Health Policy Advocacy Engagement: A Physician Survey.

PURPOSE: Physicians can play an important role in shaping health policy. The purpose of this study was to determine characteristics of physicians participating in health policy and barriers and facilitators to their advocacy. METHODS: A modified previously validated survey instrument was mailed to physicians affiliated with the University of Wisconsin on October 12, 2018. Three follow-up emails were sent, and the response period closed January 30, 2019. Twenty-eight items were included in the survey tool. Respondents were considered highly engaged if they: (a) reported involvement in predeter

Pushing for partnership: physician engagement and resistance in primary care renewal.

PURPOSE: Healthcare policymakers and managers struggle to engage private physicians, who tend to view themselves as independent of the system, in new models of primary care. The purpose of this paper is to examine this issue through a social identity lens. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Through in-depth interviews with 33 decision-makers and 31 fee-for-service family physicians, supplemented by document review and participant observation, the authors studied a Canadian province's early efforts to engage physicians in primary care renewal initiatives. FINDINGS: Recognizing that the existing phy

Joy in Medicine Initiative: Bridging Physicians' Engagement Gap.

A 2023 workforce engagement survey of employees at the Houston Methodist Physician Organization (HMPO) identified a widening engagement gap between physician and nonphysician staff members. A greater number of physicians reported disengagement, mirroring a national trend in declining engagement scores, than other employees. Recognizing that low levels of physician engagement can negatively impact physician retention, patient care, and organizational success, in 2024, HMPO launched a focused Joy in Medicine Initiative (JIMI) aimed at bridging the engagement gap. The JIMI workplan, led by the Of

Building a System to Engage and Sustain Research Careers for Physicians.

There are increasing needs for physician-investigators to translate the rapid expansion of knowledge, technology/interventions, and big data into the clinical realm at a time of increasing age-related disabilities and communicable diseases. Yet, the number of physician-investigators has continued to decline, and only a small number of medical school graduates in the United States are actively engaged in research. This problem may be particularly pronounced in small- and medium-sized academic institutions due to more limited educational and mentoring infrastructure. Neither efforts by the feder

Engaging Physicians and Systems to Improve Hepatitis C Virus Testing in Baby Boomers.

Approximately three million people in the United States have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus (HCV), with two-thirds of these having chronic HCV infection. Baby boomers (those born 1945-1965) have nearly five times the prevalence of HCV infection compared with other age groups. Despite clinical practice guidelines that recommend HCV testing in baby boomers, the testing rates remain low. We developed and tested a multilevel intervention to increase orders for HCV testing that included integrated clinical decision support within the electronic health record (EHR) and a physician education s

Perspective: delivering effective and engaging continuing medical education on physicians' disruptive behavior.

Education about physicians' disruptive behavior is relevant for practicing physicians, who must demonstrate competence in professionalism for maintenance of certification. In addition, physicians need to know about newer regulatory standards that define disruptive behavior and mandated processes for dealing with such behavior, as health care organizations are now charged with having formal policies addressing this issue. There is a growing literature about dealing with disruptive behavior, but it has not addressed education, including continuing medical education (CME), aimed at reducing or pr

Diagnosis and management of bispecific T cell-engaging antibody toxicity: A primer for emergency physicians.

BACKGROUND: T-cell-engaging bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are a newer type of immunotherapy designed to boost T-cell cytotoxicity. They are increasingly used in cancer treatment, with drugs currently being tested and authorized for treating both liquid and solid tumors. It's becoming more likely that emergency physicians and other acute care practitioners will treat patients experiencing adverse events related to bispecific antibodies, as these drugs are regularly given in the outpatient setting. Currently, BsAb-associated side effects are not routinely taught to Emergency Medicine residents,

Engagement between patients with obesity and osteoarthritis and primary care physicians: a cross-sectional survey.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Obesity is a major risk factor for development and worsening of osteoarthritis (OA). Managing obesity with effective weight loss strategies can improve patients' OA symptoms, functionality, and quality of life. However, little is known about the clinical journey of patients with both OA and obesity. This study aimed to map the medical journey of patients with OA and obesity by characterizing the roles of health care providers, influential factors, and how treatment decisions are made. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was completed with 304 patients diagnosed with OA

The urban and community health pathway: preparing socially responsive physicians through community-engaged learning.

One of five options for the new required Medical College of Wisconsin Pathways program, the Urban and Community Health Pathway (UCHP), links training with community needs and assets to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide effective care in urban, underserved settings; promote community health; and reduce health disparities. Students spend at least 10 hours per month on pathway activities: 4 hours of core material delivered through readings, didactics, case discussions, and site visits; and at least 6 hours of experiential noncore activities applying core compet

Engaging primary care physicians is critical in the screening and diagnosis of colorectal cancer at safety-net hospital systems.

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians (PCP) play a key role in offering colorectal cancer (CRC) screenings, particularly amongst underserved populations. Given potential delays in or omission of CRC screening in the absence of a PCP, we aimed to determine stage of CRC at diagnosis in an underserved population. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at two Los Angeles County safety-net hospitals. Inclusion criteria were a CRC diagnosis between 2018 and 2021 and age between 50 and 75 years at diagnosis time. The primary outcome was the cancer stage at diagnosis. RESULTS: A total of

Global, multilingual, physician-invited, patient-completed digital registry enabling pre-consultation engagement and supporting more efficient care pathways in venous disease.

Lower limb venous diseases are prevalent chronic conditions that require standardized, efficient, and patient-centered clinical assessment across diverse healthcare settings. Despite increasing digitalization of healthcare, scalable multilingual digital infrastructures capable of supporting standardized pre-consultation data collection and physician-validated real-world evidence generation remain limited. We conducted a global, cross-sectional observational study, using an innovative physician-invited/patient-completed digital registry, designed to enable pre-clinical engagement. The registry
