Claim Costs, Musculoskeletal Health, and Work Exposure in Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, and Occupational Therapist Assistants: A Comparison Among Long-Term Care Jobs.

BACKGROUND: Patient/resident-handling tasks are physically demanding and associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among nursing personnel. The routine performance of such tasks by physical therapists and occupational therapists during treatment can cause similar problems. OBJECTIVE: This study characterized the magnitude of MSDs and the risk factors for MSDs in physical therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapist assistants, and occupational therapist assistants (collectively called "therapy personnel" for this study) and compared them with those of other nursing home work

Partnering With Physical Therapists and Speech-Language Pathologists in Early Childhood to Promote Access to Assistive Technology for a Child With Medical Complexity.

Noah is an 18-month-old boy with Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, diagnosed at 3 months through genetic testing that revealed a cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein (CREBBP) variant. At 7 months, Noah was socially engaged, smiling and responding to familiar caregivers, but his motor differences were evident: limited head control, frequent fisting of his hands, difficulty grasping objects because of syndactyly, the need for assistance with rolling, and difficulty tolerating time on his stomach.By 9 months, Noah was referred to Part C Early Intervention services and began oc

The evolving role of physical therapists in the long-term management of chronic low back pain: longitudinal care using assisted self-management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal studies have shown that the symptoms of chronic low back pain (CLBP) will follow an episodic trajectory characterized by periods of high and low pain intensity that can persist for many years. There is a growing belief that the contemporary approach of limiting physical therapy to short, but intense courses of treatment for (CLBP) may be sub-optimal because these limited "windows" of clinical care are not congruent with the natural history of this condition. Recent research has suggested that people with CLBP undergo substantial, and individualized long-term variations

Assessing Human-Human Kinematics for the Implementation of Robot-Assisted Physical Therapy in Humanoids: A Pilot Study.

The development of humanoids with bimanual manipulator arms may facilitate assistive robots to perform physical therapy with older adults living at home. As we assume the human-human interaction to be the gold standard of physical therapy, we propose a kinematics analysis to derive guidelines for implementing physical therapy assisted by humanoids. Therefore, a pilot study was carried out involving three physical therapists and two participants acting as exemplary patients. The study analyzes the therapists' movement strategy, including the position and orientation of the therapists' bodies in

Intellectual Humility: How Recognizing the Fallibility of Our Beliefs and Owning Our Limits May Create a Better Relationship Between the Physical Therapy Profession and Disability.

UNLABELLED: Despite the many advancements over the history of the profession, physical therapy remains in a somewhat paradoxical relationship with disability. The physical therapist profession values disability as diversity but continues to focus on the normalization of body functions as the primary means to promote functionality in people with disability. This focus, consistent with a medicalized view of disability, may prevent physical therapists from empowering individuals with disability to explore alternative, yet effective, perceptual-motor strategies to achieve their functional goals. Diagnostic imaging and differential diagnosis in 2 case reports.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective resident's case reports. BACKGROUND: In today's healthcare setting, it is important for physical therapists to recognize when diagnostic imaging is necessary--as well as know how to interpret the results of these tests--to assist in the clinical decision-making process. Two cases are presented that illustrate how a physical therapist, credentialed to request and review diagnostic imaging, effectively and efficiently utilized multiple forms of diagnostic imaging to assist in his differential diagnosis and clinical decision making. DIAGNOSIS: The first case report d

Shoulder-wearable soft robot for assisting older adults in scapular stretching.

We propose a wearable soft robot that assists with individualized scapula adduction and abduction for thoracic stretching in respiratory rehabilitation. Although thoracic stretching is known to be effective for respiratory rehabilitation, the range of motion of older adult patients narrows with age, and long-term external aid by physical therapists is required. The proposed robot consists of a soft and shoulder-wearable brace and cable-pulling mechanism to apply rotational torque on shoulders, resulting in stretching the thorax and scapulae. We designed the pulling mechanism by modeling the hu
