[Legal access to cannabis and pilot projects in Switzerland].

On March 31, 2021, the Swiss Federal Council accepted the Ordinance on Pilot Trials under the Narcotics Law, which will come into force on May 15, 2021 and will authorize pilot trials of recreational cannabis use by adults. The purpose of these trials will be to provide a scientific basis for future policy decisions on cannabis regulation. This ordinance is based on the idea that the legislator must give himself the possibility to experiment, as it was already the case in the 1990s with the pilot projects of heroin prescription, which proved to be useful in the legislative process, leading to

Surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in resource-constrained settings - experience from five pilot projects.

OBJECTIVE: The rapid increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among bacteria is a major public health concern. The WHO Global Strategy for Containment of Antimicrobial Resistance proposed that model systems be developed for AMR surveillance and for monitoring antimicrobial use. METHODS: Pilot projects were established in three sites in India and two in South Africa to collect monthly AMR data on target bacteria for at least 12 months. Escherichia coli was used as the target bacterium in four sites (three in India, one in South Africa). One South African site used Streptococcus pneumoniae an

Teleradiology in KwaZulu-Natal. A pilot project.

OBJECTIVE: This was a pilot teleradiology project connecting two secondary KwaZulu-Natal hospitals' radiography departments to a central Durban teaching hospital. The purpose of the study was to assess the usefulness of same-day teleradiology reports to the medical staff and whether such a service changed patient management. DESIGN: After 1 month's service at each hospital, the first 200 teleradiology reports, original radiographs and patients' case notes were reviewed to determine whether any errors in interpretation of the radiographs had been made and whether the reports had changed patien

Minimally invasive suture training for resident, a pilot project: the MAESTRO project.

Despite the dominance of minimally invasive surgery (MIS), traditional "see one, do one, teach one" residency models often lack structured ex-vivo training. Competency Assessment Tools (CAT) are essential for objective performance evaluation in this field. To evaluate the effectiveness of a structured, 6-h intensive training protocol using the "Simsei laparoscopic trainer" in improving residents' skills in intracorporeal knot tying and continuous suturing. This prospective, observer-blinded study involved six surgical residents (PGY 1-5). Participants underwent a baseline test (intracorporeal

A realist review of dyslexia pilot project research.

We conducted a realist review of state-authorized dyslexia pilot projects to understand how they have been implemented and evaluated, and the extent to which they adhere to best practice recommendations. We found that states have piloted broadly similar policy programs minimally consisting of professional development, universal screening, and instructional intervention. However, none of the pilot report documents we reviewed included explicit logic models or theories of action, which makes it difficult to understand the pilot projects and their results. Officially, most of the pilot project ev

[Sportstherapy for outpatients with eating disorders: a pilot project].

Many patients with Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa (AN, BN) engage in sport and physical activity in an excessive and compulsive manner, mostly to influence weight and shape. Many of them experience guilt in case of not exercising. However, sport and physical exercise can also have a positive effect on mental illness by influencing mood, sense of self-esteem and body experience. Until now, only few programs for eating disorder patients exist which aim at changing physical activity behavior and use sport and exercise activities in a therapeutic way. We developed a sport-therapeutic program designe

Linguistic evaluation of Profet II: a pilot project.

Profet, a word prediction program, was designed to accelerate the writing process and to minimize the writing effort of persons with motor dysfunction. It has also proved to be beneficial in text construction for persons with linguistic impairment such as dyslexia. With increasing linguistic demands on support for individuals with severe reading and writing difficulties/dyslexia, the need for an improved version of Profet arose. Thus, Profet II was designed. In this study, a procedure for evaluating Profet II has been developed. Results from a single-case evaluation study with a person with dy

Early screening for dyslexia--a collaborative pilot project.

An ongoing collaborative project, currently being piloted in 12 Wiltshire primary schools, is described. The aim is to provide a means of identifying potentially dyslexic children by the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) with a view to early intervention. The causal links identified by research between phonological skills and literacy development are taken as the theoretical basis of an initial screening procedure, and an intervention package is implemented for identified children. Those demonstrating persistent difficulties one year later are further assessed over a school term using an assessment

Measuring uptake of the 2024 national standards for survivorship care: Insights from National Cancer Institute funded pilot projects.

PURPOSE: Measuring alignment with clinical program standards is essential for strengthening cancer survivorship care yet remains challenging due to the range and duration of services involved. The 2024 National Standards for Survivorship Care provide aspirational recommendations across three domains-policy, processes, and evaluation/assessment-for health systems developing survivorship care. Following their release, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) funded 18 supplements to understand alignment of existing services and programs with the standards and identify implementation barriers and faci

A Quality Improvement Pilot Project for Noise Reduction in the NICU.

BACKGROUND: Increased noxious noise leads to adverse short-term and long-term effects on the growing neonate. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends maintaining a noise level of less than 45 decibels (dBA). The average baseline noise level in an open-pod neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was 62.6 dBA. PURPOSE: The purpose of this pilot project was to reduce the average noise levels by 39% at the end of an 11-week period. METHODS: The location of the project was in a large, high-acuity level IV open-pod layout NICU that consisted of 4 pods, one of which was cardiac-focused. The avera

[Therapy of post-stroke depression with fluoxetine. A pilot project].

Depression is a common but often unrecognized complication after cerebrovascular stroke. Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) have been found to be effective in poststroke depression, but side effects such as orthostatic hypotension, arrhythmia limit their wider use. In this pilot study the effects of treatment with the specific serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine (20 mg) in 10 severely depressed patients (HAM-D score between 27 and 35) after cerebrovascular stroke were investigated. Four patients dropped out of the study prematurely because of worsening of their condition (n = 4) and on

[Results of a deafness screening program for infants: a pilot project].

This article describes a screening program for hearing loss among infants. The program, designed according to ASHA recommendations, was implemented in a public health district of the province of Quebec. In the first stage of the program all infants born between April 1, 1990 and March 30, 1992 were assessed for risk factors for deafness. In the second stage, those infants considered at risk were given an audiological examination at six months of age. There were 3,944 births during the study period and of these, 8.4% of the infants had at least one risk factor for hearing impairment, the most f

Training and activities of pharmacist prescribers in a California pilot project.

The training of pharmacists allowed to prescribe under protocol in California health manpower pilot projects (HMPPs) and the specific program at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) are described. From 1972 to 1983, several bills were passed allowing pharmacists to prescribe and administer drugs or devices in HMPPs under specified conditions. The main objective of the HMPPs was to train pharmacists to assist physicians and other providers in providing good follow-up care for chronically ill patients. Programs for pharmacists consisted of a training phase followed by an employment phase in whi
