Effects of phytoplankton cell size and chloride concentration on the bioaccumulation of methylmercury in marine phytoplankton.

In the current study, the effects of phytoplankton cell size and methylmercury (MeHg) speciation on the bioaccumulation of MeHg by marine phytoplankton were investigated. Volume concentration factors (VCFs) of MeHg were determined in relation to the surface area to volume ratio of the cells for four species of diatom and a cyanobacteria species cultured in unenriched seawater. The VCFs of MeHg, ranging from 7.3 × 10(4) to 1.6 × 10(6) , increased linearly as the cell surface area-to-volume ratio increased. It suggests that pico- and nano-dominated phytoplankton communities may lead to larger Me

Global lake phytoplankton proliferation intensifies climate warming.

In lakes, phytoplankton sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and store it in the form of biomass organic carbon (OC); however, only a small fraction of the OC remains buried, while the remaining part is recycled to the atmosphere as CO2 and methane (CH4). This has the potential effect of adding CO2-equivalents (CO2-eq) to the atmosphere and producing a warming effect due to the higher radiative forcing of CH4 relative to CO2. Here we show a 3.1-fold increase in CO2-eq emissions over a 100-year horizon, with the effect increasing with global warming intensity. Climate warming has stimulat

Phytoplankton Producer Species and Transformation of Released Compounds over Time Define Bacterial Communities following Phytoplankton Dissolved Organic Matter Pulses.

Phytoplankton-bacterium interactions are mediated, in part, by phytoplankton-released dissolved organic matter (DOMp). Two factors that shape the bacterial community accompanying phytoplankton are (i) the phytoplankton producer species, defining the initial composition of released DOMp, and (ii) the DOMp transformation over time. We added phytoplankton DOMp from the diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus marinus MIT9312 to natural bacterial communities from the eastern Mediterranean and determined the bacterial responses over a time course of 72 h in terms of cell nu

Macroecological patterns of the phytoplankton production of polyunsaturated aldehydes.

The polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) are bioactive metabolites commonly released by phytoplankton species. Based primarily on laboratory experiments, PUAs have been implicated in deleterious effects on herbivores and competing phytoplankton species or in the regulation of the rates of bacterial organic matter remineralization; however, the role of the PUAs at an ecosystem level is still under discussion. Using data of PUA production in natural phytoplankton assemblages over a wide range of conditions, we analyzed macroecological patterns aiming for a comprehensive environmental contextualizati

Phytoplankton Cell Death Under the Global Change Scenario.

Phytoplankton are aquatic unicellular eukaryotic (i.e. protists) or prokaryotic photosynthetic organisms thriving in the world oceans. They are at the base of aquatic food webs and play a key role in determining the effects of the environmental change on the ocean surface. Phytoplankton are responsible for around 50% of the net amount of carbon assimilated annually by photoautotrophs. The removal of atmospheric CO2 does not only depend on CO2 fixation, but long-term carbon sequestration also requires the export of the organic matter fixed by phytoplankton in the surface layer (euphotic zone) i

An undiscovered circadian clock to regulate phytoplankton photosynthesis.

Circadian clocks exist in all types of organisms and coordinate key biological processes, e.g. photosynthesis in phytoplankton (microalgae) and land plants. We asked whether a circadian rhythm sustains in phytoplankton when living under constant illumination without environmental cues. Here, we report the first transcriptomic architecture of persistent oscillatory gene expression in the model marine diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum living under constant illumination and temperature without environmental cues. We show that cyclic expression of a considerable number of genes involved in light h

Storm impacts on phytoplankton community dynamics in lakes.

In many regions across the globe, extreme weather events such as storms have increased in frequency, intensity, and duration due to climate change. Ecological theory predicts that such extreme events should have large impacts on ecosystem structure and function. High winds and precipitation associated with storms can affect lakes via short-term runoff events from watersheds and physical mixing of the water column. In addition, lakes connected to rivers and streams will also experience flushing due to high flow rates. Although we have a well-developed understanding of how wind and precipitation

Olivine-Induced Alkalinity Enhancement Amplifies Phytoplankton Carbon Export Efficiency.

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) via olivine addition is a promising carbon dioxide (CO2) removal strategy, yet its impact on phytoplankton-driven biogeochemical processes remains unclear. We investigated the effects of olivine on the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana (T. pseudonana) and the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (E. huxleyi;calcifying and noncalcifying strains). Olivine addition increased total alkalinity across all cultures, although the increase was less pronounced in calcifying E. huxleyi. Notably, olivine stimulated growth and particulate organic carbon production in T. pseudo

Niche divergence suggests ecophysiological differences between cryptic phytoplankton species.

Species-based ecology is fundamental to understanding and predicting the role of phytoplankton diversity in the production and biogeochemical cycles of marine ecosystems. However, microscopy fails to distinguish genetically distinct but morphologically identical (cryptic) or near-identical (pseudocryptic) species, which are lumped into species complexes under the assumption that they have similar ecological characteristics. To test this hypothesis, we analysed a 12-year V4-18S rDNA metabarcoding dataset (168 dates) from the Long-Term Ecological Research Site MareChiara (Gulf of Naples, Mediter

Enantioselective transformation of phytoplankton-derived dihydroxypropanesulfonate by marine bacteria.

Chirality, a fundamental property of matter, is often overlooked in the studies of marine organic matter cycles. Dihydroxypropanesulfonate (DHPS), a globally abundant organosulfur compound, serves as an ecologically important currency for nutrient and energy transfer from phytoplankton to bacteria in the ocean. However, the chirality of DHPS in nature and its transformation remain unclear. Here, we developed a novel approach using chiral phosphorus-reagent labeling to separate DHPS enantiomers. Our findings demonstrated that at least one enantiomer of DHPS is present in marine diatoms and cocc

Sulfur metabolites that facilitate oceanic phytoplankton-bacteria carbon flux.

Unlike biologically available nitrogen and phosphorus, which are often at limiting concentrations in surface seawater, sulfur in the form of sulfate is plentiful and not considered to constrain marine microbial activity. Nonetheless, in a model system in which a marine bacterium obtains all of its carbon from co-cultured phytoplankton, bacterial gene expression suggests that at least seven dissolved organic sulfur (DOS) metabolites support bacterial heterotrophy. These labile exometabolites of marine dinoflagellates and diatoms include taurine, N-acetyltaurine, isethionate, choline-O-sulfate,

Phosphorus physiological ecology and molecular mechanisms in marine phytoplankton.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for marine phytoplankton and indeed all life forms. Current data show that P availability is growth-limiting in certain marine systems and can impact algal species composition. Available P occurs in marine waters as dissolved inorganic phosphate (primarily orthophosphate [Pi]) or as a myriad of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) compounds. Despite numerous studies on P physiology and ecology and increasing research on genomics in marine phytoplankton, there have been few attempts to synthesize information from these different disciplines. This paper is a

Mercury methylation and bacterial activity associated to tropical phytoplankton.

The methylated form of mercury (Hg), methylmercury (MeHg), is one of the most toxic pollutants. Biotic and/or abiotic methylation, often associated to sulfate-reducing bacteria metabolism, occurs in aquatic environments and in many tropical areas, mostly in the periphyton associated to floating macrophyte roots. Data about mercury methylation by phytoplankton are scarce and the aim of this study was to verify the biotic influence in the methylation process in Microcystis aeruginosa and Sineccocystis sp. laboratory strains and in natural populations of phytoplankton from two different aquatic s

Extracellular superoxide production is a widespread photoacclimation strategy in phytoplankton.

Phytoplankton help control the habitability of Earth by serving as the base of marine food webs, producing approximately half of the planet's oxygen, and sequestering carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. As global changes accelerate through the Anthropocene, phytoplankton communities face multiple stressors, such as shifting patterns in ocean circulation, and associated changes in light exposure. The health of the oceans depends on phytoplankton responses to these stressors; however, the physiological processes involved in light stress are not fully understood. Here, we surveyed 16 representati

Impacts of atmospheric particulate matter deposition on phytoplankton: A review.

In many rapidly urbanizing and industrializing countries, atmospheric pollution causes severe environmental problems and compromises the health of humans and ecosystems. Atmospheric emissions, which encompass gases and particulate matter, can be transported back to the earth's surface through atmospheric deposition. Atmospheric deposition supplies chemical species that can serve as nutrients and/or toxins to aquatic ecosystems, resulting in wide-ranging responses of aquatic organisms. Among the aquatic organisms, phytoplankton is the basis of the aquatic food web and is a key player in global

Manganese Limitation of Phytoplankton Physiology and Productivity in the Southern Ocean.

Although iron and light are understood to regulate the Southern Ocean biological carbon pump, observations have also indicated a possible role for manganese. Low concentrations in Southern Ocean surface waters suggest manganese limitation is possible, but its spatial extent remains poorly constrained and direct manganese limitation of the marine carbon cycle has been neglected by ocean models. Here, using available observations, we develop a new global biogeochemical model and find that phytoplankton in over half of the Southern Ocean cannot attain maximal growth rates because of manganese def

Intracellular speciation and transformation of inorganic mercury in marine phytoplankton.

Metal speciation is closely related to toxicity in aquatic organisms, but quantitative study of mercury transformation has rarely been reported. In this study, the ability of three marine phytoplankton species, including a green alga Chlorella autotrophica, a flagellate Isochrysis galbana and a diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, to convert inorganic mercury were examined. We found that all algae tested were able to transform Hg(II) into dissolved gaseous mercury (DGM), phytochelatin (PC) complexes and metacinnabar (β-HgS). The most tolerant species, T. weissflogii, generally produced the highes

Effects of halogenated organic compounds on photosynthesis in estuarine phytoplankton.

Chlorine oxidants (chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite, and calcium hypochlorite) are used as biocides to control fouling in seawater cooled power generating plants and to kill pathogens in sewage effluents entering estuarine waters. Organisms killed include algae, fungi, bacteria, barnacles, oysters, and clams. Use of these chemicals in saline waters results in the formation of halogenated by-products (JOHANNESSON 1958, DUURSAM & PARSI 1976, DOVE 1973). BEAN et al, (1978), in a study of chlorinated seawater, identified eighteen organic compounds generated by chlorination. Due to rapid substitut

Appraisal of sedimentary alkenones for the quantitative reconstruction of phytoplankton biomass.

Marine primary productivity (PP) is the driving factor in the global marine carbon cycle. Its reconstruction in past climates relies on biogeochemical proxies that are not considered to provide an unequivocal signal. These are often based on the water column flux of biogenic components to sediments (organic carbon, biogenic opal, biomarkers), although other factors than productivity are posited to control the sedimentary contents of the components, and their flux is related to the fraction of export production buried in sediments. Moreover, most flux proxies have not been globally appraised. H
