Among the numerous theories and concepts advanced throughout the history of medicine, phrenology remains one of the most recognizable and controversial. Promoted as a scientific discipline that linked human behavioral traits to scalp morphology, phrenology, from its inception by Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) and Johann Gaspar Spurzheim (1776-1832), faced significant criticism for its lack of reproducible evidence and its historical use in supporting racial and misogynistic ideologies. Despite its reputation for reinforcing social and racial stereotypes, some minority groups and social movement

Whereas some of Gall's critics were quick to assail his organology as materialistic and fatalistic, others questioned his methods and scientific assumptions, especially his craniological tenets. The idea that the skull does not faithfully reflect the features of small, underlying brain areas was repeatedly brought up in the scientific debates. Critics pointed to the frontal sinuses above the eye orbits as evidence for the interior and exterior plates of the cranium not being in parallel-hence, for several or many phrenological organs being unknowable. This article traces the origins of the fro

Clara Barton was 39 years old before she became involved in Civil War humanitarian activities. Prior to that time, three factors shaped her personality and her future: phrenology gave her philosophical principles to live by, especially "Know Thyself"; sex discrimination on her first two jobs steeled her for living in a male dominated Victorian era; and psychohygienic therapy for her long term nervous prostration changed her behavioral approach to illness and to life. With these three influences in hand, Barton went on to gain world-wide adulation. During the Civil War, she was revered as the A

Franz Josef Gall, born in 1758, studied medicine in Strasbourg and Vienna and focused his research in two areas. His most notorious research was in craniofacial morphology that gradually evolved into the pseudoscience of phrenology. His second research area was neuroanatomy. Although Gall is usually best remembered for his inglorious introduction of phrenology, his neuroanatomic contributions have more lasting significance. In this vignette we explore Gall's neuroanatomic contributions especially as they relate to brain stem anatomy. By means of blunt dissection he was the first to describe th

The writer Georg Büchner (1813-1837) is considered one of the giants of German literature. Comparatively less well known, however, is the fact that Büchner was also a gifted neuroanatomist who completed his medical studies with a dissertation on the nervous system of the barbel (a freshwater fish with a high incidence in the River Rhine) and gave a lecture on cranial nerves shortly afterward, hoping to secure a position at the University of Zurich. In the copious secondary literature on Büchner, it has often been discussed whether and how his poetic and scientific writings were interrelated. I

Over the centuries, people have tried to determine character traits from a person's appearance, beginning with the physiognomic efforts of the Greek philosophers Socrates (ca. 470-399 bce) and Aristotle (384-322 bce) and still continuing today. In this quest, the discovery of criminal tendencies from someone's face always received special attention. This was also an important issue for physician Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828). Gall maintained that a criminal's skull had a different shape than that of a law-abiding person. Phrenologists, as well as criminologists, including Cesare Lombroso (1835

Just a few weeks before his death in 1828, Franz Joseph Gall, the father of what others would later call phrenology, wrote a letter to an unknown person, presumably a fellow physician. The manuscript describes the case of girl, 19 months of age. The girl's skull showed marked deformations consistent with what would be called craniosynostosis or Crouzon('s) syndrome by physicians today. Gall related some clinical features of her case and suggested some treatment options. This case report is particularly interesting because it is almost 200 years old, predates Crouzon's description of the syndro

In this lecture I have attempted to demonstrate that the size of the lumbar vertebral canal has clinical importance. The canal develops very early in life, and impaired growth at this time affects other growing systems. The patient with spinal stenosis has more than a spinal disadvantage. Improved obstetric and childhood care has the potential not only to prevent some of the troublesome back problems, but also to influence the health and neurological status in adult life. I hope that the first Henderson Trustees would have been encouraged by this lecture. It supports some of the philosophy tha

This article examines J. G. Farrell's depictions of colonial medicine as a means of analysing the historical reception of the further past and argues that the end-of-Empire context of the 1970s in which Farrell was writing informed his reappraisal of Imperial authority with particular regard to the limits of medical knowledge and treatment. The article illustrates how in The Siege of Krishnapur (1973), Farrell repeatedly sought to challenge the authority of medical and colonial history by making direct use of period material in the construction of his fictional narrative; by using these source

Historians of neurophysiology remember Marie Jean Pierre Flourens (1794-1867) for his experimental approach to nineteenth-century debates on cortical localization and, in particular, for his successful attacks on Frantz Joseph Gall's (1758-1828) phrenology (Gall and Spurzheim, 1810-19). Whereas Gall and his colleague, Johann Gaspar Spurzheim (1776-1832), posited correlations between features of the skull and brain development and claimed to have localized character traits, competencies and temperaments in specific cortical regions, Flourens advocated cerebral equipotentiality and provided empi

The cause of behavioural changes described by Alzheimer for his original case, Auguste D., has been recently reconfirmed by histological examination. However, there has been active speculation regarding the cause of behavioural changes exhibited by the political satirist Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) during the final three years of his life for over 250 years. Swift's symptoms of cognitive changes, memory impairment, personality alterations, language disorder and facial paralysis have all been apportioned differing levels of significance in various attempts at retrospective diagnosis. The various

Health inequities in the United States are not accidental but structural-deliberately created and systematically upheld. This first paper in a two-part series examines how American founding values, cultural norms, and historical practices established inequity as an enduring feature of healthcare and academic systems. Although the nation professed ideals of freedom and justice, Black and Brown communities were excluded through policies grounded in Anglo-Saxon supremacy and White solidarity. Wealth extracted from enslaved labor exceeded $3 billion by 1860, and later programs such as the GI Bill

Nascent cerebellar neuropsychiatry is rewriting complex human relations. In daily practice this sheds light on subsets of therapy-resistant patients, who feel hampered by a lack of skills in predictively presensing the trajectories to where especially their interpersonal appropriations might end up. Humans affected by "dysmetric" social phobia often lead minimal lives, strongly dislike exposition, suffer fatiguability also from immune dysfunctions, and anhedonia. In social dysmetria especially on the cerebellar cortex`s both lateralmost Crus-II (Van Overwalle) seem damaged, the left Crus-I may

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Approximately 400,000 years ago men started to use language. Initially it was probably poor with few phonemes. With social evolution it became more complex, with the appearance of new phonemes and a more complete grammatical structure. The current concept of the processing of language dates, with little change, from the nineteenth century.
DEVELOPMENT: With the birth of phrenology language began to be studied. This lead to the hypothesis of Wernicke, with two main areas joined by the fasciculo arcuato, which is still held to be valid with modifications by Gerchwind

Liver fibrosis remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality with a complicated etiology and notorious complications, but there is a lack of efficacious therapeutics. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) has a central role in the course of liver fibrosis, and thus, prevention of the development of EMT may control and even reverse liver fibrosis. This study aimed to examine the beneficial effect of ginsenoside Rg1, a phrenological active component isolated from Ginseng, and interrogate the mechanism in vitro and in vivo, with a focus on transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/Smad and Nrf

This article focuses on a series of six studies that address functional localization in the frontal lobe; they were published in Argentina between 1906 and 1909 by Christfried Jakob (1866-1956), one of the great thinkers in early 20th century neuropathology and neurophilosophy. At that time, the localization-holism controversy was at a peak, having been triggered by the historic Marie-Déjerine aphasiology debate. Jakob held the view that constitutive physiological elements of cognition are localized. Nonetheless, he cast doubt on phrenological approaches that considered the frontal lobe as 'su

Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have sought a physical means of altering disordered behavior and consciousness. This quest has spawned numerous innovations in neurosurgery and the neurosciences, from the earliest prehistoric attempts at trepanation to the electrocortical and anatomic localization of cerebral function that emerged in the 19th century. At the start of the 20th century, the overwhelming social impact of psychiatric illness intersected with the novel but imperfect understanding of frontal lobe function, establishing a decades-long venture into the modern origin of

Based on internal medicine and psychiatry and in close connection with pathology, the neurosciences in Austria began to develop in the 18(th) century, e.g. with the description of inflammation of the central nervous system by J. P. Franck (1745-1823) and the "phrenology" by F. J. Gall (1745-1823). Under the influence of the great pathologist C. Rokitansky (1804-1878), the tripode of the Vienna neurology - L. Türck (1810-1868), as initiator, Th. v. Meynert (1833-1892) the activator, and H. Obersteiner (1847-1922) as the founder of the Vienna Neurological Institute, presented basic contributions
