Animal models in the study of exercise-induced cardiac hypertrophy.

Exercise training-induced cardiac hypertrophy occurs following a program of aerobic endurance exercise training and it is considered as a physiologically beneficial adaptation. To investigate the underlying biology of physiological hypertrophy, we rely on robust experimental models of exercise training in laboratory animals that mimic the training response in humans. A number of experimental strategies have been established, such as treadmill and voluntary wheel running and swim training models that all associate with cardiac growth. These approaches have been applied to numerous animal models

Cholinergic activation produces psychosomatic digitalis toxicity.

The purpose of this study was first to develop an animal model for stress-induced digitalis toxicity in such a way that physical and psychological factors might be kept separate. The other purpose was to begin an analysis of the mechanism of this psychosomatic effect. To do this, free-ranging guinea pigs were subjected to repeated sessions of signaled shock (Pavlovian fear conditioning) or to signal alone. On a probe day in which signals were delivered as usual but shock was not administered, guinea pigs were infused i.v. with ouabain after an i.p. injection of either saline, atropine sulfate

The effect of substratum type on aspects of swimming performance and behaviour in shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum.

The swimming performance and associated swimming behaviour (i.e. substratum-skimming, station-holding and free swimming) were assessed in shortnose sturgeon Acipenser brevirostrum during critical swimming and endurance swimming tests over a rough and a smooth substratum. It was hypothesized that the addition of a rough substratum in the swimming flume may provide a surface for the A. brevirostrum to grip and offer an energetic advantage. Substratum type did not affect the critical swimming performance, but A. brevirostrum consistently performed more bottom behaviours (i.e. substratum-skimming

Effect of exercise on systemic blood pressure and heart rate in horses.

Carotid loops were prepared in 3 horses several months prior to the experiments. Systemic blood pressure was recorded at rest and during exercise by insertion of a plastic cannula into the carotid artery. The pressure transducer was fixed at the neck of the animal. The blood pressure signal was transmitted by telemetry. When the horses were standing under the rider, the following results were obtained: heart rate 38 +/- 5 beats-min-1, systolic pressure 115 +/- 15, disstolic pressure 83 +/- 10, mean pressure 97 +/- 12, and pulse pressure 32 +/- 9 mm Hg. During steady gallop at a mean speed of 5

Variation in salivary cortisol responses in yearling Thoroughbred racehorses during their first year of training.

Thoroughbred horses are bred for competitive racing and undergo intense training regimes. The maintenance of physical soundness and desirable behavioural characteristics are critical to the longevity of a racing career. Horses intended for Flat racing generally enter training as yearlings and undergo introductory training prior to exercise conditioning for racing. This period requires rapid adjustment to a novel environment. As a prey animal, a horse's 'fight-or-flight' response is highly adapted, in which a well-understood component of this response, the hypothalamic-pituitary-axis, is activa

Effect of intensive exercise on plasmatic neutrophil elastase level in eventing and endurance horses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Intensive exercise induces a systemic inflammatory response characterised by an increase of blood neutrophil count and myeloperoxidase (MPO) release. Neutrophil elastase (NE) could also contribute to tissues lesions by its proteinase activities. OBJECTIVE: To compare plasmatic NE concentrations before and after different forms of intensive exercise. MATERIALS AND METHODS: EDTA blood samples were taken from 51 eventing horses (EvH) and 32 endurance horses (EndH) were sampled before the race (T0). Blood sampling was performed 2 h (T1) after completing either phase

Spaced training enhances equine learning performance.

This field experiment examined whether the well-documented benefit of spaced over massed training for humans and other animals generalizes to horses. Twenty-nine randomly selected horses (Equus ferus caballus) repeatedly encountered a novel obstacle-crossing task while under saddle. Horses were randomly assigned to the spaced-training condition (2 min work, 2 min rest, 2 min work, 2 min rest) or the massed-training condition (4 min work, 4 min rest). Total training time per session and total rest per session were held constant. Days between sessions (M = 3) were held as consistent as possible

Modified running wheel system: towards improvement of measurements of voluntary running performance in mice.

In this study, we present a modified running wheel system for assessing voluntary running in mice. The system employs a standard 14 cm running wheel mounted on the shaft of an incremental photoelectric rotary encoder, which generates 400 pulses per revolution and supports speeds exceeding 83 revolutions per second, well above the requirements of experiments involving voluntary wheel running in mice. Unlike commonly used devices, the proposed system enables, for the first time, a comprehensive set of measurements: quantification of the period and depth of running speed pulsations; identificatio

Understanding the associations between owner and pet demographics on pet body condition among those experiencing homelessness and housing vulnerability in Canada.

Approximately 35 000 people experience homelessness in some form each night in Canada, with similar rates (approximately 1/200 individuals) among developed countries. Ten to twenty percent of those individuals are pet owners. Animal companionship provides a variety of mental and physical benefits to people who are living homeless or vulnerably housed, but many in the non-vulnerable sector, including veterinary professionals and animal welfare advocates, express concern for the health and welfare of these animals. We describe the demographics of a population of animals owned by individuals expe

Mitochondrial mutations alter endurance exercise response and determinants in mice.

Primary mitochondrial diseases (PMDs) are a heterogeneous group of metabolic disorders that can be caused by hundreds of mutations in both mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA (nDNA) genes. Current therapeutic approaches are limited, although one approach has been exercise training. Endurance exercise is known to improve mitochondrial function in heathy subjects and reduce risk for secondary metabolic disorders such as diabetes or neurodegenerative disorders. However, in PMDs the benefit of endurance exercise is unclear, and exercise might be beneficial for some mitochondrial disorders bu

Rehabilitation and physical therapy for the neurologic veterinary patient.

A comprehensive physiotherapy plan for neurology patients manages pain, prevents secondary complications, and supports the health and function of musculoskeletal tissues during recovery. Neurologically impaired patients range in ability from complete immobility (tetraplegia/paraplegia), partial mobility (tetraparesis/paraparesis), mild ataxia, to pain only. Important considerations for the design of a physiotherapy program include access to the patient, level of staff support, and safety of staff, patient, and client during treatments. A thorough overview of the treatment plan and expected out

A Swimming-Induced Zebrafish Exercise Apparatus for Versatile Training Approaches.

To comprehensively investigate the effects of exercise on health and disease, animal models play a pivotal role. Zebrafish, a widely utilized vertebrate model organism, offers a unique platform for such studies. This study introduced the development of a cost-effective apparatus tailored for zebrafish exercise studies utilizing readily available materials. The device is founded on the principles of a swim tunnel and encompasses a network of pipes and valves linked to a submersible pump. Water flow is meticulously monitored by a sensor and regulated via valves. To assess the apparatus's effecti

Factors associated with completion of Fédération Équestre Internationale endurance rides (2012-2019): Modelling success to promote welfare-oriented decisions in the equestrian sport of endurance.

Endurance riding is a popular equestrian sport organised at the international level by the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI). The sport involves prolonged exercise at speed over significant distances, which puts a substantial load on equine athletes' musculoskeletal systems and metabolism and contributes to the risk of injuries and other veterinary problems. The FEI employs a system of in-ride veterinary inspections aimed at early detection of such problems and elimination of horses unfit to continue in the ride. To date, risk factors for elimination due to irregular gait or metabolic p

Mouse models for metabolic health research: molecular mechanism of exercise effects on health improvement through adipose tissue remodelling.

Exercise provides health benefits to multiple metabolic tissues through complex biological pathways and interactions between organs. However, investigating these complex mechanisms in humans is still limited, making mouse models extremely useful for exploring exercise-induced changes in whole-body metabolism and health. In this review, we focus on gaining a broader understanding of the metabolic phenotypes and molecular mechanisms induced by exercise in mouse models. We first discuss the differences in adaptations induced by aerobic and resistance exercise, and compare voluntary wheel running

Hippocampal Neurogenesis via Light-Intensity Running and Its Mechanism.

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) is the process of generating new neurons in the adult hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG). Exercise promotes AHN and improves hippocampal function through neuroplastic enhancement. The underlying regulatory factors of this process are currently being vigorously studied. However, many previous studies have used a rodent wheel-running model, in which the exercise condition (e.g., volume, intensity, duration) cannot be controlled. In contrast, treadmill running (TR) allows the precise regulation of conditions such that animals can run according to specific experime

Transparent anemone shrimp (Ancylomenes pedersoni) become opaque after exercise and physiological stress in correlation with increased hemolymph perfusion.

Whole-body transparency, an effective camouflage strategy in many aquatic species, can be disrupted by environmental and/or physiological stressors. We found that tail-flip escape responses temporarily disrupt the transparency of the anemone shrimp Ancylomenes pedersoni After as few as three tail flips, the previously transparent abdominal muscle became cloudy. Eliciting additional tail flips to the point of exhaustion (16±1 s.e.m.; n=23) resulted in complete opacity, though the original transparency returned after 20-60 min of inactivity. We hypothesized that an exercise-induced increase in b

Engendering Species-Appropriate Exercise to Attenuate Sarcopenia in Laboratory-Housed Cynomolgus Macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Sarcopenia is the decline in skeletal muscle mass and function with age and is observed in both humans and non-human primates. Sarcopenia progression in humans is highly correlated with various pathologies and mortality risks independent of other risk factors. Laboratory-housed non-human primates that do not engage in adequate physical activity are at higher risk of developing sarcopenia. We devised a simple behavioral task to enhance environmental enrichment and increase physical fitness. An aperture allowed vertical movement between two vertically mounted cages. Despite this arrangement, mal
