Study on the chemical composition of the stems and leaves of Phytolacca americana.

The stems and leaves of Phytolacca americana were phytochemically investigated, leading to the isolation and identification of nine compounds. Two new compounds, 6,7-dimethoxy-4β-hydroxypeltogynane (1) and phytolaccamide A (2) were characterized, with compound 1 assigned an absolute configuration of 2R, 3S, 4S. Compounds 1, 3 and 4 represrent rare peltogynane-type structures. Preliminary in vitro antibacterial and antifungal screening showed no obvious inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC 29213 or Candida albicans ATCC 10231 at 100 μM.

Manganese uptake and interactions with cadmium in the hyperaccumulator--Phytolacca Americana L.

In the present study, the accumulation of Mn and other metals by Phytolacca Americana L. from contaminated soils in Hunan Province, South China, was investigated. Results showed that the average concentrations of Mn in the leaves and roots reached 2198 and 80.4 mg kg(-1) (dry weight), respectively, with a maximum 13,400 mg kg(-1) in the leaves. A significant correlation was found between Mn concentrations in the plant leaves and those in the corresponding soils. Hydroponic experiments were also conducted to study the Cd uptake ability and interactions between Mn and Cd in the plant. It was fou

[Effects of processing on toxicity and pharmacological action of Phytolacca americana L].

The experimental results have shown that the toxicity of variously processed Phytolacca americana is lower than that of the original rude drug, i.e. the local irritability tends to decrease by 16.7-83.3%; LD50 to elevate by 1.66-10.47 times; expectoration to increase by 1.10-1.57 times; but diuresis mostly to decrease by 16.0-45.0%. This reveals that the main object of processing Phytolacca americana is to lower toxicity, increase expectoration and relieve diuresis to reduce fluid retention.

Enhancement of heparin and heparin disaccharide absorption by the Phytolacca americana saponins.

We studied the effects of phytolaccosides, saponins from Phytolacca americana, on the intestinal absorption of heparin in vitro and in vivo. The absorption enhancing activity of these compounds (phytolaccosides B, D2, E, F, G and I) was determined by changes in transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and the transport amount of heparin disaccharide, the major repeating unit of heparin, across Caco-2 cell monolayers. With the exception of phytolaccoside G, all of them decreased TEER values and increased the permeability in a dose-dependent and time-dependent manner. In vitro, phytolaccosid

Biological and antipathogenic activities of ribosome-inactivating proteins from Phytolacca dioica L.

BACKGROUND: The species from the genus Phytolacca constitute one of the best sources of ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIPs) that have been used both in the therapy against virus and tumors and in the construction of transgenic plants resistant to virus, bacteria, fungi and insects. Here we investigate new activities of three representative RIPs from Phytolacca dioica (dioicin 2, PD-S2 and PD-L4). RESULTS: The three RIPs displayed, in addition to already reported activities, rRNA N-glycosylase activities against plant, bacterial and fungal ribosomes. Additionally dioicin 2 and PD-L4 displaye

Control of schistosomiasis in Adwa, Ethiopia, using the plant molluscicide endod (Phytolacca dodecandra).

Control of Schistosoma mansoni transmission in a town in northern Ethiopia was attempted using the natural product, endod (Phytolacca dodecandra), and its use compared with niclosamide. Within a five year period prevalence was reduced from 61.5 to 36.4% in the area where endod was used. Most of this decline was accounted for by the reduction in prevalence among 1-6 year old subjects. The practical use of endod as a molluscicide was demonstrated to have a performance which compared favourably with the commercial product, and although more expensive than niclosamide still at minimal annual cost

Ovicidal and larvicidal activity of the crude extracts from Phytolacca icosandra against Haemonchus contortus.

The development of anthelmintic resistance has impacted on the success of conventional anthelmintics (AH) for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing/browsing sheep and goats. Medicinal plants from the traditional herbolary in Mexico may provide new candidates that can be explored as alternative sources of AHs for ruminants. This study evaluated the leaf extracts derived from Phytolacca icosandra against infective L(3) larvae and eggs from Haemonchus contortus collected from sheep. Three extracts of different polarities were obtained from the leaf plants using ethanol, n-hexane an

Combined toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles and cadmium inducing root damage in Phytolacca americana L.

In recent years, nano-contamination in the soil environment has aroused concern. But it is still uncertain whether the interactions of nano- and metal-pollutants would have a combined toxic effect on plants. In this study, we investigated the effects of joint exposure to zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and Cd on the root tissue of Phytolacca americana L. Spin-polarized density functional theory simulations assumed that the plant may undergo metal toxicity or acidosis upon joint exposure to ZnO NPs/Cd. Subsequently, experimental exposure of P. americana verified the combined toxic effects. T

The antifungal activity and mechanisms of action of quantified extracts from berries, leaves and roots of Phytolacca tetramera.

BACKGROUND: Phytolacca tetramera is an endemic plant from Argentina that is currently at serious risk because its environment is subjected to a high anthropic impact. A previous study has shown that berry extracts obtained from this plant display antifungal activity against multiple human-pathogenic fungi when tested with a non-standardized method. Further evidences of the antifungal properties of other parts of the plant and studies of mechanism of antifungal action of the antifungal chemically characterized extracts are required. PURPOSE: This study aimed to gain further evidence of the ant

Phytolacca tetramera berries extracts and its main constituents as potentiators of antifungal drugs against Candida spp.

BACKGROUND: Extensive antifungal drug use has enhanced fungal resistance, resulting in persistent mycoses. Combining antifungal plant extracts/compounds with these drugs offers good alternatives to increase the activity of both partners, minimize side effects, and overcome drug resistance. In our previous study, Phytolacca tetramera berries extracts demonstrated activity against Candida spp., correlating with the amount of the main constituent phytolaccoside B and its genin, phytolaccagenin. The extracts and phytolaccagenin altered the fungal plasma membrane by binding to ergosterol, whereas p
