Phototaxis in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Parameters which distinguish phototaxis from random motility in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii have been defined with quantitative assays. The phototactic responses in photosynthetic, mixotrophic, and heterotrophic cultures were highest during exponential growth and declined rapidly as the cultures entered stationary phase. In contrast, random motility was relatively constant throughout growth. Phototaxis and motility also differ in their sensitivity to azide and antimycin A. Both of these drugs inhibited phototaxis within 5 min, but motility was unaffected for at least 30 min. Phototaxis and motil

Ultradian and circadian rhythms of phototaxis in chlamydomonas reinhardii.

We investigated phototactic and circadian rhythmicity in Chlamydomonas reinhardii under photoautotrophic (HSM) and photoorganotrophic (HSA) conditions to explore the influence of metabolic context on rhythmic behavior. Cultures were grown under controlled conditions (LD 12:12, 28 °C). Phototaxis was monitored using an automated multi-channel system that continuously recorded light transmission changes associated with photoaccumulation. Cell density and chlorophyll a were also quantified. Organisms incubated in continuous dim light showed a robust free-running circadian rhythm (∼24 h) with phas

Leveraging design for collective phototaxis in morphological swarm robotics.

Morphological computing-the use of a robot's physical design to facilitate task execution-has emerged as a promising strategy in swarm robotics. Here, through experiments and simulations, we show that its success critically depends on both the robots' control policy and the details of their physical design. We study a swarm of Kilobots embedded in an exoskeleton whose geometry controls the propensity of robots to align or anti-align with the external force they experience. Experimentally, the contrast between the two morphologies in the success rate of a simple phototactic task becomes dramati

Modeling Phototaxis and Planktonic Cell Behavior in Phototrophic Biofilms.

We propose a continuous multidimensional multispecies model of planktonic cell invasion in phototrophic biofilms that incorporates phototaxis as a key mechanism driving directed movement along light gradients. The biofilm is modeled as a homogeneous, viscous, incompressible fluid, with the velocity field governed by a Darcy-type law. The phototactic behavior of planktonic cells is integrated in the model by considering a reaction-advection-diffusion equation including a diffusive and tactic flux with a volume-filling term. Cell movement toward favorable light conditions and away from harmful o

Euhaplorchis californiensis Cercariae Exhibit Positive Phototaxis and Negative Geotaxis.

Parasites often use external cues to identify and move toward environments where they are likely to encounter suitable hosts. The trematode parasite Euhaplorchis californiensis produces cercariae that emerge from California horn snails ( Cerithideopsis californica [= Cerithidea californica]) to infect California killifish ( Fundulus parvipinnis) as second intermediate hosts. Based upon work on a congeneric Euhaplorchis species from Florida, and based on the ecology of its killifish host, we hypothesized that E. californiensis cercariae in southern California estuaries are positively phototacti

Behavioral algorithms of ontogenetic switching in larval and juvenile zebrafish phototaxis.

Animals undergo major behavioral adjustments during ontogeny, but how the underlying cognitive algorithms change during this process remains elusive. Here, we describe that zebrafish shift from light-seeking to dark-seeking as they grow from larval to juvenile stage. Combining complementary phototaxis assays in virtual reality and modeling, we dissect the computational basis of this transition. We identify three parallel pathways, one analyzing ambient whole-field luminance levels, one spatially comparing light levels across the eyes, and one computing luminance change in each eye. Larvae most

The effect of fullerenes and functionalized fullerenes on Daphnia magna phototaxis and swimming behavior.

The effects of carbon fullerenes (C(60) ) on the environment is a growing concern as the use of nanotechnology continues to increase. Previous studies have reported alteration in Daphnia magna behavior, including increased hopping frequency, heart rate, and appendage movement in response to tetrahydrofuran-solubilized C(60) and increased hopping rate and appendage movement in response to tetrahydrofuran-solubilized C(60) HxC(70) Hx exposure. The objective of the current study was to evaluate effects of water-stirred C(60) and sonicated carboxylic acid functionalized fullerenes (fC(60) ) on D.

Calcium Control of the Sign of Phototaxis in Brown Algal Gametes of Mutimo cylindricus.

Brown algal swarmers usually exhibit positive or negative phototaxis. Such behaviors influence the increasing or decreasing dispersal distance or colonization on the new substratum. We confirmed that the sign of phototaxis (negative or positive) in male gametes of Mutimo cylindricus was affected by extracellular Ca2+ influx through Ca2+ channels. Under the control condition (10-2 m [Ca2+ ]), male gametes swimming with a helical rotation of their cell body mostly showed positive phototaxis. At 10-3 m [Ca2+ ], more than half of the male gametes showed positive phototaxis, whereas the others show

Within- and Between-Subject Analyses of the Effects of Chronic Xylazine on Negative Phototaxis in Two Planarian Species.

Xylazine, an adulterant found frequently in illicit fentanyl, has been implicated in causing several adverse effects in human recreational users, including skin lesions and complications in the treatment of opiate overdose. Despite these public health concerns, the literature on the basic behavioral effects of xylazine is limited. Recent research has demonstrated that planarians show potential as an emerging and practical animal model for studying the behavioral effects of acute xylazine exposure. The goal of the current investigation was to evaluate the behavioral effects of chronic xylazine

The role of opsin genes in mediating phototaxis and color preference in the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer).

BACKGROUND: Insect light traps and color sticky traps are widely used to monitor and control pests based on phototaxis, but the role of opsin genes in regulating phototaxis and color preference in Myzus persicae remains poorly understood. RESULTS: The M. persicae showed stronger phototactic response to green light than to yellow light, yet preferred yellow cardboard. Four opsin genes (MpLW, MpUV1, MpUV2, and MpUV-Like) were cloned and characterized, revealing distinct spatiotemporal expression patterns. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induced MpUV1, MpUV2, and MpUV-Like expression, whereas green

Chlamydomonas LZTFL1 mediates phototaxis via controlling BBSome recruitment to the basal body and its reassembly at the ciliary tip.

Many G protein-coupled receptors and other signaling proteins localize to the ciliary membrane for regulating diverse cellular processes. The BBSome composed of multiple Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) proteins is an intraflagellar transport (IFT) cargo adaptor essential for sorting signaling proteins in and/or out of cilia via IFT. Leucine zipper transcription factor-like 1 (LZTFL1) protein mediates ciliary signaling by controlling BBSome ciliary content, reflecting how LZTFL1 mutations could cause BBS. However, the mechanistic mechanism underlying this process remains elusive thus far. Here, we

Integrating phototaxis research with pest control: laboratory-based wavelength preference screening and field efficacy evaluation of sticky traps for Monolepta hieroglyphica management.

BACKGROUND: Monolepta hieroglyphica (Motschulsky) is a significant agricultural pest, primarily infesting crops such as maize, soybean and cotton. Recently, with the commercialization of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenic maize, this nontarget insect has emerged as a potential primary pest. Current management relies heavily on chemical control, but prolonged and improper insecticide use can promote resistance development and negatively affect natural enemies. Consequently, based on the visual system of insects, developing comprehensive physical trapping strategies is of the utmost importan

Lighting-driven behavioral responses in zebrafish for water toxicity monitoring and ecological risk assessment.

Zebrafish exhibit innate phototaxis, making light stimulation a promising tool for water toxicity monitoring. This study systematically investigated the effects of light color (red, yellow, green, blue), intensity (0-2400 lx), and stimulation duration (1-3 min) on zebrafish phototactic and locomotor behaviors, and established an optimized photobehavioral assay. The results showed that zebrafish exhibited strong positive phototaxis toward red light (612 nm, peak 78.74%) and clear negative phototaxis toward blue light (450 nm, peak -36.23%), with peak behavioral responses at 700 lx and 300 lx, r

Stage-specific phototactic behavior and opsin-mediated light perception in the concealed-feeding palm pest Octodonta nipae.

BACKGROUND: Negative phototaxis is a widespread but underexplored behavior in concealed-feeding insects, and its adaptive value and sensory mechanisms remain poorly understood compared with light attraction. The invasive palm pest Octodonta nipae inhabits folded leaflets and shaded microhabitats, providing a suitable system to examine how light avoidance contributes to habitat adaptation and whether opsin-mediated perception regulates stage-specific phototaxis. RESULTS: Larvae of O. nipae exhibited strong negative phototaxis (>70% selected dark chambers), whereas adults displayed positive pho

Distinct retinal pathways drive spatial orientation behaviors in zebrafish navigation.

Navigation requires animals to adjust ongoing movements in response to pertinent features of the environment and select between competing target cues. The neurobiological basis of navigational behavior in vertebrates is hard to analyze, partly because underlying neural circuits are experience dependent. Phototaxis in zebrafish is a hardwired navigational behavior, performed at a stage when larvae swim by using a small repertoire of stereotyped movements. We established conditions to elicit robust phototaxis behavior and found that zebrafish larvae deploy directional orienting maneuvers and reg

The compound eye structure, phototactic traits and opsin gene-mediating photosensitive mechanism in Nilaparvata lugens.

BACKGROUND: Nilaparvata lugens is a major rice pest in Asia, exhibiting significant phototactic behavior, which plays a critical role in its migration and colonization. However, the response characteristics of N. lugens to different light wavelengths and its underlying molecular mechanisms are unclear. This study aims to investigate visual structure, the phototaxis and opsin gene functions in N. lugens to provide a theoretical basis for developing new vision-based physical control techniques. RESULTS: Female N. lugens exhibited more ommatidia (501.3 vs. 470.7), larger ommatidial size (277.4 v

Phototactic behaviour and neurotransmitter profiles in two Daphnia magna clones: Vertical and horizontal responses to fish kairomones and psychotropic drugs.

Animal behavioural responses are increasingly being used in environmental risk assessment. Nevertheless, behavioural responses are still hampered by a lack of standardisation. Phototactic behaviour in zooplankton and in particular in Daphnia has often been associated to vertical migration but there is also 'shore-avoidance' horizontal behaviour: Daphnia uses shades along the shore to swim either to or away from the shore and predators. Previously, we develop a vertical oriented behavioural hardware able to reproduce phototactic fish induced depth selection in Daphnia magna, its modulation by f

Multi-Responsive Upconversion Hybrid Nanobots Clad with Dopamine for Light-Driven Breast Cancer Therapy.

The field of fuel-free light-powered nano/microbots with stimulus-responsive behavior can have crucial implications for biomedical research. In this study, we have synthesized smart NIR laser-responsive self-propelling folic acid-functionalized, dopamine-coated, and rose bengal-loaded upconvertible nanobots that exhibited unidirectional phototaxis in the presence of the NIR laser. When exposed to a 980 nm laser, the nanobots demonstrated positive phototaxis with a speed of ≈27 ± 7 μm/s at a power of 1500 mW. These further confirmed stimuli-regulated phototaxis in the presence of various factor

An automated high-throughput platform reveals chromatic phototactic disruption in Daphnia magna exposed to the UV filters benzophenone-3 and octocrylene.

Modern imaging enables real-time observation of behavior under stress. Light is a major stressor for fish larvae and aquatic invertebrates, yet the effects of different wavelengths and intensities on behavior remain poorly understood. The freshwater zooplankton Daphnia magna, a key model species, typically displays negative vertical phototaxis to avoid predation. This study applied a high-throughput video-tracking system to assess chromatic phototactic responses in D. magna exposed to two common UV filters, octocrylene (OC) and benzophenone-3 (BP-3), at concentrations from 0.1 to 1000 μg/L.
