High precision animal stereotaxis with 3D polychromic photogrammetry.

Stereotaxic brain surgery is a foundational neurosurgical technique used to deliver chemical, pharmacological, or genetic material to specific brain regions, or to precisely implant electrodes and stimulators. Accurate targeting depends on reliable identification of skull landmarks, particularly bregma and lambda. Here we present a photogrammetry-based automated small animal stereotaxic platform that uses a single, freely handheld camera, such as a standard smartphone, to generate high-resolution, polychromatic 3D skull reconstructions. Because photogrammetry requires no fixed overhead hardwar

Evaluating a Photogrammetry-Based Video for Undergraduate Anatomy Education.

Modern anatomy education has benefitted from the development of a wide range of digital 3D resources in the past decades, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has sparked an additional demand for high-quality online learning resources. Photogrammetry provides a low-cost technique for departments to create their own photo-realistic 3D models of cadaveric specimens. However, to ensure accessibility, the design of the resulting learning resources should be carefully considered. We aimed to address this by creating a video based on a photogrammetry model of a cadaveric human lung. Students eval

Accuracy of photogrammetry for detecting adolescent idiopathic scoliosis progression.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard method of monitoring the evolution of scoliosis has been serial standing, posteroanterior, full-length spine radiographs with curvature measurements using the Cobb method. However, over the course of follow-up, patients can receive high radiation doses. Various studies have shown that repeated exposure to radiation in children and adolescents can be harmful to their health. PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy of photogrammetry in evaluating the progression of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in comparison with radiography. STUDY DESIGN: Diagnostic study. PATIENT

Clinical accuracy of complete arch implant scans recorded by using a noncalibrated splinting technique, intraoral photogrammetry, and extraoral photogrammetry with snap-on markers.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The selection of an implant scanning technique for recording implant positions is a critical element that impacts the implant-prosthodontic discrepancy. However, clinical studies that have analyzed the accuracy of the different implant scanning techniques are lacking. Additionally, the impact of the retention system of the markers on the accuracy of extraoral photogrammetry (PG) devices is unknown. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to compare the accuracy of complete arch implant scans captured by using intraoral and extraoral PG devices and a noncalibrated

Optimizing Photogrammetry Parameters for 3D Reconstruction of Fresh Brain Specimens.

Photogrammetry has become an essential tool in medical and research fields for generating high-fidelity 3D models from 2D images. However, optimizing the imaging and processing parameters remains a challenge, particularly for fresh brain specimens, where repeated imaging is not feasible. This study systematically evaluates the impact of various Metashape alignment settings on 3D reconstruction outcomes, analyzing 12,600 configuration combinations and 63,000 alignments. Our results suggest that the optimal imaging setup consists of four photo sets: two captured at anatomical position (level wit

Recovery via SfM photogrammetry of latent footprint impressions in carpet.

Impression evidence retained in carpet is usually recovered, if at all, in two dimensions via a vertical photograph. Here, we show that recovery is also possible via SfM photogrammetry and this gives good quality results that allow digital measurements both in the x-y plane and by depth (z-axis). This study focuses on recovery from polypropylene carpets which are widespread due to their resistance to wear and low cost. We show how traces can be recovered using both SfM photogrammetry and conventional photography with illumination provided via a crime scene light source. Experiments show that t

Facial paralysis in newborns can leave functional sequelae. Determining the evolution and amount of functional losses requires consistent evaluation methods that measure, quantitatively, the evolution of clinical functionality. This paper reports an innovative method of facial assessment for the case of a child 28 days of age with unilateral facial paralysis. The child had difficulty breast feeding, and quickly responded to the physical therapy treatment.
