Bacterial pseudomycetoma in dwarf hamster, Phodopus sungorus.

A case of a dwarf hamster with two progressively growing nodules on the right fore limb is described. These were excised following ineffective medical treatment and were submitted for histopathological examination, which revealed bacterial pseudomycetoma in both nodules. To the authors' knowledge this is the first reported case of bacterial pseudomycetoma in a dwarf hamster.

Molecular characterization, prevalence and clinical relevance of Phodopus sungorus papillomavirus type 1 (PsuPV1) naturally infecting Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Phodopus sungorus papillomavirus type 1 (PsuPV1), naturally infecting Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) and clustering in the genus Pipapillomavirus (Pi-PV), is only the second PV type isolated from the subfamily of hamsters. In silico analysis of three independent complete viral genomes obtained from cervical adenocarcinoma, oral squamous cell carcinoma and normal oral mucosa revealed that PsuPV1 encodes characteristic viral proteins (E1, E2, E4, E6, E7, L1 and L2) with conserved functional domains and a highly conserved non-coding region. The overall high prevalence (102/114; 89.5 %) of

Endocrinology of the pregnant Djungarian hamster Phodopus campbelli.

Factors regulating maternal serum progesterone concentrations during pregnancy in the Djungarian hamster Phodopus campbelli were investigated through changes in (1) concentrations of progesterone and oestradiol in the serum and extracted corpus luteum, non-luteal ovary, and placenta during late pregnancy, (2) prolactin concentrations in the serum, and (3) mass of the fetus, placenta, corpus luteum and non-luteal ovary. Early pregnancy (days 1-4) was characterized by surges of prolactin, corpus luteum growth and increased corpus luteum activity as indicated by increases in luteal mass, progeste

The transcriptional cortical response to daily torpor in Phodopus sungorus.

Torpor is an essential evolutionary strategy that allows mammals to conserve resources under extreme environmental conditions. Although the hypothalamus is a key regulator of systemic acclimatisation to energy scarcity and reduced temperature, it remains unclear how the cortex, with its high metabolic demand, endures this state. Here, we performed RNA sequencing on neuronal and non-neuronal nuclei isolated from the cortex of Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) across different seasonal and metabolic states. We found that non-neuronal cells primarily adjust during the seasonal transition fr

Termination of neuroendocrine refractoriness to melatonin in Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Siberian hamsters maintained from birth in a short day length (DL), unlike their long-day counterparts, fail to undergo reproductive development by 5 weeks of age. Instead, reproductive maturation of short-day males is delayed for approximately 20 weeks, at which point neuroendocrine refractoriness to the inhibitory effects of short DLs develops, resulting in growth of the gonads. To terminate refractoriness and re-establish responsiveness to short photoperiods, 10-15 weeks of long-day exposure is required. We assessed whether continuous exposure to long days is necessary to terminate refracto

Hematologic, serologic, and histologic profile of aged Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Biologic samples from 18 (12 female, 6 male) Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) representing an aged colony (17 to 27 mo) were examined. Values for CBC and serum biochemical parameters were determined, and macroscopic and microscopic pathologic evaluations were performed. Blood urea nitrogen levels were significantly higher in male (54.2 ± 14 mg/dL) compared with female (35.3 ± 22 mg/dL) hamsters and correlated histologically with a higher incidence of chronic glomerulonephropathy in males (5 of 6 males; 0 of 12 females). All 18 hamsters had histologic evidence of follicular mite infestatio

Cardiac dynamics during daily torpor in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Djungarian or Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) acclimated to short photoperiod display episodes of spontaneous daily torpor with metabolic rate depressed by approximately 70% and body temperature (T(b)) reduced by approximately 20 degrees C. To study the cardiovascular adjustment to daily torpor in Phodopus, electrocardiogram (ECG) and T(b) were continuously recorded by telemetry during entrance into torpor, in deep torpor, and during arousal from torpor. Minimum T(b) during torpor bouts was approximately 21 degrees C, and heart rate, approximately 349 beats/min at euthermy, displayed mar

Melatonin receptors and signal transduction in photorefractory Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

In seasonally breeding mammals, seasonal alterations in day length are perceived via the pineal hormone melatonin. When exposed to short day lengths, hamsters and other long-day breeders undergo gonadal regression. With chronic exposure (greater than 20 weeks) to short days, however, the animals become photorefractory, or insensitive to the inhibitory influence of short-day melatonin patterns, and gonadal recrudescence occurs. In this report, we examined photorefractory Siberian hamsters and long-day housed control hamsters to examine whether this apparent insensitivity to melatonin is due to

A high incidence of abdominal pregnancy in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Eight animals with abdominal fetuses were found in a relatively small colony of Djungarian hamsters. All the fetuses were macerated. Some had remains of an amniotic sac with an umbilical attachment to a placenta adherent to the peritoneum, but others were without placental remains. Gross and histological examinations failed to reveal any ruptures of the uterus or oviducts. It was not possible to decide whether the abdominal pregnancies were primary or secondary.

Identification of immunohistochemical localization of irisin in the dwarf hamster (Phodopus roborovskii) tissues.

Irisin is mainly secreted by heart and skeletal muscle cells. It is an exercise-induced protein that converts white adipose tissue to brown. Increased irisin expression was lead to weight loss and improved glucose tolerance. We investigated irisin immunoreactivity in various tissues of the dwarf hamsters (Phodopus roborovskii). Tissues were processed, embedded in paraffin, sectioned at 5 μm and stained immunohistochemically for irisin. In the retina, irisin was found almost all layers, except outer nuclear layer. Also, irisin immunoreactivity was observed in the skin, cornea, striated muscle,

Unusual configurations of endoplasmic reticulum in pinealocytes of the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Ultrastructural observations of the pineal gland of Phodopus sungorus revealed different morphological forms of endoplasmic reticulum. These included crystalloids composed of 200A-wide tubules with an intervening space of 200A and connected at right angles to form a rectangular lattice; complexes of undulating 500A-wide tubules in an electron-dense cytoplasmic matrix; and stacks of flattened cisternae covered with granular electron-dense material. All these structures are continuous with the surrounding endoplasmic reticulum. Frequently one structure is directly connected with another. The exa

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (cutaneous asthenia) in a Campbell's dwarf hamster (Phodopus campbelli).

A case of cutaneous asthenia in a Campbell's dwarf hamster is described. The animal was found to have hyperextensible skin, glaucoma and lens dislocation. Histopathological examination revealed an irregular, haphazard arrangement of collagen fibres in the dermis. The animal underwent surgical reduction of the skin folds which provided only temporary relief.

Mitochondria-targeted antioxidant SkQ1 accelerates maturation in Campbell dwarf hamsters (Phodopus campbelli).

We tested two hypotheses. 1) SkQ1 positively affects postnatal development of hamsters in litters born to parents receiving long-term SkQ1 treatment. 2) SkQ1 accelerates maturation of juvenile females receiving the antioxidant treatment from 10 days of age. Parental pairs were kept in an outdoor vivarium under conditions close to natural. At the age of 25 days, juvenile males in litters born to parents treated daily with SkQ1 (50 nmol/kg per os) had higher epididymis mass. Both the size of a litter and SkQ1 affected epididymis mass in young males. Both the litter size and SkQ1 affected uterus

Mitochondrial proteomic adaptations to daily torpor in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Hibernation is an adaptive strategy that conserves energy in response to environmental challenges. While mitochondrial proteomic adaptations are well-documented in deep hibernators, the proteomic changes underlying daily torpor remain less clear. We investigated mitochondrial proteomic adaptations in the liver of a daily hibernator, the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus), across different hibernation phases. Hamsters were maintained under long-day (summer) or short-day photoperiods (winter), to induce torpor. Livers from summer, torpor, and interbout euthermia phases were analyzed by liqui

Spermatogenesis in the Roborovski hamster (Phodopus roborovskii) and the Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus).

BACKGROUND: Spermatogenesis is an elaborately organized and tightly regulated differentiation process. The spermatogenesis duration is stable within a certain species but highly variable between species of the same family. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the spermatogenesis duration of the Roborovski hamster was measured for the first time, and the spermatogenesis duration of the Chinese hamster was re-assessed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Stage classification and cycle length measurement were carried out by labeling the dividing cells with bromodeoxyuridine and an antibody-based chromogen as well as
