Night Physician-Nurse Collaboration: Developing the Scale of Physicians' Difficulties and Exploring Related Factors in Acute Care Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Responding to inpatient deterioration is less favorable at night than during the day, and this may be related to barriers in collaboration between physicians and nurses. However, there had been no way to assess the problem. This study aimed to develop a scale for physicians to measure difficulties in nighttime collaboration with nurses in response to deteriorating inpatients and to identify factors associated with the developed scale scores. METHODS: We developed a draft scale of Nighttime Collaboration Difficulties between Nurses and Physicians for Physicians (NCDNP-P) based on k

Knowledge and Practices of Physicians and Nurses Related to Urine Cultures in Catheterized Patients: An Assessment of Adherence to IDSA Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: A positive urine culture often drives initiation of antimicrobials even in the absence of symptoms. Our objectives were to evaluate the knowledge and practice patterns related to ordering urine cultures in patients with indwelling urinary catheters. METHODS: We performed chart reviews of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) at our academic health care system between October 1, 2015, and September 30, 2017, to assess practice patterns related to the assessment of potential CAUTIs. Following this, we surveyed physicians and nurses about indications for ordering urin

Healthcare-Related Regret among Nurses and Physicians Is Associated with Self-Rated Insomnia Severity: A Cross-Sectional Study.

To examine the association between healthcare-related regrets and sleep difficulties among nurses and physicians, we surveyed 240 nurses and 220 physicians at the University Hospitals of Geneva. Regret intensity and regret coping were measured using validated scales. Sleep difficulties were measured using the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and an additional question assessed the frequency of sleeping pill use. After controlling for sex, profession, years of experience, rate of employment, and depression as well as for all other regret-related variables, the following variables remained signifi

[Granting extended responsibilities to nurses and pharmacists--is it desirable and possible?].

UNLABELLED: In the recent past, changes have occurred that have increased the overall burden on health services, particularly in the community. It has also become apparent that Israel stands at the threshold of a significant doctor deficit which will become a problem within a decade. The first signs are already noticeable, in a shortfall of residents in some specialties. The possibility of granting certain extended responsibilities to nurses and pharmacists, could reduce potential distress, and improve the quality of care, its availability and patient satisfaction. Hostile clinician behaviours in the nursing work environment and implications for patient care: a mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Although there is a sizeable body of evidence regarding the nature of hostile behaviours among clinicians in the nursing workplace, what is less clear is the nature of the relationship between these behaviours and patient care. To inform the development of appropriate intervention strategies we examine the level of evidence detailing the relationships between hostile clinician behaviours and patient care. METHODS: Published qualitative and quantitative studies that examined hostile clinician behaviours and patient care were included. Quality assessment, data extraction and analysi

Practice Environment and Job Outcomes Among Primary Care Nurse Practitioners Caring for Patients With Dementia.

BACKGROUND: As the number of Americans living with dementia increases, healthcare delivery systems face increasing pressure to provide dementia-care services to improve patient and family outcomes. The primary care nurse practitioner (NP) workforce is critical to dementia care; however, many NPs practice in environments that lack organizational attributes needed to maximize their contributions. We examined the associations between the NP practice environment and key indicators of workforce sustainability-burnout, job satisfaction, and intent to leave. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We conducted a

Differences between physicians' and nurse practitioners' viewpoints on reasons for clozapine underprescription.

INTRODUCTION: Clozapine (CLZ) is the only proven effective therapy for treatment-resistant schizophrenia, but it is underutilized across the globe. Previous findings suggest a lack of experience with CLZ prescription and concerns about CLZ's pharmacological characteristics are the prime reasons for CLZ underutilization. To our knowledge, it is currently unknown whether the reasons for underutilization and suggested solutions differ between physicians and nurse practitioners. Such differences are important as nurse practitioners are becoming increasingly involved in prescribing CLZ. METHODS: T

Sister Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse, and treatment of poliomyelitis victims.

PURPOSE: To analyze the strategies that Elizabeth Kenny, an Australian nurse, used when trying to obtain medical endorsement for an innovation that was not based on knowledge of pathology, but was empirically demonstrated. SIGNIFICANCE: When faced with the need to "Do the best you can with the symptoms presenting themselves," Kenny used keen observation to develop a new treatment for poliomyelitis in the early 1900s. Her innovation was to use hot packs to relieve muscle spasms in people with early symptoms of poliomyelitis when orthodox medical treatment included use of splints or casts to im

Workplace Environment and Psychological Distress of Nurses and Nursing Assistants During COVID-19.

Registered nurses (RNs) and nursing assistants (NAs) play critical roles during crises. Understanding how the perceived work environment affects psychological distress among these healthcare workers is essential for developing interventions that support mental health and organizational outcomes. This study examined the association between perceived workplace environment and psychological distress, including stress, depressive, anxiety, and somatic symptoms, among inpatient RNs and NAs during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 84 RNs and NAs employed at a large a
