Enhancing Carrier Mobility by Remote Phonons.

Remote phonons from dielectrics are generally believed to degrade carrier mobility in adjacent semiconductors through Fröhlich scattering of polar optical phonons (POPs). Here, we show that remote phonons can instead enhance the mobility in van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. We developed a first-principles computational framework to evaluate these remote phonon effects. Applying our approach to a monolayer InSe semiconductor encapsulated by h-BN dielectric layers, we show that electron mobility is enhanced due to coupling between POPs in InSe and h-BN, which gives rise to a new collective p

Orbital Accumulation Induced by Chiral Phonons.

We theoretically investigate orbital accumulation driven by chiral phonons via orbital-dependent electron-lattice coupling. We derive a formula for the orbital accumulation induced by classical lattice dynamics or nonequilibrium phonons, emphasizing the rectified second-order response of the orbital moment to lattice displacement. We show that chiral phonons primarily couple to orbital quadrupole moments and that static orbital dipole accumulation can be generated at second order in the lattice displacement. Our Letter provides a useful method for generating orbital accumulation without using

Nonreciprocal Phonons in PT-Symmetric Antiferromagnets.

Phonon nonreciprocity, indicating different transport properties along opposite directions, has been observed in experiments under a magnetic field. We show that nonreciprocal acoustic phonons can also exist without a magnetic field or net magnetization. We identify crucial contributions in phenomenological elastic theory. In PT symmetric antiferromagnets, we find two terms, dubbed flexo viscosity and flexo torque, that induce phonon nonreciprocity. The microscopic origin of these terms is attributed to the derivatives of molecular Berry curvature, manifested as emergent nonlocal magnetic fiel

Real Topological Phonons in 3D Carbon Allotropes.

There has been a significant focus on real topological systems that enjoy space-time inversion symmetry and lack spin-orbit coupling. While the theoretical classification of the real topology has been established, more progress has yet to be made in the materials realization of real topological phononic states in 3D. To address this crucial issue, high-throughput computing is performed to inspect the real topology in the phonon spectrums of the 3D carbon allotropes. Among 1661 carbon allotropes listed in the Samara Carbon Allotrope Database (SACADA), 79 candidates host a phononic real Chern in

Low-temperature hyperbolic phonon polaritonics with suppressed phononic scattering.

Hyperbolic phonon polaritons (PhPs) enable unparalleled light manipulation due to their subwavelength confinement and anisotropic dispersions but suffer from substantial phononic scattering losses at room temperature. Recent cryogenic nanoimaging has demonstrated extended hyperbolic PhP propagation at low temperatures; however, the fundamental dissipation mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we unveil the intrinsic loss channels and scattering rates of hyperbolic PhPs in van der Waals alpha-molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) and bulk yttrium orthovanadate (YVO4) through integrated structural, vibrationa

Broadband Excitation of Antiferromagnetic Dynamics by Acoustic Phonons.

Excitation of antiferromagnetic dynamics is at the core of ultrafast spintronics. Coherent excitation of antiferromagnetic magnons is typically monochromatic, confined at dispersion intersections between antiferromagnetic magnons and the excitation source. Broadband excitation can be enabled by introducing electron spins in an incoherent manner, albeit accompanied by high energy consumption from Joule heating. Here, we demonstrate a broadband excitation of antiferromagnetic dynamics of 2D antiferromagnet CrSBr without Joule heating, by Rayleigh-type surface acoustic wave (R-SAW). Incoherent ma

Surface plasmons-phonons for mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging.

Surface plasmons have proven their ability to boost the sensitivity of mid-infrared hyperspectral imaging by enhancing light-matter interactions. Surface phonons, a counterpart technology to plasmons, present unclear contributions to hyperspectral imaging. Here, we investigate this by developing a plasmon-phonon hyperspectral imaging system that uses asymmetric cross-shaped nanoantennas composed of stacked plasmon-phonon materials. The phonon modes within this system, controlled by light polarization, capture molecular refractive index intensity and lineshape features, distinct from those obse

Negative Refraction of Terahertz Phonons via Interfacial Momentum Compensation.

Negative refraction provides a route to steer and focus wave energy flow, but it remains difficult to realize for coherent terahertz phonons. The difficulty stems from conventional dispersion-based mechanisms, which require strongly anisotropic or negative-curvature dispersions, while the long-wavelength acoustic phonons most favorable for coherent transport are nearly isotropic. Here, we overcome this limitation by introducing a momentum compensation mechanism mediated by discrete translational symmetry. Discrete translational symmetry parallel to the interface supplies a compensating tangent

Phonons Reflect Dynamic Spin-State Order in LaCoO_{3}.

We investigate lattice dynamics in LaCoO_{3} using inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering over T=2-650  K, spanning the spin-state crossover at T_{1}≈100  K and the insulator-metal transition at T_{2}≈550  K. Comparison with quasiharmonic ab initio lattice-dynamical calculations helps reveal anomalous softening of a≈10-meV oxygen phonon, confined to the temperature interval T_{1}≤T≤T_{2} and localized in momentum space at q_{SSO}=(½,½,½)_{c}. This wave vector is characteristic of the spin-state-ordering pattern originally proposed by Goodenough [An interpretation of the magnetic properties of

Controlling Radiative Phonons in the van der Waals Ferroelectric NbOI2.

The optical properties of quantum systems are fundamentally governed by their electromagnetic environment through the local density of optical states (LDOS), enabling powerful control over atomic, excitonic, and electronic transitions. However, the radiative properties of phonons have remained largely unexplored within this framework of environmental engineering. Here we demonstrate LDOS control of terahertz (THz) phonon emission in the van der Waals ferroelectric NbOI2 using a simple mirror geometry. By modifying the photonic environment, we achieve pronounced and reversible tuning of the pho

Dephasing by optical phonons in GaN defect single-photon emitters.

Single-photon defect emitters (SPEs), especially those with magnetically and optically addressable spin states, in technologically mature wide bandgap semiconductors are attractive for realizing integrated platforms for quantum applications. Broadening of the zero phonon line (ZPL) caused by dephasing in solid state SPEs limits the indistinguishability of the emitted photons. Dephasing also limits the use of defect states in quantum information processing, sensing, and metrology. In most defect emitters, such as those in SiC and diamond, interaction with low-energy acoustic phonons determines

Resonant thermal Hall effect of phonons coupled to dynamical defects.

We present computations of the thermal Hall coefficient of phonons scattering off a defect with multiple energy levels. Using a microscopic formulation based on the Kubo formula, we find that the leading contribution perturbative in the phonon-defect coupling is proportional to the phonon lifetime and has a "side-jump" interpretation. Consequently, the thermal Hall angle is independent of the phonon lifetime. The contribution to the thermal Hall coefficient is at resonance when the phonon energy equals a defect-level spacing. Our results are obtained for three different defect models, which ap

Topological Slot in Phononic Crystals.

The hallmark of Chern insulators is the unidirectional propagation of chiral edge states, which are immune to imperfections due to bulk topological protection. However, this robustness presents a fundamental challenge in pausing or spatially confining these information carriers on demand. Here, we propose a topological slot that enables spatial trapping and controlled release of these chiral modes. The trapping occurs at the interface between two topological domains that share the same Chern number but exhibit a polarization mismatch. We implement the topological slot in phononic crystals and

Strong electron-phonon interaction retarding phonon transport in superconducting hydrogen sulfide at high pressures.

Realistic representation of quantum interactions between electrons and phonons is crucial to uncovering the fundamental origin of superconductivity and predicting superconductors with a high transition temperature (Tc). We study the influence of the intrinsic electron-phonon interaction (EPI) on the phonon transport of superconducting hydrogen sulfide at high pressures, and its variation under an external magnetic field using all-electron first-principles calculations. High pressure greatly shortens interatomic distances, modifies the Fermi surface with sharp variation around sulfide atoms and

Unveiling Robust Spin-Phonon Coupling and Magnetic-Order-Driven Phonon Softening in Honeycomb Mn3NiTa2O9.

Observation and interpretation of the temperature dependence of the prominent Raman modes of Mn3NiTa2O9(MNTO) from T = 8 K to 300 K is reported and compared with those reported in the isostructural Mn4Ta2O9(MTO) with honeycomb lattice and trigonal symmetry. The systematic blue shift of all Raman modes of MNTO relative to those in MTO is interpreted to result from the reduced lattice parameters of MNTO due to Ni substitution. The smaller magnetic moment of Ni2+relative to that of Mn2+is the likely source of a few % reduction in the observed magnetic transitions (TN∼ 97 K and TS∼ 46 K) of MNTO.

Surface Phonon-Mediated Molecular Diffusion via Vibration-Phonon Coupling at the Single-Molecule Level.

Understanding the underlying mechanisms that induce molecular motion on solid surfaces is essential for elucidating elementary surface processes such as molecular diffusion and reactions. To date, several excitation pathways using electrons, heat, and light have been shown to induce the vibrational excitation of molecular adsorbates on surfaces. However, the contribution of substrate phonons to the behaviors of adsorbates has been underexplored despite its ubiquitous importance in various chemical processes. Here, we present evidence that surface phonons can actively induce molecular diffusion

Surface phonons in topological insulator Bi2Te3 investigated by Brillouin light scattering.

High resolution Brillouin spectroscopy was used for the first time to study the dispersion and anisotropy of surface phonons in the single crystal of topological insulator Bi2Te3. Two surface acoustic waves have been observed, which distinguishes this material from other metals or nontransparent materials. The modes were assigned as Rayleigh waves. The obtained results were then simulated by Finite Element Method. The layered structure of the unit cell proposed in simulation reproduced quite well experimental results of the modes dispersion and anisotropy.

Finite-momentum excitons and the role of electron-phonon couplings in the electronic and phonon transport properties of boron arsenide.

The emerging semiconductor boron arsenide (BAs) with high thermal conductivity has attracted much attention recently, due to its promising application to overcome the bottleneck of high-density heat generated in power electronics and optoelectronic devices. In this work, based on first-principles calculations, we find that cubic BAs possesses high intrinsic electron/hole mobilities and the ionized impurity scattering plays a more important role in carrier scattering, compared with other scattering processes. The mobilities can be significantly enhanced by 14.9% and 76.2% for electrons and hole

Spin valley dynamics of phonons entangled with circularly polarized light in WSe2.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have generated considerable interest in optoelectronics and valence-band electronics due to their unique electronic structures. In this paper, we incorporate the spin-orbit coupling effects and use the left-handed circularly polarized excitation of K-valley electrons as an example to investigate the excited-state dynamics of the coupling between the optical field and phonons in WSe2. We reveal that left-handed light selectively excites K-valley electrons, while right-handed light selectively excites K'-valley electrons, inducing periodic Rabi o

Phononic Casimir Effect in Planar Materials.

The phononic Casimir effect between planar objects is investigated by deriving a formalism from the quantum partition function of the system following multiscattering approach. This fluctuation-induced coupling is mediated by phonons modeled as an effective elastic medium. We find that excitations with three types of polarizations arise from the resolved boundary conditions, however the coupling is dominated by only one of these degrees of freedom due to exponential suppression effects in the other two. The obtained scaling laws and dependence on materials properties and temperature suggest ef
