Two partially purified organic fractions designated by PR1 and PR2 of the fat free ethanol (95%) extract of aerial parts of Phyllanthus reticulatus were tested for the hepatoprotective activity in rats against CCl(4)-induced liver damage. The rats receiving the fractions showed promising hepatoprotective activity as evident from significant changes of pentobarbital-induced sleeping time, changes in serum levels of sGPT, sGOT, sALP and bilirubin and also from histopathological changes as compared to CCl(4)-intoxicated rats.

Different fractions of alcoholic extracts of aerial parts and roots of Phyllanthus fraternus Webster (Euphorbiaceae) were screened for antihepatotoxic activity on carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in albino rats. The degree of protection was measured using biochemical parameters like serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), total protein (TP) and total albumin (TA). The methanol fraction was found to be the most active, which was further supported by a significant recovery of hepatocytes in the histopathological study of the liver sho

The therapeutic potential of plant extracts of Phyllanthus amarus and Phyllanthus maderas patensis for postexposure prophylaxis against infection by Hepadnaviruses was studied in ducklings infected by the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV). Forty-four Pekin ducklings were inoculated intraperitoneally with DHBV at 24 hr post-hatch. They were treated by intraperitoneal injection of Phyllanthus amarus (aqueous extract) (100 mg/kg body weight) or Phyllanthus mad eraspatensis (alcoholic extract) (100 mg/kg body weight) for a period of 4 weeks. Infected ducklings treated with saline served as controls. W

Viral infections and diseases caused by viruses are worldwide problems. According to a WHO report, three to five million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) each year globally. Since some viruses mutate very quickly, developing antiviral drugs can be a daunting task. Moreover, currently used synthetic drugs are toxic and associated with side effects. Therefore, there is a need to search for alternative natural remedies that have low toxicity, a new mechanism of action, and no major side effects. Phyllanth

The methanol extract from the leaves of Phyllanthus niruri L. showed oral antihyperuricemic activity in potassium oxonate- and uric acid-induced hyperuricemic rats. Fractionation of the extract by resin chromatography led to the isolation of a less polar fraction which exhibited the highest reduction of plasma uric acid. Further antihyperuricemic-guided purification of the fraction afforded three lignans, phyllanthin (1), hypophyllanthin (2) and phyltetralin (3), of which 1 significantly reversed the plasma uric acid level of hyperuricemic animals to its normal level in a dose-dependent manner

A dichloromethane extract of the leaves of Phyllanthus polyphyllus var. siamensis afforded two new monoacetylated triterpene arabinosides (1 and 2) and 15 known compounds. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation. The isolates and some chemical transformation products were evaluated biologically, and the presence of an arabinosyl moiety among the hederagenin glycosides evaluated was found to be important for the modulation of cytotoxic activity against cancer cells.

Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system. Chronic pain is one of the main symptoms, affecting many patients. Studies show that the lignans or the apolar extracts of Phyllanthus amarus have antinociceptive effects in different animal models. To evaluate the antihypernociceptive effect of a hexanic extract of P. amarus in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mice, the chemical composition of the hexanic extract was analyzed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. After EAE induction, animals were treated with the hexanic extract of P. amarus for 26 con

In a preliminary study, carriers of hepatitis B virus were treated with a preparation of the plant Phyllanthus amarus for 30 days. 22 of 37 (59%) treated patients had lost hepatitis B surface antigen when tested 15-20 days after the end of the treatment compared with only 1 of 23 (4%) placebo-treated controls. Some subjects have been followed for up to 9 months. In no case has the surface antigen returned. Clinical observation revealed few or no toxic effects. The encouraging results of this preliminary study recommend continued evaluation of this plant and the active principles isolated from

A comprehensive chemical investigation of the EtOAc extract derived from the dried branches and leaves of Phyllanthus franchetianus H. Lév had successfully resulted to the isolation of six undescribed cleistanthane diterpenoids phyllanfranins A-F (1-6), along with three known compounds phyllarheophol C (7), phyacioid C (8), and spruceanol (9). The chemical structures of these compounds were elucidated by combined means of HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR spectra, together with ECD calculations. The absolute configuration of phyllanfranin A (1) was established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health threat caused by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. It leads to infections becoming difficult to treat, causing serious illness, disability, and death. Current antibiotic development is slow, with only 25% of current antibiotics exhibiting novel mechanisms against critical pathogens. Traditional medicinal plants' secondary metabolites offer potential for developing novel antibacterial compounds. These compounds, often with strong antimicrobial activity, can be used to develop safe and effective antibacterial chemotherapies. This stud

BACKGROUND: Phyllanthus species for patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection have been assessed in clinical trials, but no consensus regarding their usefulness exists. When compared with placebo or no intervention, we were unable to identify convincing evidence that phyllanthus species are beneficial in patients with chronic hepatitis B. Some randomised clinical trials have compared phyllanthus species versus antiviral drugs.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of phyllanthus species compared with antiviral drugs for patients with chronic HBV infection.
