Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterized by generalized chronic musculoskeletal pain, hyperalgesia in specific points, and psychosomatic symptoms, such as fatigue, sleep disturbances (waking unrefreshed), anxiety, depression, cognitive dysfunction, headache, and gastrointestinal disorders. Investigations with non-pharmacological therapies, focused on physical therapy, have increased in recent years as alternative therapies for the treatment of fibromyalgia. The purpose of this review is to summarize the main physical therapy modalities used to treat fibromyalgia.

BackgroundCarpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a frequently encountered neuropathic disorder in which the median nerve becomes compressed within the carpal tunnel.ObjectiveThe present study aimed to investigate the effects of two physiotherapeutic interventions on the median nerve flattening ratio (MNFR) and the pain severity in the CTS.MethodsThis study included 58 patients with stage I-III CTS, divided into two groups. The ESWT group received five sessions of extracorporeal shock wave therapy over a three-week period, whereas the paraffin group underwent ten paraffin therapy sessions delivered fi

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor muscle physical therapy is recommended in clinical guidelines for women with provoked vestibulodynia (PVD). Including isolated or combined treatment modalities, physical therapy is viewed as an effective first-line intervention, yet no systematic review concerning the effectiveness of physical therapy has been conducted.
AIM: To systematically appraise the current literature on the effectiveness of physical therapy modalities for decreasing pain during intercourse and improving sexual function in women with PVD.
METHODS: A systematic literature search using PubMed,

The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the efficacy of kinesio tape and physical therapy modalities in patients with shoulder impingement syndrome. Patients (n = 55) were treated with kinesio tape (n = 30) three times by intervals of 3 days or a daily program of local modalities (n = 25) for 2 weeks. Response to treatment was evaluated with the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scale. Patients were questioned for the night pain, daily pain, and pain with motion. Outcome measures except for the Disability of Arm, Shoulder, and Hand scale were assessed at baseline, first, and

BACKGROUND: Secondary lymphedema after head and neck cancer treatment is a serious complication and its management can be a challenge. The purpose of this study was to verify which physical therapy modalities were applied in the treatment of head and neck lymphedema through a retrospective analysis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was developed, based on the analysis of medical records of 32 patients treated in the physiotherapy outpatient department of the Brazilian Institute of Cancer Control (IBCC).
RESULTS: The physiotherapy included manual lymphatic drainage, massage, exercises, patient

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT) and noninvasive modalities can be more safe and available treatments for vaginal laxity (VL) with less risk of postsurgical complications.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this review is to define the concepts of PFPT and noninvasive modalities, examine the evidence supporting those modalities as a treatment for VL, and evaluate their effectiveness.
METHODS: Between 2002 and 2023, clinical studies including women diagnosed with VL were examined in the Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and PubMed databases. Exclusion criteria included studi

ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of kinesio taping (KT) treatments and conventional physical therapy (PT) modalities that are applied to reduce pain and improve physical movements and functions of patients with sub acromial impingement syndrome (SIS).Materials and methodsForty patients were randomly divided into two equal groups. The first group was assigned KT plus home exercise program (HEP) for 15 days. The second group was given 15 sessions of PT and HEP. BACKGROUND: Tinnitus can be related to many different aetiologies such as hearing loss or a noise trauma, but it can also be related to the somatosensory system of the cervical spine, called cervicogenic somatic tinnitus (CST). Case studies suggest a positive effect of cervical spine treatment on tinnitus complaints in patients with CST, but no experimental studies are available.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of a multimodal cervical physical therapy treatment on tinnitus complaints in patients with CST.
DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial.
PATIENTS: Patients with a combination of se

BACKGROUND: The use of physical therapy modalities, especially high intensity laser therapy (HILT), for individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is still controversial.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of HILT to other physical therapy modalities on symptoms and function in individuals with KOA.
METHODS: Six databases (PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EBSCO, and PEDro) were searched in March 2022. Included studies were randomized controlled trials involving HILT conducted on individuals with KOA. The end-trial weighted mean difference (WMD) and standard deviations (SD) wi

Amidst the burgeoning field of cancer nanomedicine, dense extracellular matrices and anomalous vascular structures in the tumor microenvironment (TME) present substantial physical barriers to effective therapeutic delivery. These physical barriers hinder the optimal bioavailability of nanomedicine. Here, we propose a pioneering dual-modal strategy for overcoming physical barriers via soft organosilica nanocapsules (SMONs). Hyaluronidase-modified flexible spheres work by degrading the extracellular matrix and utilizing their flexible characteristics to enhance penetration into deeper layers. Co

BACKGROUND: Peripheral vascular disease (PVD) causes significant pain and disability in patients. Current conservative treatment for PVD is often limited to physical exercise. However, several recent studies have investigated the effects of physical therapy modalities in patients with PVD.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) aimed to compare the effects of different physical therapy modalities and physical exercise in improving the walking function of patients with PVD.

A broad spectrum of physical therapy exercise programs provides symptom relief and functional benefit for patients with knee OA. Manual physical therapy, including tailored exercise programs provide relatively higher level benefit that persists to one year. It is currently unknown if there are important differences in the effects of different manual physical therapy techniques for patients with knee OA and there are virtually no studies comparing manual physical therapy and electrotherapy modalities. The aim of the study was to compare long-term results between three treatment groups (mobiliza

Physical therapy modalities play an essential role in the treatment of osteonecrosis and bone marrow edema. In addition to an accurate diagnosis, it is essential to understand the pathogenesis of the disease in order to define relevant physiological, cellular and biochemical targets. After careful consideration of efficacy and side effects, these therapies can be used both as adjunctive measures and as stand-alone treatments to prevent disease progression. In particular, shock wave and magnetic field therapies show promising results both clinically and in ongoing trials. In addition, in the ac

INTRODUCTION: Knee stiffness following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a common complication, especially in obese patients. The initial, non-operative treatments for this complication includes splinting and physical therapy. If these measures fail, manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) or surgical exploration can be considered to restore range of motion (ROM). However, it is generally desirable to avoid these procedures. For these reasons, newer physical therapy protocols have been developed. However, it is unknown whether these protocols are efficacious for obese patients. Therefore, the purpo

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether kinesiophobia, anxiety, and depression mediate the effects of therapeutic aquatic exercise (TAE) versus physical therapy modalities (PTMs) on pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP).
METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of data derived from a previously conducted randomized controlled trial, applying mediation analysis to explore potential psychological mediators. A total of 113 participants received 60-min sessions of TAE or PTMs twice weekly for 3 months. The Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) and the numeric rating
