Pinch strength analyses in lacertus syndrome.

PURPOSE: Lacertus syndrome is defined as proximal median nerve entrapment at the lacertus fibrosus. We aimed to analyze change in pinch strengths in patients who underwent median nerve release at the lacertus fibrosus under WALANT (wide-awake local anesthesia, no tourniquet). METHODS: Pinch strength was measured with a pinch gauge. Subjective DASH score and pain, numbness in the operated extremity and satisfaction on visual analog scales were analyzed before and 6 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: There were 32 patients. Median nerve release under the lacertus fibrosus elicited statistically sig

The effect of wrist and arm postures on peak pinch strength.

This paper examines the effect of various arm postures on peak pinch strength. Twenty (20) able-bodied, male subjects volunteered to participate in a set of two experiments. The first experiment examined the effect of shoulder and elbow posture on peak pinch strength. The second experiment examined the effect of forearm posture, wrist posture, and pinch type on peak pinch strength. Results from the first experiment indicated that elbow posture had a significant effect on pinch strength. It was documented that extreme elbow flexion decreased pinch strength by up to 9%. Results from the second e

The Linburg-Comstock anomaly: incidence in Malaysians and effect on pinch strength.

PURPOSE: To obtain epidemiologic data on the Linburg-Comstock anomaly in Malaysia and to study the effect of the anomaly on key pinch strength. METHODS: We examined 292 healthy subjects (162 female and 130 male) bilaterally for the presence of the Linburg-Comstock anomaly. Each subject's key pinch strength was measured bilaterally using a pinch meter. RESULTS: The Linburg-Comstock anomaly was present in 101 of the 292 subjects (35%). Sixty-five subjects (22%) had it unilaterally, and 36 subjects (6%) had it bilaterally. The anomaly was associated with superior key pinch strength. CONCLUSION

Pinch Strength vs Handgrip Strength for Screening Sarcopenia and Predicting Adverse Health Outcomes in Older Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Handgrip strength (HGS) is a cornerstone of sarcopenia assessment, but its utility for screening is debated, partly because of its role as both a screener and a diagnostic component. This study aimed to evaluate pinch strength, a measure of fine motor function, as an alternative to HGS for predicting sarcopenia and adverse health outcomes in older adults. DESIGN: A 2-year prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 954 community-dwelling adults aged ≥60 years from 3 communities. METHODS: Baseline assessments included pinch strength, HGS, body composition, and functional

Measuring pad-pad pinch strength in a non-human primate: Macaca fascicularis.

The primary purpose of this study was to establish a methodology for determining and perhaps predicting (via regression analysis of anthropometric measures) Macaca fascicularis isometric pinch strength for a specific task. The larger purpose of this work was to properly scale a pinching task for the monkeys in order to study dose-response relationships in a non-human primate model for carpal tunnel syndrome. Three female and one male macaque (n=4) of varying size and age were trained to perform a left-handed pad-pad pinch. The task required 60 degrees of wrist flexion at a static pinching dist

Reliability and validity of pinch and thumb strength measurements in de Quervain's disease.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the test-retest reliability and construct validity of pinch and thumb strength measurements in subjects with de Quervain's disease. Maximal palmar pinch and thumb strength (adduction, extension, abduction, and flexion) were measured using, respectively, a pinch gauge and a biaxial dynamometer. The reliability was estimated using the generalizability theory. The validity hypotheses were as follows: 1) the pinch and thumb strength of the symptomatic side would be significantly lower than that of the asymptomatic side, and 2) the strength loss would be gre

Pinch strength and its variability: Novel insights into functional decline in sarcopenic obesity.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenic obesity (SO) represents a complex nutritional state associated with adverse health outcomes, especially in older adults. While grip strength has been extensively studied in relation to functional status, the role of pinch strength remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the associations between pinch strength parameters and different body composition phenotypes and to explore its potential role in the relationship between SO and functional status, including physical performance, cognitive function, and frailty. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included

Onset of grip- and pinch-strength impairment after acute poisonings with organophosphate insecticides.

The course of organophosphate-induced delayed polyneuropathy (OPIDP) in humans has not been quantitatively measured in epidemiologic studies. This study evaluated the association of acute OP poisonings with motor neurologic impairment. Hand grip and pinch strength were evaluated among 62 Nicaraguan men hospitalized for acute OP poisoning between 1992 and 1996; 39 cattle ranchers and fishermen who had never experienced pesticide poisoning were controls. Exposure categories were moderate and severe poisonings with neuropathic and non-neuropathic OPs. Strength was measured at hospital discharge a

Establishing normative pinch and grip strengths across adult age groups in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Pinch and grip strengths are vital indicators of upper limb function, musculoskeletal health, and general health. While most research has focused on older individuals, it is crucial to build normative data for younger populations. This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the normative values for lateral pinch strength (LPS) and hand grip strength (HGS) in healthy adult Singaporeans. METHODS: The study recruited 500 healthy individuals without any serious general illnesses and upper limb pain, aged 21-80 years. LPS and HGS were measured using a standardized JAMAR hand

Short-term effects of running exercise on pinch strength, grip strength, and manual dexterity of the dominant and non-dominant hands.

Occupations including first responders and military require manual tasks; therefore changes in hand strength and dexterity could affect performance. We hypothesised that pinch strength, grip strength, and dexterity will change after unloaded and loaded exercise. Twenty-four male (25 ± 4.0 yrs; 86.3 ± 9.3 kg) and 10 female (25 ± 6.0 yrs; 62.1 ± 5.9 kg) participants completed 3 conditions for 5 minutes: (1) no exercise (2) run with no load at 3.0 m/s and (3) run wearing a 9.1 kg belt. Heart rate was different among conditions (p ≤ 0.05). Pinch strength was significantly different for the non-dom
