The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative complications during genioplasty using piezosurgery devices or traditional rotating drills. Forty patients underwent genioplasty to solve their chin anomalies. This study showed that, using piezosurgery, pain and swelling were reduced compared to the traditional technique in the immediate postoperative period of healing (within 15 days). Paresthesia was observed in all patients up to 15th postoperative day, independently of the used surgical technique, but at the sixth postoperative month it was completely absent.

Piezosurgery, or the use of piezoelectric devices, is being applied increasingly in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The main advantages of this technique are precise and selective cuttings, the avoidance of thermal damage, and the preservation of soft-tissue structures. Through the application of piezoelectric surgery, implant-site preparation, bone grafting, sinus-floor elevation, edentulous ridge splitting or the lateralization of the inferior alveolar nerve are very technically feasible. This clinical overview gives a short summary of the current literature and outlines the advantages and d

INTRODUCTION: Eagle syndrome (ES) is an uncommon complication of styloid process elongation with stylohyoideal complex symptomatic calcification. It is an uncommon condition (4% of the population) that is symptomatic in only 4% of the cases. Eagle syndrome is usually an acquired condition that can be related to tonsillectomy or to a neck trauma. A type of ES is the styloid-carotid syndrome, a consequence of the irritation of pericarotid sympathetic fibers and compression on the carotid artery. Clinical manifestations are found most frequently after head turning and neck compression. Although c

CONCLUSION: For otologic revision surgery, the advantage of the piezoelectric device appears real because it is possible to perform a 'blind' cutting of bone with fewer precautions necessary for soft tissues such as the facial nerve, lateral sinus, and dura mater.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of the piezoelectric device in revision surgery for chronic otitis media.
METHODS: A total of 30 patients had revision mastoidectomy with previous canal wall up mastoidectomy. The piezoelectric device was used in all intraoperative steps. Before surgery and 1 month a

Piezosurgery is an alternative surgical technique, now widely tested, that uses ultrasounds for bone cutting. This device uses ultrasounds to section hard tissues without harming surrounding soft tissues. The authors analyzed their experience in craniomaxillofacial procedures with piezosurgery. A comparison between operation timing and complication rates between piezosurgery and traditional cutting instruments has been performed. A total of 27 patients were examined (15 females and 12 males; average age, of 5.5 months) affected by craniosynostosis. The aim of this study was to analyze the adva

BACKGROUND: Attic cholesteatomas can be exenterated by transcanal endoscopic ear surgery (TEES). In the limited operative field of exclusive transcanal endoscopic atticotomy, surgeons use either a piezosurgery scalpel or a drilling system to remove the posterior lateral bony wall of the epitympanum. We aimed to investigate the feasibility of using piezosurgery or microdrill for endoscopic atticotomy during exenteration of attic cholesteatomas.
METHODS: This study is a retrospective chart review of patients diagnosed with attic cholesteatoma, who were treated by exclusive TEES. The superior an

Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontic procedure has become useful adjunct to reduce orthodontic treatment time as compared with conventional orthodontics. This case demonstrates the use of Piezosurgery® to facilitate rapid tooth movement with relatively shorter treatment time. A 23-year-old male with Angles Class I malocclusion having spaced anterior teeth and protrusion requested orthodontic treatment with reduced time period. Before surgery, presurgical orthodontic treatment was done to do initial alignment of the teeth. This was followed by piezosurgical corticotomy and final spa

PURPOSE: To achieve the desired outcome in rhinoplasty depends on many factors. Osteotomy and surgical reshaping of nasal bones are important steps that require careful planning and execution. The availability of different tools raises the question of which one provides significant advantages for both technique and surgical outcome. Our prospective randomized pilot study compared the outcome of post-traumatic rhinoplasty performed with two different external techniques: ultrasound osteotomic cut using the Piezosurgery Medical Device (Mectron, Carasco, Italy) and traditional external osteotomy.

Pierre Robin sequence (formerly a syndrome) is named after the French stomatologist who, in 1923 and 1934, described the problems associated with micrognathia in newborn. It comprises mandibular micrognathia, U-shaped cleft palate, and glossoptosis. The typical symptoms are hypoxaemia, noisy breathing, snoring, stridor, cyanosis, bradycardia, feeding difficulties, and failure to thrive. Distraction osteogenesis has recently been considered as a surgical option for early intervention to lengthen the mandible and relieve respiratory problems. Piezosurgery offers a modality to make precise bone c

Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) is frequently used to decompress the cervical spine; however, this procedure is risky when dealing with a hard disc or ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL). Piezosurgery offers a useful tool for performing this procedure. In this article, we present a 50 years old man who had cervical spondylotic myelopathy with OPLL at the C 6 level and segmental stenosis of the cervical spinal canal. When removing the posterior wall of his C 6 vertebral body and OPLL, piezosurgery was used to selectively cut hard structures piece by piece w

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) is a disorder of unknown etiology mainly seen in growing patients, which results in facial asymmetry. High condylectomy alone or in association with orthognathic surgery can improve the occlusion and the facial aesthetics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 2005 and 2012, a total of 5 patients underwent high condylectomy for UCH using a piezoelectric cutting device. All patients were treated postoperatively with functional rehabilitation.
RESULTS: The long-term follow-up showed that all patients had a satisfactory temporomandibular joint articu

The piezosurgery instrument, developed in 1988, uses a modulated ultrasonic frequency that permits highly precise and safe cutting of hard tissue. Nerves, vessels, and soft tissue are not injured by the microvibrations (60 to 200 mm/sec), which are optimally adjusted to target only mineralized tissue. The selective and thermally harmless nature of the piezosurgery instrument results in a low bleeding tendency. In addition, the instrument can be used in operations requiring either local or general anesthesia. The precise nature of the instrument allows exact, clean, and smooth cut geometries du
