Non-invasive brain stimulation techniques have been used for decades to study brain function and for the treatment of various neurological disease. These techniques involve the passage of electrical current or magnetic field in a controlled manner to a targeted brain area. Recently, experimental studies explored the application of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for the improvement of physical performance in healthy individuals. In this chapter we reviewed and analyzed the current scientific literature, highlighted methodological limitations and also suggested possible neurophys

Electrical recording from small twigs of nerve in a tortoise showed that olfactory, vomeronasal, and trigeminal receptors in the nose are responsive to various odorants. No one kind of receptor was most sensitive to all odorants. For controlled stimulation, odorant was caused to appear in a stream of gas already flowing through the nose. Of the parameters definable at the naris, temperature, relative humidity, and nature of inert gas had little effect on olfactory responses to amyl acetate, whereas odorant species, odorant concentration, and volume flow rate effectively determined the response

Large-area bone loss from disease, trauma, or congenital defects requires surgical procedures and bone grafting. Alveolar bone loss from severe periodontal disease and non-unions often demands immediate grafting. Treating large alveolar bone defects using grafts and substitutes is challenging due to the complex oral environment, infection risks, and unstable graft properties, which may compromise strength and bioactivity. Successful grafts must promote vasculature development and osteogenesis while maintaining mechanical stability at the graft site. Current bone graft substitutes are inadequat

Optogenetic approaches enable spatiotemporal control of signaling proteins, yet their integration with microfluidic assays to study confined cell migration remains challenging. Herein, we present a protocol for the optogenetic activation of PI3K/Akt signaling in confined cells. We detail procedures for applying stimulation to induce localized Akt activation at the cell's leading edge. This protocol enables real-time manipulation of subcellular signaling dynamics during confined migration. For additional information on the use of this protocol, please refer to Lee et al.1.

Physical exercise is known to activate the sympathetic nervous system, which influences the production of saliva from salivary glands. Our examination of saliva collected from highly trained athletes before and after a number of physical competititions showed an increase in the secretion of S-type cystatins and cystatin C as a subacute response to aerobic and anaerobic exercise. The elevation in salivary cystatins was transient and the recovery time course differed from that of amylase and other salivary proteins. An in vitro assay was developed based on a cell line from a human submandibular

We report about a new type of physical therapy which can be used in patients with joint immobility secondary to by chronic venous insufficiency. Biomechanical stimulation therapy (BMS) uses mechanical vibration of standardised frequencies from 18-35 Hz spectrum to expose the feet and legs to longitudinal mechanical stimuli. Therapeutic benefit and clinical improvement can be achieved after a short period of treatment. We describe a 76 year old female patient suffering from both impaired motion and recurrent venous ulceration due to chronic venous insufficiency. After 10 days treatment with BMS

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive malignant brain tumor. Despite new knowledges on the genetic characteristics, conventional therapy for GBM, tumor resection followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy using temozolomide is limited in efficacy due to high rate of recurrence. GBM is indeed one of the most complex and difficult cancer to treat mainly due to its highly invasive properties and the standard treatments are thus rarely curative. Major challenges in the treatment of GBM are the limitation of irreversible brain damage, the infiltrative part of the tumor which is the ul

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) devices apply direct current through electrodes on the scalp with the intention to modulate brain function for experimental or clinical purposes. All tDCS devices include a current controlled stimulator, electrodes that include a disposable electrolyte, and headgear to position the electrodes on the scalp. Transcranial direct current stimulation dose can be defined by the size and position of electrodes and the duration and intensity of current applied across electrodes. Electrode design and preparation are important for reproducibility and tolera

A combination of physiotherapeutic methods for neurorehabilitative treatment has been developed and applied to the treatment of 576 patients with neurosurgical problems including the loss of brain functions as a sequel to nervous system lesions of traumatic, vascular, and other origin. Methodologically, this complex is adapted to the level and extent of the lesion and the character of regeneration of the nervous tissues. It implies many-level stimulation of neuroregeneration by syndromically and pathogenetically substantiated application of physical factors in the early post-injury and postope

Physical violence is widely considered to result from action carried out with the intention of causing injury; that is, from aggression. However, the "hypothesis" of aggression is inapplicable in all but a few instances as well as inappropriate for many destructive, rage-associated responses directed at inanimate objects. This paper outlines a new perspective on physical violence, reinterpreting many behaviors hitherto labeled aggressive as stimulation-seeking behaviors (SSBs) above an arbitrary level of intensity. It is further proposed that: 1) physical violence is a by-product of SSB, drive

Authors study forty eight children with severe lineal growth retardation. The more frequent causes of a stunted growth were ruled out previously (systemic and chronic diseases, metabolic disorders, genetic alterations, etc.). As a screening test, physical exercise was used to detect growth hormone (HGH) deficiency. A normal response was considered when HGH levels rose more than 7,0 ng./ml. after 20 minutes of continuous exercise. In those cases in which this level was not attained. insulin-hypoglycemia alone and followed by insulin plus an arginine infusion were used as stimuli, to confirm the

Dual chamber DDD pacing is fully physiologic when chronotropic response of sinus node to exercise is normal and when retrograde ventriculo-atrial conduction is absent. Comparison of results from exercise test with increasing work load showed that atrial-triggered ventricular pacing provides a significant functional benefit (delta VO2 15%) P less than 0.01, if compared with fixed rate ventricular pacing. The benefit is closely related with the amount of sinus rate increase during exercise. In patients with sinus node syndrome the atrial triggered ventricular pacing rate did not show significant

Oral dryness causes significant health problems both functional (difficulty speaking, chewing and swallowing) and structural in teeth (increased number of infections) and oral mucosa. The main objective of this study is to show an alternative treatment to help stimulate the salivary secretion thus improving the quality of life of the patient. In this study, a salivary stimulation equipment using vibrotactile stimuli is shown. The system has been placed bilaterally in the parotid glands and assessed the efficacy of the salivary secretion by sialometry before and after the stimulation. The new p

The review discusses the modern possibilities of non-drug rehabilitation of patients with osteoporosis. Osteopenia (osteoporosis) and osteoporosis-associated bone fractures are a global public health problem, and an intensive search is undergoing for new methods of treatment, prevention, diagnosis and screening of this disease. Innovative technologies for influencing bone remodeling using vibration training seem to be an effective method that allows you to simultaneously positively affect maintaining bone density, increasing muscle strength and improving coordination, especially in elderly pat

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is used to manage treatment of neuropathic pain to reduce pain and hyperalgesia and to improve activity. Prior studies using animal models of neuropathic pain have shown that SCS reduces hyperalgesia; however, it is unclear whether SCS affects physical activity. Therefore, we tested whether nerve injury (spared nerve injury [SNI] model) reduced physical activity levels, and whether SCS could restore these decreased activity levels. We tested whether SCS given over a long duration (6 hr daily for 3 months) remained effective. We compared SNI with uninjured controls

Physical exercise can minimize dysfunction and optimize functional motor recovery after stroke by modulating cortical plasticity. However, the limitation of physical exercise is that large amounts of time and effort are necessary to significantly improve motor function, and even then, substantial exercise may not be sufficient to normalize the observed improvements. Thus, interventions that could be used to strengthen physical exercise-induced neuroplasticity may be valuable in treating hemiplegia after stroke. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation seems to be a viable strategy for enha

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence of how metabolic syndrome (MS) affects sympathovagal balance responses to acute physical effort (APE) and autonomic stimulation (AS). This study aimed to evaluate the heart rate variability (HRV) responses to the combined APE and AS challenges.
METHODS: Fourteen subjects (8 men; 49.15 ± 8.67 years) divided into two groups: 7 healthy volunteers [control group (CG)] and 7 patients with MS. Sympathovagal balance [low frequency (LF)/high frequency (HF) ratio] was accessed by HRV through the beat-to-beat heart rate (HR) electrocardiogram. Other variables analyz
