Morphophysiological disorders and metabolic reprogramming in Physalis peruviana infected with the physalis rugose mosaic virus.

Physalis peruviana L. (Cape gooseberry) is susceptible to several pathogens, among which the sobemovirus physalis rugose mosaic virus (PhyRMV) is most prominent. This study investigated the anatomical, morphophysiological, and metabolic responses of P. peruviana to PhyRMV over the course of the infection cycle. P. peruviana plants were grown under greenhouse conditions (24 ± 2 ℃) and mechanically inoculated with buffer (mock) or PhyRMV inoculum. The local and systemic leaves were collected at 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, and 42 days after inoculation (DAI) and viral infection was confirmed by RT-qPCR. Mor

Structural Identification of Physalis alkekengi L. Polysaccharides.

Physalis alkekengi L. fruit polysaccharides can reduce blood sugar, regulate blood lipids, and improve intestinal flora structure. However, the specific polysaccharide components exerting these effects are unclear. In this study, we extracted, separated, purified, and characterized the P. alkekengi polysaccharides Phy-1a, Phy-1b, and Phy-1c. Ion chromatography showed that Phy-1b was mainly composed of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, and xylose at a molar ratio of 3.0:19.8:47.5:20.9:8.8, and Phy-1c was composed of rhamnose, arabinose, galactose, glucose, xylose, mannose, ribose Galacto

Fatal Portuguese man-o'-war (Physalia physalis) envenomation.

A fatal case of Physalia physalis (Portuguese man-o'-war) envenomation occurred on the Florida Atlantic coast in 1987. Despite appropriate beachside first aid, the patient was conscious only several minutes before having primary respiratory arrest and, later, cardiovascular collapse that resulted in death. Discharged nematocysts were still visible on the injured stratum corneum five days after envenomation. Additional treatment maneuvers suggested by this case include testing the tentacle fragments found on the victim's skin before their removal to ensure that nematocyst firing has been counte

Anti-Inflammatory Withanolides From Physalis angulata Var. villosa Bonati.

Two new withanolide derivatives (1 and 2) and 12 known withanolide analogs (3-14) were identified from the aerial part of Physalis angulata var. villosa Bonati. Their structures were determined by various spectral data, quantum chemical calculations, and sugar derivatization methods. Three compounds (2, 3, and 14) demonstrated good nitric oxide inhibitory effects against lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW264.7 cells, with IC50 values of 4.93 ± 0.22-8.58 ± 0.83 µM. The present study suggests that withanolide derivatives have potential anti-inflammatory activity and could be used to treat inflamm

First envenomation report of the Cnidarian Physalia physalis in Indonesia.

Despite the high number of victims every year, Physalia physalis's envenomations in Indonesia are scientifically unsounded. This annual event occurred mainly in Java's southern beaches and the Eastern Bali Islands, which are the most tourist destinations. The lack of scientific reports can lead to unaware and uneducated beachgoers resulting in a high number of victims, which in turn may ruin the economic sectors. Thus, this study aimed to report P. physalis's envenomation and its treatments in the southern beaches of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. It was based on the 15 beach lifeg

[Bioactive secondary metabolites produced by plants of the genus Physalis].

Plants from the genus Physalis L. (family Solanaceae), native to warm and subtropical regions of Central and South America, are particularly rich in secondary metabolites, e.g.: withanolides, physalins, calystegines, tropane and nortropane alkaloids. Due to the high biological activities of these compounds, in the tropics Physalis plants have been used for centuries as medicinal herbs in the treatment of urinary and skin diseases, gonorrhea, ulcers, sores and as a vermicidal drug. This review describes the main categories of secondary metabolites, their distribution, chemistry, biosynthesis as

Decay of self-incompatibility within a lifespan in Physalis acutifolia (Solanaceae).

Self-incompatibility decays with age in plants of Physalis acutifolia, and plants that have transitioned to selfing produce fewer seeds but with comparable viability. Self-compatibility in this system is closely related to flower size, which is in turn dependent on the direction of the cross, suggesting parental effects on both morphology and compatibility. The sharpleaf groundcherry, Physalis acutifolia, is polymorphic for self-compatibility, with naturally occurring self-incompatible (SI) and self-compatible (SC) populations. Moreover, SI individuals have been documented to transition to SC

In vitro and In Vivo Immunomodulatory Activity of Physalis angulata Concentrated Ethanolic Extract.

The need for new immunomodulatory drugs is due to the side effects associated with the prolonged use of the currently used immunomodulatory drugs. In this context, the present work aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effect of an ethanolic concentrated extract from Physalis angulata. The cytotoxicity of samples was determined using peritoneal macrophages though the Alamar Blue assay. The immunomodulatory activity of the ethanolic extract from P. angulata on activated macrophages was determined by measurement of nitrite and cytokine production. The immunosuppressive effects of the ethanol

Physalis angulata: A New Natural Host of Tomato chlorosis virus in Brazil.

Tomato chlorosis virus (ToCV) and Tomato infectious chlorosis virus (TICV) are the two Solanaceae-infecting Crinivirus species (family Closteroviridae) of worldwide importance. In Brazil, only ToCV has been detected under natural conditions infecting tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum), and potato (S. tuberosum), causing foliar chlorosis (1, 3). However, there are no formal reports of alternative weed hosts of ToCV. During crop surveys in Capão Bonito, São Paulo State, Brazil (May 2011), a high incidence (above 20%) of plants of the weed, cut leaf ground cherry (Physa
