The Proteome of a Healthy Human during Physical Activity under Extreme Conditions.

The review examines the new approaches in modern systems biology, in terms of their use for a deeper understanding of the physiological adaptation of a healthy human in extreme environments. Human physiology under extreme conditions of life, or environmental physiology, and systems biology are natural partners. The similarities and differences between the object and methods in systems biology, the OMICs (proteomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics) disciplines, and other related sciences have been studied. The latest data on environmental human physiology obtained using systems biology methods a

Fear in the mind's eye: the neural correlates of differential fear acquisition to imagined conditioned stimuli.

Mental imagery is involved in both the expression and treatment of fear-related disorders such as anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the neural correlates associated with the acquisition and generalization of differential fear conditioning to imagined conditioned stimuli are relatively unknown. In this study, healthy human participants (n = 27) acquired differential fear conditioning to imagined conditioned stimuli paired with a physical unconditioned stimulus (i.e. mild shock), as measured via self-reported fear, the skin conductance response and significant right anterior i

Effect of negative emotions evoked by light, noise and taste on trigeminal thermal sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Patients with migraine often have impaired somatosensory function and experience headache attacks triggered by exogenous stimulus, such as light, sound or taste. This study aimed to assess the influence of three controlled conditioning stimuli (visual, auditory and gustatory stimuli and combined stimuli) on affective state and thermal sensitivity in healthy human participants. METHODS: All participants attended four experimental sessions with visual, auditory and gustatory conditioning stimuli and combination of all stimuli, in a randomized sequence. In each session, the somatosen

A nociceptive stress model of adolescent physical abuse induces contextual fear and cingulate nociceptive neuroplasticities.

Adolescent physical abuse impairs emotional development and evokes cingulate pathologies, but its neuronal and circuit substrates are unknown. Conditioning adolescent rabbits with noxious colorectal distension for only 2 h over 3 weeks simulated the human child abuse in amplitude, frequency, and duration. Thermal withdrawal thresholds were unchanged suggesting that sensitized spinal mechanisms may not be operable. Unchanged weight, stools, colorectal histology, and no evidence of abdominal pain argue against tissue injury or irritable bowel syndrome. Contextual fear was amplified as they avoid

Computational fluid dynamics simulation wall model predicting air temperature of the nasal passage for nonhuman primates.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal passages adjust the temperature of inhaled air to reach the required body temperature for the lungs. The nasal regions of primates including humans are believed to have experienced anatomical modifications that are adaptive to effective conditioning of the atmospheric air in the habitat for a given species. Measurements of the nasal temperature are required to understand the air-conditioning performance for a given species. Unfortunately, repeated direct measurements within the nasal passage have been technically precluded in most nonhuman primates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Co

The Comparative Evaluation of Various Dentin Conditioners with and without Antimicrobial Agent on the Shear Bond Strength of Glass Ionomer Cement to Dentin: An In Vitro Study.

AIM AND BACKGROUND: Glass ionomer cement (GIC) dentin conditioners are considered a useful step in the restorative process, as they increase the bond strength of GIC to dentin. Delivering antimicrobial agents through the dentin conditioner may minimize the impact on the physical properties of GIC. It is not known whether such antibacterial conditioning agents may affect the bond strength of GIC to dentin. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of various dentin conditioners with and without antimicrobial agent on the shear bond strength (SBS) of GIC to dentin. MATER

Thirty-eight years of training distribution in Olympic speed skaters.

UNLABELLED: During the last decade discussion about training-intensity distribution has been an important issue in sports science. Training-intensity distribution has not been adequately investigated in speed skating, a unique activity requiring both high power and high endurance. PURPOSE: To quantify the training-intensity distribution and training hours of successful Olympic speed skaters over 10 Olympiads. METHODS: Olympic-medal-winning trainers/coaches and speed skaters were interviewed and their training programs were analyzed. Each program was qualified and quantified: workout type (sp

Training Load and Acute Performance Decrements Following Different Training Sessions.

PURPOSE: To examine the differences in training load (TL) metrics when quantifying training sessions differing in intensity and duration. The relationship between the TL metrics and the acute performance decrement measured immediately after the sessions was also assessed. METHODS: Eleven male recreational cyclists performed 4 training sessions in a random order, immediately followed by a 3-km time trial (TT). Before this period, participants performed the time TT in order to obtain a baseline performance. The difference in the average power output for the TTs following the training sessions w

Impact of exercise training on cardiovascular disease and risk.

Epidemiological studies in large cohorts support the notion that physical fitness is associated with reduced cardiovascular mortality and hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease. During the last 20 years even the concept of resting inactive after a myocardial infarction has dramatically changed and nowadays patients are mobilized and included into exercise training programs very shortly after the insult. Unfortunately, these beneficial effects of exercise training are independent of the genetic background and are only observed in case the training program is not paused for a longer time.

Optimization of air supply mode of vehicle air conditioning based on digital thermal manikin.

With the rapid development of the automobile industry, the public's demand for automobile diversification is growing steadily.People are no longer satisfied with basic driving convenience, more attention is now directed to the thermal comfort of the cabin. In order to build the relationship between in-vehicle environment parameters and thermal comfort index, the concept of equivalent temperature (Teq) was introduced, and then the DTM reflecting the thermal comfort of the human body was applied to the simulation of ANSYS Fluent. For a specific working condition of the vehicle air conditioning,

The Measurement and Application of Critical Speed and D' in Running: A Scoping Review.

Critical speed (CS) represents the maximal metabolic steady state in running, and D' represents the finite distance capacity above CS. However, there is currently no consensus on the optimal measurement and modelling methods to obtain CS and D' estimates, how CS and D' influence running performance, or how CS and D' have been applied within a training environment. The aims of this scoping review were to determine the specific protocols and modelling methods that have been implemented to quantify CS and D' in running; the deterministic potential of CS and D' for running race performance; and th

International consensus on the definition of functional training: Modified e-Delphi method.

The inconsistency and disparities in existing functional training definitions have led to confusion when explaining the concept and its potential. The wide range of interpretations suggests that any training approach could be deemed functional, thereby diminishing the significance of the term and significantly limiting its understanding and application. Thus, this paper aimed to develop the first consensual definition of functional training using an international e-Delphi method. From a panel of 31 experts initially selected, 13 participated in the consensus. The panel presented the following

The Relationship Between the Moderate-Heavy Boundary and Critical Speed in Running.

PURPOSE: Training characteristics such as duration, frequency, and intensity can be manipulated to optimize endurance performance, with an enduring interest in the role of training-intensity distribution to enhance training adaptations. Training intensity is typically separated into 3 zones, which align with the moderate-, heavy-, and severe-intensity domains. While estimates of the heavy- and severe-intensity boundary, that is, the critical speed (CS), can be derived from habitual training, determining the moderate-heavy boundary or first threshold (T1) requires testing, which can be costly a
