Photobacterium damsela Necrotizing Fasciitis of the Arm.

Photobacterium damsela is a gram-negative bacterium that is known to cause infection, most commonly in marine animals and rarely in humans. Photobacterium damsela typically results in skin and soft tissue infections in humans and has been associated with necrotizing fasciitis in several case reports. After an initially benign presentation, P damsela necrotizing fasciitis often progresses rapidly to multiorgan failure and death. Here, we present a fatal case of P damsela necrotizing fasciitis after a minor cut while scaling a fish with a discussion of current literature and treatment strategies

Update on bacterial vaccines: Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida is the causative agent of pasteurellosis in wild and farmed marine fish worldwide. Although serologically homogeneous, recent molecular advances have led to the discovery of distinct genetic clades, depending on geographical origin. Further details of the strategies for host colonisation have arisen including information on the role of capsule, susceptibility to oxidative stress, confirmation of intracellular survival in host epithelial cells, and induced apoptosis of host macrophages. This improved understanding has given rise to new ideas and advances

Two distinct Photobacterium populations thrive in ancient Mediterranean sapropels.

Eastern Mediterranean sediments are characterized by the periodic occurrence of conspicuous, organic matter-rich sapropel layers. Phylogenetic analysis of a large culture collection isolated from these sediments revealed that about one third of the isolates belonged to the genus Photobacterium. In the present study, 22 of these strains were examined with respect to their phylogenetic and metabolic diversity. The strains belonged to two distinct Photobacterium populations (Mediterranean cluster I and II). Strains of cluster I were isolated almost exclusively from organic-rich sapropel layers an

AIMS: Several virulence factors of three new Photobacterium species: Photobacterium toruni, Photobacterium malacitanum and Photobacterium andalusiense associated with diseases of cultured redbanded seabream (Pagrus auriga) were studied. The exoenzymatic activities, adherence and cytotoxic capabilities, and iron-uptake mechanisms were determined both in bacterial extracellular products (ECP) and whole bacterial cells. The histopathology damages provoked on redbanded seabream by the ECP was also studied. METHODS AND RESULTS: The highest exoenzymatic activities of the ECP were alkaline- and acid

Phenotypic characterization of the marine pathogen Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida.

The taxonomic position of Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida, the causative agent of fish pasteurellosis, is controversial as this organism has also been described as 'Pasteurella piscicida'. To clarify the taxonomic position of the pathogen, a total of 113 P. damselae subsp. piscicida strains and 20 P. damselae subsp. damselae strains, isolated from different geographical areas and from the main affected fish species, were analysed using 129 morphological and biochemical tests, including the commercial API 20E and API CH50 test systems. For comparison, the type strains of other Photobac

Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Photobacterium damselae: The First Case in Portugal.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection with a high mortality rate and therefore requires emergent surgical treatment. Several microorganisms can cause this infection, Photobacterium damselae being one of them, with only eight cases previously published in the literature. We report the first ever case of necrotizing fasciitis, caused by this microorganism, in Portugal. In this case report the patient survived after several debridement procedures and reconstruction of the upper limb with acellular dermal matrix and skin graft. A brief review of the Photobacterium damselae soft t

Shewanella and Photobacterium spp. in oysters and seawater from the Delaware Bay.

Shewanella algae, S. putrefaciens, and Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae are indigenous marine bacteria and human pathogens causing cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, abscesses, septicemia, and death. Infections are rare and are most often associated with the immunocompromised host. A study was performed on the microbiological flora of oysters and seawater from commercial oyster harvesting sites in the Delaware Bay, New Jersey. From 276 water and shellfish samples tested, 1,421 bacterial isolates were picked for biochemical identification and 170 (12.0%) of the isolates were presumptivel

Regulation and properties of the glutamine synthetase purified from Photobacterium phosphoreum.

Glutamine synthetase from a marine enterobacterium, Photobacterium phosphoreum, was purified to homogeneity from cells grown in glycerol-yeast extract medium. The purified enzyme had a molecular weight of approximately 670,000 and a subunit size of 56,000, i.e. larger than that of the enzyme from E. coli. Regulation of the glutamine synthetase activity by adenylylation/deadenylylation was demonstrated on snake venom phosphodiesterase treatment. The state of adenylylation appeared to influence both the biosynthetic and gamma-glutamyltransferase activities of P. phosphoreum glutamine synthetase

Specificity Across Scales: Insights From the Siphamia-Photobacterium mandapamensis Symbiosis.

Specificity, the selective partnership between a host and particular microbial taxa, is a fundamental feature of microbial symbioses, yet the mechanisms that generate and maintain specificity can be difficult to disentangle across the evolutionary, ecological and molecular scales at which they operate. Binary symbioses, in which a single host and microbial species interact, offer powerful systems for investigating these mechanisms across biological scales. Here, current knowledge of the symbiosis between siphonfish in the genus Siphamia and their bioluminescent symbiont, Photobacterium mandapa

Successfully Treated Upper-Extremity Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Photobacterium damselae.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a soft-tissue infection associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The bacteria most associated with necrotizing fasciitis include Streptococcus pyogenes (group A), Clostridium species, Streptococcus species, and Staphylococcus species. Photobacterium damselae (P. damselae), formerly known as Vibrio damselae, is a halophilic, gram-negative bacillus known to infect marine organisms in warm coastal waters. Necrotizing fasciitis associated with P. damselae has been reported to have higher rates of serious complications and mortality because of an atypical presen

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae bacteraemia in a patient with liver cirrhosis.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae is a family of Vibrionaceae and exists in the marine environment. The organism rarely causes soft-tissue infection in humans; moreover, most of the infected individuals have a history of fishing or exposure to brackish water. We experienced the case of a 63-year-old patient with a history of liver cirrhosis (Child-Pugh class B) who presented with a fever and swelling of the left leg with pain. His symptoms developed after fishing and eating raw fish with exposure of brackish water. He was diagnosed with cellulitis, and Photobacterium damselae spp. damsel

Biochemical characterization of a phospholipase A2 from Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (Phdp) is the causative agent of fish photobacteriosis (pasteurellosis) in cultured cobia (Rachycentron canadum) in Taiwan. A component was purified from the extracellular products (ECP) of the bacterium strain 9205 by fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and identified as a phospholipase. An N-terminal sequence of 10 amino acid residues, QDQPNLDPGK, was determined by mass spectroscopy (MS) and found to be identical with that of another Phdp phospholipase (GenBank accession no. BAB85814) at positions 21 to 30. The corresponding gene sequence of the

Direct identification of Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida by PCR-RFLP analysis.

Fish pasteurellosis is an infectious disease that affects several teleost species living in temperate marine waters. The pathogen responsible, Photobacterium damselae subspecies piscicida, shows high genetic similarity with P. damselae subsp. damselae, making subspecies discrimination extremely laborious. Here we report for the first time a PCR-RFLP method for the identification of P. damselae subsp. piscicida without prior isolation in pure culture. Genomic sequence information was obtained through cloning and sequencing of RAPD products. Two P. damselae-specific primer pairs were developed a

Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida: an integrated view of a bacterial fish pathogen.

Pasteurellosis, or pseudotuberculosis, is a bacterial septicaemia caused by the halophilic bacterium Photobacterium damselae subsp. piscicida (formerly Pasteurella piscicida). Although this disease was first described in wild populations of white perch and striped bass, currently the natural hosts of the pathogen are a wide variety of marine fish. The disease has great economic impact both in Japan, where it affects mainly yellowtail cultures, and in the Mediterranean area, due to the losses it causes in seabream and seabass farms. This microorganism serves as a perfect model to study a bacter

Changes in the in vivo luminescence, respiratory activities, contents of cytochromes, extractable luciferase and NAD(P)H-FMN reductase during growth of the wild (bright) strain of Photobacterium phosphoreum and its dim mutant were determined. The intensity of the in vivo luminescence per cell increased 10 times in the wild strain and 750 times in the dim strain during logarithmic growth, while the contents of luciferase and NAD(P)H-FMN reductase remained almost constant. It is suggested that a characteristic change in the mode of competition of the luminescence reaction system with another ele

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae, a bacterium pathogenic for marine animals and humans.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae (formerly Vibrio damsela) is a pathogen of a variety of marine animals including fish, crustaceans, molluscs, and cetaceans. In humans, it can cause opportunistic infections that may evolve into necrotizing fasciitis with fatal outcome. Although the genetic basis of virulence in this bacterium is not completely elucidated, recent findings demonstrate that the phospholipase-D Dly (damselysin) and the pore-forming toxins HlyApl and HlyAch play a main role in virulence for homeotherms and poikilotherms. The acquisition of the virulence plasmid pPHDD1 that e
