Antireflective and Superhydrophobic Coating for Boosting Cyanobacterial Photobioreactor Performance.

Biofouling poses a notorious challenge during photosynthetic microorganism cultivation in photobioreactors (PBRs) by hindering light penetration, degrading the cultivation environment and eventually diminishing bioproductivity. To solve this problem, we developed a superhydrophobic SiO2 coating with antireflective properties using sol-gel technology. The coating is cost-effective due to its simple, fluorine-free, and heat-free fabrication process, showing excellent performance in both preventing cyanobacterial adhesion and enhancing light transmission. Compared to uncoated substrates, the tran

A screening model to predict microalgae biomass growth in photobioreactors and raceway ponds.

A microalgae biomass growth model was developed for screening novel strains for their potential to exhibit high biomass productivities under nutrient-replete conditions in photobioreactors or outdoor ponds. Growth is modeled by first estimating the light attenuation by biomass according to Beer-Lambert's Law, and then calculating the specific growth rate in discretized culture volume slices that receive declining light intensities due to attenuation. The model uses only two physical and two species-specific biological input parameters, all of which are relatively easy to determine: incident li

Secretion-based production of prolyl-hydroxylated human type III collagen in scalable Physcomitrella photobioreactors.

Scalable moss bioreactors enable the production of high-quality recombinant prolyl-hydroxylated human collagen without heterologous P4H expression, offering a sustainable and vegan alternative to conventional collagens derived from animals. Collagens are structural proteins of the extracellular matrix essential for skin elasticity and integrity. They are widely used in dietary supplements and cosmetics. Conventional collagens of animal origin raise concerns regarding ethics, safety, and sustainability. As a vegan alternative, we report on the production of a 30 kDa prolyl-hydroxylated human co

Algal-bacterial bioremediation of cyanide-containing wastewater in a continuous stirred photobioreactor.

This study reports the isolation and characterization of highly resistant bacterial and microalgal strains from an Egyptian wastewater treatment station to cyanide-containing compounds. The bacterial strain was identified as Bacillus licheniformis by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The isolate removed up to 1 g L-1 potassium cyanide, 3 g L-1 benzonitrile, and 1 g L-1 sodium salicylate when incubated as 10% v/v in MSM at 30 ℃. However, it failed to degrade potassium thiocyanate at all tested concentrations. The microalgal isolate was identified by electron microscopy as a strain of Chlorella spp.. Al

Long-lasting biofouling formation on transparent fouling-release coatings for the construction of efficient closed photobioreactors.

In order to build an efficient closed-photobioreactor (PBR) in which biofouling formation is avoided, a non-toxic coating with high transparency is required, which can be applied to the interior surface of the PBR walls. Nowadays, amphiphilic copolymers are being used to inhibit microorganism adhesion, so poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based coatings mixed with poly(ethylene glycol)-based copolymers could be a good option. The 7 poly(dimethylsiloxane)-based coatings tested in this work contained 4% w/w of poly(ethylene glycol)-based copolymers. All were a good alternative to glass because they present

Biofixation of CO2 from synthetic combustion gas using cultivated microalgae in three-stage serial tubular photobioreactors.

Coal is the most abundant of the fossil fuels, with reserves estimated at 102 billions of tons. The feasibility of using coal as a fuel depends upon reducing emissions of gas when it is burnt, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SO(x)), and nitrogen oxides (NO(x)). The removal of CO2 with microalgae may be one of the most efficient ways of reducing this gas, without the need for radical changes in the world's energy supply and production methods. Spirulina sp. LEB-18 and Scenedesmus obliquus LEB-22 were cultivated in serial tubular photobioreactors, with the aim of measuring the poten

Performance and feasibility analysis of an integrated airlift microalgae photobioreactor for cultivation and pre-harvesting.

Microalgae technology is highly attractive in the realm of wastewater treatment and CO2 removal. However, during the cultivation of microalgae, the phenomenon of light attenuation intensifies with the increasing cell concentration, resulting in a decrement in microalgal growth rate. To maintain high light transmittance and growth rate of microalgae, this study introduces a two-step pre-harvesting process involving flocculation and filtration within an airlift photobioreactor. In this way, the growth performance of microalgae was bolstered by an improvement in light availability, which was incr

Starch Production in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii through Supraoptimal Temperature in a Pilot-Scale Photobioreactor.

An increase in temperature can have a profound effect on the cell cycle and cell division in green algae, whereas growth and the synthesis of energy storage compounds are less influenced. In Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, laboratory experiments have shown that exposure to a supraoptimal temperature (39 °C) causes a complete block of nuclear and cellular division accompanied by an increased accumulation of starch. In this work we explore the potential of supraoptimal temperature as a method to promote starch production in C. reinhardtii in a pilot-scale photobioreactor. The method was successfully

The Influence of Forward Osmosis Module Configuration on Nutrients Removal and Microalgae Harvesting in Osmotic Photobioreactor.

Microalgae have attracted great interest recently due to their potential for nutrients removal from wastewater, renewable biodiesel production and bioactive compounds extraction. However, one major challenge in microalgal bioremediation and the algal biofuel process is the high energy cost of separating microalgae from water. Our previous studies demonstrated that forward osmosis (FO) is a promising technology for microalgae harvesting and dewatering due to its low energy consumption and easy fouling control. In the present study, two FO module configurations (side-stream and submerged) were i

Performance comparison of two photobioreactors configurations (open and closed to the atmosphere) treating anaerobically degraded swine slurry.

The purpose of the study was comparison of two configurations of photobioreactors an open-type photobioreactor open to atmosphere and a tubular type photobioreactor closed to the atmosphere. Organic matter was fairly removed under both configurations at 50-60% and biomass carbon content on dry weight basis accounted for 45%. Both configurations were able to completely exhaust ammonium, however different mechanism removals were responsible for the different influent loads applied. In terms of nitrogen recovery by biomass assimilation, the open configuration ranged 38-47% whereas the closed type
