Influence of high concentrations of mineral salts on production process and NaCl accumulation by Salicornia europaea plants as a constituent of the LSS phototroph link.

Use of halophytes (salt-tolerant vegetation), in a particular vegetable Salicornia europaea plants which are capable of utilizing NaCl in rather high concentrations, is one of possible means of NaCl incorporation into mass exchange of bioregenerative life support systems. In preliminary experiments it was shown that S. europaea plants, basically, could grow on urine pretreated with physicochemical processing and urease-enzyme decomposing of urea with the subsequent ammonia distillation. But at the same time inhibition of the growth process of the plants was observed. The purpose of the given w

Mixotrophic lifestyle of the ichthyotoxic haptophyte, Prymnesium parvum, offered different sources of phosphorus.

Many harmful algae are mixoplanktonic, i.e. they combine phototrophy and phagotrophy, and this ability may explain their ecological success, especially when environmental conditions are not optimal for autotrophic growth. In this study, laboratory experiments were conducted with the mixotrophic and ichthyotoxic haptophyte Prymnesium parvum (strain CCAP 946/6) to test the effects of phosphorus (P) sufficiency and deficiency on its growth rate, phagotrophic and lytic activities. P-deficient P. parvum cultures were grown without or with addition of P in the form of inorganic phosphorus (nutrients

Thermal history influences the recovery of phototrophic biofilms exposed to agricultural run-off in intermittent rivers.

The response of microbial communities to disturbances may be controlled by the past environmental conditions, through their legacy effect. In intermittent rivers, the fixed microorganisms, such as phototrophic biofilms, are exposed to variable environmental conditions, including changes in water chemistry, hydrodynamics and, in some cases water temperature. The latter may be particularly affected by the increasing frequency of summer heat waves. Our objective was therefore to assess the legacy effect of warming on phototrophic biofilms during a flow intermittency sequence. Our main hypotheses

Potential of enriched phototrophic purple bacteria for H2 bioconversion into single cell protein.

Single cell protein (SCP) has emerged as an alternative protein source, potentially based on the recovery of carbon and nutrients from waste-derived resources as part of the circular economy. From those resources, gaseous substrates have the advantage of an easy sterilization, allowing the production of pathogen-free SCP. Sterile gaseous substrates allow producing pathogen-free SCP. This study evaluated the use of an enriched phototrophic purple bacteria (PPB) consortium for SCP production using H2 and CO2 as electron and C sources. The influence of pH (6.0-8.5), temperature (15-50 °C) and lig

Molecular Physiology of Anaerobic Phototrophic Purple and Green Sulfur Bacteria.

There are two main types of bacterial photosynthesis: oxygenic (cyanobacteria) and anoxygenic (sulfur and non-sulfur phototrophs). Molecular mechanisms of photosynthesis in the phototrophic microorganisms can differ and depend on their location and pigments in the cells. This paper describes bacteria capable of molecular oxidizing hydrogen sulfide, specifically the families Chromatiaceae and Chlorobiaceae, also known as purple and green sulfur bacteria in the process of anoxygenic photosynthesis. Further, it analyzes certain important physiological processes, especially those which are charact

Elucidating metabolic tuning of mixed purple phototrophic bacteria biofilms in photoheterotrophic conditions through microbial photo-electrosynthesis.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is critical for humanity nowadays, but it can be beneficial by developing engineered systems that valorize CO2 into commodities, thus mimicking nature's wisdom. Purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) naturally accept CO2 into their metabolism as a primary redox sink system in photo-heterotrophy. Dedicated use of this feature for developing sustainable processes (e.g., through negative-emissions photo-bioelectrosynthesis) requires a deep knowledge of the inherent metabolic mechanisms. This work provides evidence of tuning the PPB metabolic mechanisms upon redox str

A little bit of light goes a long way: the role of phototrophs on mercury cycling.

Among toxic metals, mercury (Hg) is a global priority contaminant due to the biomagnification of the most toxic form methylmercury (MeHg) in food webs, even in remote regions, such as the high Arctic. The importance of Hg as a chemical of major concern to human health was underscored by the recent adoption of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, a legally binding treaty that requires government agencies be equipped to monitor processes affecting global mercury transport and cycling. For several decades now, field and laboratory experiments have shown that phototrophs can directly interact with

Facilitated Channeling of Fixed Carbon and Energy into Chemicals in Artificial Phototrophic Communities.

Light-driven CO2 biovalorization offers a promising route for coupling carbon mitigation with petrochemical replacement. Synthetic phototrophic communities that mimic lichens can reduce the metabolic burden with improved CO2 utilization. However, inefficient channeling of carbon and energy between species seriously hinders the collaborative CO2-to-molecule route. Herein, we report a universal carbon sequestration (UCS) module based on photosynthetic microbes that provides a high-speed tunnel for channeling carbon and energy to heterotrophs. Compared to that of the traditional CO2-to-sucrose mo

Kleiber's Law: How the Fire of Life ignited debate, fueled theory, and neglected plants as model organisms.

Size is a key feature of any organism since it influences the rate at which resources are consumed and thus affects metabolic rates. In the 1930s, size-dependent relationships were codified as "allometry" and it was shown that most of these could be quantified using the slopes of log-log plots of any 2 variables of interest. During the decades that followed, physiologists explored how animal respiration rates varied as a function of body size across taxa. The expectation was that rates would scale as the 2/3 power of body size as a reflection of the Euclidean relationship between surface area

Phototrophy and carbon fixation in Chlorobi postdate the rise of oxygen.

While most productivity on the surface of the Earth today is fueled by oxygenic photosynthesis, for much of Earth history it is thought that anoxygenic photosynthesis-using compounds like ferrous iron or sulfide as electron donors-drove most global carbon fixation. Anoxygenic photosynthesis is still performed by diverse bacteria in niche environments today. Of these, the Chlorobi (formerly green sulfur bacteria) are often interpreted as being particularly ancient and are frequently proposed to have fueled the biosphere during late Archean and early Paleoproterozoic time before the rise of oxyg

Thermo resistant antioxidants from photoautotrophic microorganisms: screening and characterization.

The demand for natural antioxidants to be used in food industry is increasing, as synthetic antioxidants are toxic and have high production costs. Specifically, food processing and preservation require antioxidants resistant to thermal sterilization processes. In this study, twenty-five strains among microalgae and cyanobacteria were screened as antioxidants producers. The species Enallax sp., Synechococcus bigranulatus and Galdieria sulphuraria showed the highest content of chlorophyll a and total carotenoids. In vitro stability and antioxidant activity of the ethanolic extracts were performe

Network Component Analysis Can Identify Potential Axenisation Strategies Circumventing Antibiotic-Use for Phototrophic Eukaryotic Microalgae.

Axenisation of phototrophic eukaryotic microalgae has been studied for over a century, with antibiotics commonly employed to achieve axenic cultures. However, this approach often yields inconsistent outcomes and contributes to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant microbes. A comprehensive analysis of previous reports on axenisation was necessary to identify alternate workflows tailored to each major microalgal group. Literature from scholarly databases was systematically recovered and network component analysis was performed to identify method-clusters commonly reported for the axenisation of

Enhanced accumulation of glycogen, lipids and polyhydroxybutyrate under optimal nutrients and light intensities in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803.

AIMS: Glycogen (GL) and lipids (LP) are efficient biofuel substrates, whereas polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is a potent biodegradable plastic. This study aimed to increase accumulation of these three compounds in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. METHODS AND RESULTS: Under autophototrophic growth, co-accumulation of the three compounds reached maximum level in a mid-stationary phase at 39·2% of dry weight (22·7% GL, 14·1% LP and 2·4% PHB). Nitrogen deprivation increased this to 61·5% (36·8% GL, 11·2% LP and 13·5% PHB), higher than that achieved by phosphorus, sulfur, iron or calcium deprivation. Combin

Metabolic responses of purple phototrophic bacteria to elevated hydrogen partial pressure: Metatranscriptomic insights into biohydrogen production and consumption.

During biohydrogen production, self-generated gas accumulation can lead to elevated hydrogen partial pressure (HPP) in the headspace. However, the effects of elevated HPP on hydrogen yield in photo fermentation systems and the metabolic responses of phototrophic bacteria (PPB) under such conditions remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of elevated HPP on PPB-based biohydrogen production and examined the underlying metabolic responses using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis. PPB maintained efficient H2 production (0.67 ± 0.09 L H2·g COD-1; 0.09 ± 0.01 L H2·L-1·

Photoresponse in the heterotrophic marine dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina.

Expressed rhodopsins were detected by proteomic analysis in an investigation of potential signal receptors in the cell membrane of the marine heterotrophic dinoflagellate Oxyrrhis marina (CCMP604). We inferred these to be sensory rhodopsins, a type of G-protein-coupled receptor trans-membrane signaling molecule. Because phototactic behavior based on sensory rhodopsins has been reported in other protists, we investigated the photosensory response of O. marina. This dinoflagellate exhibited strongest positive phototaxis at low levels (2-3 μE/m(2)/s) of white light when the cells were previously

Modeling Phototaxis and Planktonic Cell Behavior in Phototrophic Biofilms.

We propose a continuous multidimensional multispecies model of planktonic cell invasion in phototrophic biofilms that incorporates phototaxis as a key mechanism driving directed movement along light gradients. The biofilm is modeled as a homogeneous, viscous, incompressible fluid, with the velocity field governed by a Darcy-type law. The phototactic behavior of planktonic cells is integrated in the model by considering a reaction-advection-diffusion equation including a diffusive and tactic flux with a volume-filling term. Cell movement toward favorable light conditions and away from harmful o

C1 photochemotrophy - rethinking one-carbon metabolism in phototrophs.

Excessive CO2 emissions, caused by an imbalance between carbon oxidation and reduction, drive climate change. To address this, we propose photochemotrophic metabolism as an alternative to both canonical photosynthesis and synthetic one-carbon (C1) metabolism in heterotrophs. In photochemotrophy, naturally phototrophic microorganisms such as cyanobacteria serve as the chassis to assimilate chemically reduced and soluble C1 compounds such as formate or methanol by using carbon fixation cycles that are more efficient than the native Calvin cycle. Key potential advantages of photochemotrophy inclu

Proteome Response of a Metabolically Flexible Anoxygenic Phototroph to Fe(II) Oxidation.

The oxidation of Fe(II) by anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria was likely a key contributor to Earth's biosphere prior to the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis and is still found in a diverse range of modern environments. All known phototrophic Fe(II) oxidizers can utilize a wide range of substrates, thus making them very metabolically flexible. However, the underlying adaptations required to oxidize Fe(II), a potential stressor, are not completely understood. We used a combination of quantitative proteomics and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) to compare cells of Rhodop
