Intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are photoreceptors of the mammalian eye that drive pupillary responses, synchronization of circadian rhythms, and other reflexive responses to daylight. Melanopsin is the ipRGC photopigment, but the signaling cascade through which this invertebrate-like opsin triggers the photocurrent in these cells is unknown. Here, using patch-clamp recordings from dissociated ipRGCs in culture, we show that a membrane-associated phosphoinositide cascade lies at the heart of the ipRGC phototransduction mechanism, similar to the cascade in rhabdomer

Many photoreceptor cells in invertebrates have a dual-peak spectral sensitivity. Evidence is presented that in fly photoreceptors the ultraviolet peak is due to a photostable pigment that absorbs light quanta and transfers the energy to the blue-absorbing visual pigment.

Most animals detect ambient light using their cephalic eyes as photosensory organs. However, some animals have different types of photosensors in other parts of their body. The marine gastropod Peronia verruculata possesses several types of extraocular photosensors such as dorsal eyes, dermal photoreceptors and brain photosensory neurons. In the present study, we identified a pair of follicle-shaped structures expressing Gq-rhodopsin in the lateral lobe of the brain in P. verruculata. This structure had numerous microvilli and a few cilia in its interior, which is reminiscent of the follicle g

Extensive analysis of the flower-visiting behavior of a butterfly, Papilio xuthus, has indicated complex interaction between chromatic, achromatic, and motion cues. Their eyes are spectrally rich with six classes of photoreceptors, respectively sensitive in the ultraviolet, violet, blue, green, red, and broad-band wavelength regions. Here, we studied the anatomy and physiology of photoreceptors and second-order neurons of P. xuthus, focusing on their spectral sensitivities and projection terminals to address where the early visual integration takes place. We thus found the ultraviolet, violet,

To sense light, animals often utilize mechanisms that rely on visual pigments composed of opsin and retinal. The photon-induced isomerization of 11-cis-retinal to the all-trans configuration triggers phototransduction cascades, resulting in a change in the membrane potential of the photoreceptor. In mollusks, the most abundant opsin in the eye is Gq-coupled rhodopsin (Gq-rhodopsin). The Gq-rhodopsin-based visual pigment is bistable, with the regeneration of 11-cis-retinal occurring in a light-dependent manner without leaving the opsin moiety. 11-cis-retinal is also regenerated by the action of

Light and electron microscopic findings are presented for the first time on a species of amphipod whale louse, Cyamus ceti, with reference to the paired photoreceptor structures of the head. Whale lice are crustacean ectoparasites of large, slow moving whales. Twenty-two known species parasitize mainly baleens but also toothed whales. Samples were collected from Alaskan bowhead whales during an Eskimo hunt. The photoreceptors, or compound eyes, were sessile and located on the dorsal cephalon. Each photoreceptor contained approximately 50 visual ommatidial units. The general organization was si

The short-term influence of visual experience was studied in the first-order tetrad synapses of the first optic neuropil, or lamina, underlying the compound eye in the housefly (Musca domestica). We report the effects of single light reversals, in which flies reared in constant darkness were exposed to light or those in constant light were exposed to darkness, on this defined population of synapses. The synaptic population was characterized by quantitative electron microscopic methods using three parameters: (i) the number of synaptic contacts per photoreceptor terminal; (ii) the size of these

Visual abilities of the honey bee have been studied for more than 100 years, recently revealing unexpectedly sophisticated cognitive skills rivalling those of vertebrates. However, the physiological limits of the honey bee eye have been largely unaddressed and only studied in an unnatural, dark state. Using a bright display and intracellular recordings, we here systematically investigated the angular sensitivity across the light adapted eye of honey bee foragers. Angular sensitivity is a measure of photoreceptor receptive field size and thus small values indicate higher visual acuity. Our reco

In the visual systems of insects, different types of photoreceptors contribute to specialized visual channels that mediate distinct functions and behaviors. Large compound eyes of Periplaneta americana contain photoreceptors of two spectral classes, broadband green-sensitive photoreceptors and narrow-band UV-sensitive photoreceptors. Here, we investigated how visual stimulation by UV and green light affects locomotor, resting, and grooming behaviors in P. americana under conditions when light avoidance is not possible. We show that green but not UV light stimulates locomotor activity, inducing

The effects of natural methylmercury compounds on regeneration of photoreceptor organs were studied in three freshwater planarians: Polycelis tenuis, Dugesia lugubris, and D. tigrina. Accumulation of methyl mercury in the planarian body suppressed regeneration of P. tenuis with numerous photoreceptor organs to a greater extent than in two other planarians that have only two eyes. High methyl mercury concentrations inhibited the restoration of photoreceptor organs in asexual and sexual D. tigrina races.

The visual pigments in the rods do not have a special absorption that gives them maximal sensitivity. The visual pigments of "deep sea" fish are an exception for these do match the environmental light to give maximum sensitivity. At the low light intensities at which the rods operate, it is the number of photons that go to make up each element of the image that limits the ability of the eye to discriminate detail and contrast. Chemically induced isomerisation of the visual pigment molecule may cause spurious visual signals that limit the ability of the eye to detect contrasts in very dim light

When sexually mature, the marine annelid Platynereis dumerilii emerges at night from its tube and swims to the surface in search of a mate. Developing from the immature atoke to the mature epitoke, each of its four eyes doubles in diameter, but it is unclear what visual capacity these eyes have and which visual tasks they support. We assessed this question by comparing the anatomy and physiology of atoke and epitoke eyes. Platynereis dumerilii has four cephalic eyes in anterior and posterior pairs, which all have an adjustable pupil with similar dynamics. As the eyes grow, photoreceptors are a

The high-pressure freezing (HPF) technique is known to cryofix water-containing materials with little ice-crystal formation in deep depths compared with other freezing techniques. In this study, HPF for anesthetized living Drosophila was performed by placing them directly on the carrier of the HPF unit and exposing them to light. Frozen Drosophila were freeze substituted, and their compound eyes were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The ultrastructures of ommatidia composed of photoreceptor cells were well preserved. The location of the cytoplasmic organelles inside the photorecep

Blowfly motion vision is tuned not simply to represent optic flow, but to support rapid flight control. A recent study shows that blowfly visual neurons preferentially encode the self-motion signals most useful for stabilisation, revealing an embodied principle of sensory coding.

Many visual animals exploit spectral information for seeking food and mates, for identifying preys and predators, and for navigation. Animals use chromatic information in two ways. "True color vision," the ability to discriminate visual stimuli on the basis of their spectral content independent of brightness, is thought to play an important role in object identification. In contrast, "wavelength-specific behavior," which is strongly dependent on brightness, often associates with foraging, navigation, and other species-specific needs. Among animals capable of chromatic vision, insects, with the

Photoreception and vision are fundamental aspects of animal sensory biology and ecology, but important gaps remain in our understanding of these processes in many species. The colour-changing brittle star Ophiocoma wendtii is iconic in vision research, speculatively possessing a unique whole-body visual system that incorporates information from nerve bundles underlying thousands of crystalline 'microlenses'. The hypothesis that these might form a sophisticated compound eye-like system regulated by chromatophores has been extensively reiterated, with investigations into biomimetic optics and si

The retina is part of the central nervous system, and shares the characteristically high metabolism of the brain. The high energy demand of the retina is normally matched with a large supply of metabolites. When supply does not equal demand (e.g. if retinal blood flow is impaired), retinal neurons are at risk of excitotoxic cell death and vision is impaired or lost. Understanding the energetic budget of the retina is therefore crucial for understanding the pathology and treatment of retinal disease. In this minireview I give an overview of the energetics of the retina, with a focus on lessons

Bees rely strongly on visual cues for essential tasks such as avoiding predators, targeting mates, and navigating their environment. However, physiological measures of photoreceptor acuity in bees remain scarce. Here, we used intracellular recordings in light-adapted eyes to estimate photoreceptor receptive fields (angular sensitivity, Δρ) and detectability thresholds in compound eyes of both sexes in four bee species. We recorded from the bumblebee Bombus terrestris; two closely related but biogeographically distant apid species, Anthophora quadrimaculata and Amegilla murrayensis; and the sol
