Phoradendron mucronatum and P. microphyllum are plants that found in tropical and subtropical areas, used in traditional medicine and popularly known as mistle-thrush. The aim of this study was to identify the chemical constituents of different leaf extracts from P. mucronatum and P. microphyllum and assess cytotoxic activity against strains from a human tumour cells. Extracts obtained with hexane, dichloromethane, chloroform and ethyl acetate from the leaves were analysed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and the cytotoxicity was assessed by the MTT method (bromide

The present study aimed to investigate the reciprocal effects of Phoradendron perrottetii (mistletoe) and T. guianensis (host plant) regarding their polyphenol composition. Taking into account that tannins are important molecules in plant defense and their biosynthesis tends to be enhanced when a species is exposed to stress, we address the following questions: (1) Are the tannins found in our model species important in the interaction between host and mistletoe? (2) Does the presence of mistletoe induce changes in the content of tannins and other polyphenols in the host plant? (3) Do we find

Current antineoplastic agents present multiple disadvantages, driving an ongoing search for new and better compounds. Four lupane-type triterpenes, 3α,24-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (1), 3α,23-dihydroxy-30-oxo-lup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (2), 3α,23-O-isopropylidenyl-3α,23-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (3), and 3α,23-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (4), previously isolated from Phoradendron wattii, were evaluated on two cell lines of chronic (K562) and acute (HL60) myeloid leukemia. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 decreased cell viability and inhibit proliferation, mainly in K562, and exhibi

Dendrophthora is a genus of stem-parasitic plants that are commonly known as mistletoes. It exhibits a notable morphological similarity to Phoradendron, which makes differentiation difficult. Traditionally, the two genera are grouped within the tribe Phoradendreae. Molecular analyses have called into question the monophyly of each genus but confirm the monophyly of Phoradendreae. The unique distinction between genera is the number of locules in the anther. However, this feature introduces uncertainties when defining the two genera. Therefore, this study examines the development and floral morp

Extracts from aerial parts of Prosopis ruscifolia, Bidens pilosa, Cercidium praecox and Phoradendron liga were assayed against toxigenic Aspergillus species. They were obtained by sequential extraction of the aerial parts with hexane (fHex), dichloromethane (fDCM), ethyl acetate (fEtOAc) and methanol (fMeOH). The fMeOH from P. ruscifolia showed the highest antifungal spectrum (MIC = 750-1500 µg mL-1; MID = 50-200 µg; DI = 1.7-3.0 mm). Indolizidine alkaloids (juliflorine and juliprosine) and tryptamine were identified with strong (MIC = 188 µg mL-1) and moderate antifungal activities (MIC = 750

To assess the potential toxicity of mistletoe ingestion, data were collected on 14 cases of ingestion of one to three berries or one or two leaves of American mistletoe (Phoradendron sp) from 1982 to 1985. Eleven patients ingested berries and three ingested leaves; none became symptomatic. Nine patients were observed at home without intervention except poison center telephone follow-up. Five had induced emesis, including two who were referred to emergency departments for evaluation, where no findings other than ipecac-induced vomiting were noted. Also reviewed were data on a total of 318 cases

Medicinal plants represent promising sources for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders because of their abundance in bioactive compounds with therapeutic properties. Throughout history, various plant species have been used to alleviate digestive ailments, and studies have revealed the presence of metabolites with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic, antidiarrheal, antioxidant, and anticancer activities. The secondary metabolites responsible for these properties include alkaloids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds, with the latter, particularly flavonoids, being th

Current treatments against leukemia present several limitations, prompting the search for new therapeutic agents, particularly those derived from natural products. In this context, structural modifications were performed on the triterpene 3α,24-dihydroxylup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (T1), isolated from Phoradendron wattii. Among the five derivatives obtained, 3α,24-dihydroxy-30-oxolup-20(29)-en-28-oic acid (T1c) exhibited the highest activity, with an IC50 value of 12.90 ± 0.1 µM against THP-1 cells. T1c significantly reduced cell viability in both acute lymphoblastic leukemia (CCRF-CEM, REH, JURK

Medicinal plants are widely used in traditional medicine because of their bioactive compounds with therapeutic potential. The semidesert Mexican species Flourensia cernua, Artemisia ludoviciana, and Phoradendron californicum have been traditionally employed as infusions for gastrointestinal disorders. In this study, chemical composition, infusion extraction, phytochemical profiling, antioxidant capacity, and antiparasitic and antibacterial activity were evaluated. The extracts were characterized via HPLC-MS, encapsulated in agar-agar beads, and subjected to in vitro simulated digestion. A. lud

Morolic (1) and moronic (2) acids are the main constituents of acetonic extract from Phoradendron reichenbachianum (Loranthaceae), a medicinal plant used in Mexico for the treatment of diabetes. The aim of the current study was to establish the sub-acute antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic effects of compounds 1 and 2 over non insulin-dependent diabetic rat model. Also, to determine the antihyperglycemic action on normoglycemic rats by oral glucose tolerance test. Daily-administered morolic (1) and moronic (2) acids (50 mg/kg) significantly lowered the blood glucose levels at 60% since first d
