In the present study an attempt was made to analyse from a clinical viewpoint the descriptions in the book "Noticias do que he o achaque do bicho" by Miguel Dias Pimenta (1661-1715), which are considered by some authors to be the first reference to the chagasic megaesophagus and megacolon that appeared in history. In descriptions considered to refer megaesophagus, although dysphagia, the major symptom of this disease, is not recognized, typical manifestations of a irritating, inflammatory or ulcerative condition are identified, not affecting the esophagus but the stomach. In the description co

Essential oils are biologically and environmentally safe pesticidal compounds yielded from aromatic plants. Spices are important sources of essential oils, and they are widely used in the medicine, food, and various other industries. Among the different spices, Allspice (Pimenta dioica) is underexplored in terms of its biological efficacy and a limited number of studies are available on the chemical composition of Allspice essential oil (AEO); thus, the present study evaluated the larvicidal property, the repellency, and the fumigant toxicity against common pests of stored products of AEO. AEO

Pimenta racemosa (P. racemosa) tree leaves are used in traditional medicine to alleviate flatulence and gastrointestinal disorders. Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a gastrointestinal inflammatory disease with well-known inflammatory and immunoregulatory pathological features. The complexity of the disease requires multi-targeted treatment. Because of their relative safety and effectiveness, natural products can be utilized as adjunct and alternative agents to conventional UC treatment. So, the present work aimed to isolate phenolic constituents of the plant’s 80% aqueous methanol extract (AME) and

Haemaphysalis longicornis, which is widely distributed in China, can transmit various tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, babesiosis, rickettsia disease and so on, and do great harm to human health and the development of animal husbandry. Chemical acaricides are the most traditional tick control method, but because of its many shortcomings, there is an urgent need to find a substitute with high efficiency, environmental protection and low toxicity. It has been found that some plant essential oils (EOs) have good insecticidal activity and environmental safet

BACKGROUND: Hyalomma rufipes (H. rufipes) ticks are widespread in Africa, Europe, and Asia. They transmit crimean-congo hemorrhagic fever virus, rickettsia, and midichloria, posing a significant risk to public health and livestock development. Developing acaricides based on plant essential oils (EOs) have risen, yet matters regarding their mechanism and feasible methods for tick tests remain unanswered. The aim of this study was to identify the chemical constituents of three EOs and evaluate their acaricidal activity against larval and adult ticks of H. rufipes, as well as to establish an arti

In response to the urgent need to control Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), this study aims to explore potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents from natural sources. Moreover, cytokine immunological responses to the viral infection could lead to acute respiratory distress which is considered a critical and life-threatening complication associated with the infection. Therefore, the anti-viral and anti-inflammatory agents can be key to the management of patients with COVID-19. Four bioactive compounds, namely ferulic acid 1, rutin 2, gallic acid 3, and chlorogenic acid 4 were isolated from the leaves o

Acaricidal activity of essential oils extracted from cumin seeds (Cuminum cyminum), allspice berries (Pimenta dioica) and basil leaves (Ocimum basilicum) were tested on 10-day-old Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus tick larvae using the LPT. Two-fold dilutions of the three essential oils were tested from a starting dilution of 20% down to 1.25%. Results showed a high toxicological effect for cumin, producing 100% mortality in all tested concentrations on R. microplus larvae. Similarly, allspice essential oil produced 100% mortality at all concentrations with the exception of a dramatic decrea

Aedes aegypti is the vector responsible for transmitting pathogens that cause various infectious diseases, such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya, worrying health authorities in the tropics. Due to resistance of mosquitoes to synthetic insecticides, the search for more effective insecticidal agents becomes crucial. The aim of this study was to verify the larvicidal, adulticidal, and anticholinesterase activities of the essential oils of the Illicium verum (EOIV), Pimenta dioica (EOPD), and Myristica fragrans (EOMF) against Ae. aegypti. The essential oils (EOs) were obtained by hyd

Piper tuberculatum, traditionally known in Brazil as 'pimenta-d'arda,' 'pimenta-longa,' or 'pimenta de macaco,' has been used in Brazilian folk medicine to treat inflammatory symptoms. Considering this species' significant essential oil content, the present study aimed to evaluate the anti-edematogenic and anti-inflammatory effects of the crucial oil Piper tuberculatum (EOPT) in vivo. To this end, Swiss mice (Mus musculus) of both sexes were treated orally with the EOPT at 50, 100, and 250 mg/Kg. The rotarod and open field evaluated the potential activity in the central nervous system. At the

Lyme disease is the most common vector borne-disease in the United States (US). While the majority of the Lyme disease patients can be cured with 2⁻4 weeks antibiotic treatment, about 10⁻20% of patients continue to suffer from persisting symptoms. While the cause of this condition is unclear, persistent infection was proposed as one possibility. It has recently been shown that B. burgdorferi develops dormant persisters in stationary phase cultures that are not killed by the current Lyme antibiotics, and there is interest in identifying novel drug candidates that more effectively kill such form

Total disc replacement (TDR) surgeries have significantly increased in number since US FDA approval. However, the associated complications such as implant malposition, loosening, subsidence, implant migration, fractures, and infection may necessitate retrieval of the artificial disc and proceeding with interbody fusion. Retrieval of artificial discs in proximity to important vascular, urological, and other vital anatomical structures (for example, L4-5) presents numerous difficulties to spine and approach surgeons. To avoid the impediments of an anterior revision approach, in 2006 Pimenta et a

A variety of essential oils and edible compounds have been widely recognized for their antifungal activity in recent years. In this study, we explored the antifungal activity of estragole from Pimenta racemosa against Aspergillus flavus and investigated the underlying mechanism of action. The results showed that estragole had significant antifungal activity against A. flavus, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.5 μL/mL against spore germination. Additionally, estragole inhibited the biosynthesis of aflatoxin in a dose-dependent manner, and aflatoxin biosynthesis was significantly inhi
