Women physicians and stress.

Most women physicians enjoy better than average physical health and lead satisfying and productive lives. However, higher than average rates of depression, anxiety, marital problems, and substance abuse have been reported by some, but not all, authors. This quantitative survey of 196 women physicians and qualitative focus groups with 48 other women physicians was conducted to determine perceptions of their health, stress, satisfaction, knowledge, and abuse rates in medical practice. Eight specialties plus family practice physicians participated. The average age was 44.1 years (SD 8.8, range 23

[Mentorship to support career development among women physicians].

Mentorship is a critical mechanism for the growth and career development of young physicians and plays an especially decisive role in addressing the "leaky pipeline" faced by women in medicine. In this article, we first clarify the distinctions between four forms of support-mentor, sponsor, ally, and coach-and review initiatives at the levels of professional societies, institutions, and individuals. We then present concrete examples from Japan: the Japanese Data Center for Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation, which combines a registry scientist training program with flexible work arrangements;

How physicians treat mentally distressed men and women.

There is speculation that women receive different medical care than men because physicians have stereotyped views about women's symptoms and treatment preferences. This paper asks if men and women who visit physicians for mental distress receive comparable medical care and, if not, whether medical considerations or psychosocial ones explain the differences. Data are from a large national survey of ambulatory care visits in the United States. We find that women and men are equally likely to report mental distress as their main problem to physicians. Physicians determine that distressed men have

"Women's work": Gender and the physician workforce.

Historically, the physician professional identity and the organizational structure of Western medicine have been defined by masculine norms such as authority and assertiveness. The past five decades have seen a rapid shift in the demographics of attendees as medical schools, with equal numbers of women and men matriculants for nearly twenty years. Gender as a social, cultural, and structural variable continues to influence the physician workforce. The entry of women into medicine, has had far reaching effects on the expectations of patients, the interactions of physicians with other members of

Cancer screening in women by internal medicine resident physicians.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that women may not have consistent cancer surveillance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of internal medicine resident physicians' screening methods for breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer of women aged 50 or older. RESULTS: Resident physicians did breast examinations in 39.1%, mammography in 37.3%, Pap smears in 32.7%, rectal examinations in 37.3%, fecal occult blood testing in 39.1%, and flexible sigmoidoscopy in 11.8% of the women. They instructed 3.6% to do breast self-examination. There was no statistically significant difference in the brea

Women patients' preference for women physicians is a barrier to colon cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: The preference of women patients for women physicians has been shown in many specialties. Women patients awaiting a lower endoscopy have been shown to have a preference for women endoscopists. The reasons for this preference and the strength of this preference have not been studied in the primary care setting. METHODS: A questionnaire was given to female patients who were waiting for primary care appointments at 4 offices. Patients reported sociodemographic characteristics, experiences with colorectal cancer (CRC), barriers to CRC screening, gender preference of their physician, t

The effect of postpartum depression on women's consultations with physicians.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a well-known phenomenon that occurs in about 10% of births and affects the quality of life of the mother as well as the family. As in other cases of depression, under-diagnosis of PPD may keep patients from getting proper care and increase their physical and emotional distress. OBJECTIVES: To identify patients with PPD and to describe their consultation patterns with primary care physicians for themselves and their babies. METHODS: Using a telephone survey and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale questionnaire we identified PPD in a sample of women wh

IUD use in France: women's and physician's perspectives.

OBJECTIVE: While the intra-uterine device (IUD) is the second most popular contraceptive method in France, its use remains low among women most at risk of unintended pregnancies. Acknowledging the conjoint role of women and physicians in contraceptive decision making, we investigate the determinants of IUD use and IUD recommendations from the user and prescriber perspectives. STUDY DESIGN: Data are drawn from 2 national probability surveys (population-based and physician surveys) on sexual and reproductive health in France. The population based survey comprised 3,563 women ages 15-49 at risk

Acceptance of tamoxifen chemoprevention by physicians and women at risk.

BACKGROUND: In the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) P-1 trial, tamoxifen was shown to reduce breast carcinoma risk by 49% in high-risk women. The purpose of the current study was to identify factors associated with being offered, and accepting, tamoxifen chemoprevention. METHODS: The records of 219 women who sought risk evaluation after the publication of the NSABP P-1 trial between September 1998 and October 2002 were reviewed. Risk was calculated using the model of either Gail et al. or Claus et al. The impact of individual risk factors on the offering and accepta

Women's expectations of physicians in sexual health concerns.

This study surveyed 56 women to assess their expectations for the primary care physician to inquire about sexual concerns and to diagnose and treat sexual problems. The study indicates that the physician is the professional most frequently consulted about sexual concerns and that patients expect even more leadership from the physician in raising the issue of sexual health. Women look for empathy, warmth, confidentiality, and professional competence in discussions with their doctor about sexual matters; and they are open to referrals for treatment of sexual problems and physician-sponsored sex

Women physicians underrepresented in American Academy of Neurology recognition awards.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate representation by gender among recipients of physician recognition awards presented by the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). METHODS: We analyzed lists of individual recipients over the 63-year history of the AAN recognition awards. Included were awards intended primarily for physician recipients that recognized a body of work over the course of a career. The primary outcome measures were total numbers and proportions of men and women physician award recipients. RESULTS: During the period studied, the proportion of women increased from 18% (1996) to 31.5% (2016)

Self-reported depression and suicide attempts among U.S. women physicians.

OBJECTIVE: Studies examining suicide rates for U.S. women physicians and other U.S. women have found odds ratios as high as 4 to 1. Although such reports are controversial and are based on small groups (N = 17 to 49 suicides), they are often cited as evidence of a high prevalence of psychopathology among women physicians. METHOD: The authors used the results of the Women Physicians' Health Study (N = 4,501), a large, nationally distributed questionnaire, to assess the lifetime prevalence of self-identified depression and suicide attempts among U.S. women physicians. RESULTS: An estimated 1.5

U.S. Women Physicians' personal and clinical breast cancer screening practices.

Little is known about predictors of physicians' personal or clinical compliance with breast cancer screening recommendations. We explored this in 4501 respondents to the Women Physicians' Health Study, a questionnaire-based study of a representative sample of U.S. women M. D.s. Overall, 21% of women physicians performed breast self-examination (BSE) at least monthly, about two thirds had received a clinical breast examination (CBE) within the last year, and 85% had received one within the last 2 years. Of those <40 years old, 14% had received a mammogram in the past year, as had 42% of those 4
