Some physicochemical characteristics of pinus (Pinus halepensis Mill., Pinus pinea L., Pinus pinaster and Pinus canariensis) seeds from North Algeria, their lipid profiles and volatile contents.

Physicochemical characteristics of seeds of some pinus species (Pinus halepensis Mill., Pinus pinea L., Pinus pinaster and Pinus canariensis) grown in North Algeria were determined. The results showed that the seeds consist of 19.8-36.7% oil, 14.25-26.62% protein, 7.8-8.6% moisture. Phosphorus, potassium and magnesium were the predominant elements present in seeds. Pinus seed's oil physicochemical properties show acid values (4.9-68.9), iodine values (93.3-160.4) and saponification values (65.9-117.9). Oil analysis showed that the major unsaturated fatty acids for the four species were linolei

Dothistroma septosporum Identified in Greece on Pinus brutia and Pinus nigra Plantations.

Dothistroma needle blight (DNB) is caused by two ascomycete fungi, Dothistroma septosporum with a worldwide distribution and D. pini found in the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, and France (1). DNB has been known in Greece since the early 1980s (3) and the species responsible for the disease was reported as D. pini. In December 2011, needles were collected from three trees in Lagada, Thessaloniki regional unit of Central Macedonia (northern Greece), where the disease was first recorded. DNB infection seems to be limited to a valley in this area in Pinus nigra and P. brutia plantations

Microbial utilization of Pinus radiata bark.

A screening program using suspensions of ground bark in mineral salts media, or extracts prepared from ground bark by treating with hot water, sulfuric acid, ammonium hydroxide, or sodium hydroxide, yielded more than 200 pure cultures of fungi, yeasts, and bacteria. Only 38 of these have good growth on liquid bark media. All were filamentous fungi, although many bacteria and yeasts were among the cultures that failed to give appreciable growth. Species of Penicillium, Scopulariopsis, Aspergillus, Trichoderma, Cladosporium, and Fusarium were among the most actively growing cultures. Cell biomas

Ethnopharmacology of Pinus species with focus on the Hispaniola pine (Pinus occidentalis Swartz): evidence, gaps, and research roadmap.

The review systematically maps the ethnomedicinal uses and chemistry of Pinus spp., with an emphasis on the under-studied Pinus occidentalis Swartz, known as "pino criollo", "pino de cuaba" or "pin creole". It is the only native pine species of Hispaniola, and holds ecological, cultural, and medicinal significance across the Dominican Republic and Haiti. A data search was conducted across several databases (Google Scholar, SciFinder, Scopus, ScienceDirect, PubMed/Medline, and TRIP) to evaluate the existing knowledge of P. occidentalis spp. and compare it to that of other Pinus species for medi

[Storage proteins from seeds of Pinus pinea L].

The Mediterranean stone pine Pinus pinea L. (gymnosperm, Pinaceae) is much appreciated for its seed production, widely used in food preparation in the Mediterranean Basin. Seeds contain 25% proteins on a dry-weight basis. Pinus pinea accumulate globulins as major storage proteins in seeds (75% of total storage proteins), composed of several subunits of 10 to 150 kDa, revealed by SDS-PAGE. The albumin fraction (15%) represents three subunits of 14, 24 and 46 kDa. Glutelins, the least soluble fraction, represents a small proportion (10%). Their constitutive units have frequent PM of 43 kDa. Prol

Delayed seed dispersal in Pinus torreyana (Torrey pine).

Torrey pine exhibits a pattern of seed release intermediate between an open and closed-cone species. It was found that the cones open at maturity, but that seed fall from some cones continues for up to 13 years. Approximately 77% of the total seed crop was present in age classes one or more years past the time of seed maturity.Serotiny is thought to evolve in response to fire, and partial serotiny at the population level has been attributed to circumstances in which the strong selective pressure of fire is relaxed. We hypothesize that delayed seed dispersal in Torrey pine is a stable trait whi

Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical effects of Pinus pinaster bark extract.

In everyday life, our body generates free radicals and other reactive oxygen species which are derived either from the endogenous metabolic processes (within the body) or from external sources. Many clinical and pharmacological studies suggest that natural antioxidants can prevent oxidative damage. Among the natural antioxidant products, Pycnogenol(®) (French Pinus pinaster bark extract) has been received considerable attention because of its strong free radical-scavenging activity against reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. P. pinaster bark extract (PBE) contains polyphenolic compounds (the

Effects of Heavy Metals on the Metabolome of Pinus sylvestris (Pinaceae).

The effects of Cu, Ni, and Cd on the Pinus sylvestris metabolome was studied in experimental conditions by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Structural changes in plant metabolite network became detectable on day 6 of exposure to the metals, 3-6 days earlier than visual signs of toxicity developed. Differences at the metabolome level arose earlier in a control group of plants, and specific effects of particular metals on the plant metabolome became distinct on day 9. Both nature and concentration of a metal equally contributed to the plant metabolome clustering. Plant responses (ch

First Report of Bursaphelenchus yongensis on Pinus rigida in Korea.

During a pinewood nematode survey in 2011, a dead pitch pine (Pinus rigida) was found in Daejeon city, Korea. Samples were taken from several regions of the trunk and nematodes were extracted from the wood samples by a modified Baermann funnel method (1). Recovered nematodes were then cultured on Botrytis cinerea grown in potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium. Males and females (n = 10) were examined under an inverted light microscope. Morphologically, these nematodes were identified as Bursaphelenchus yongensis sharing the characters of the genus Bursaphelenchus including a large median bulb, off

Benzothiadiazole induces Pinus koraiensis to resist pine wilt disease.

Benzothiadiazole (BTH) and methyl salicylate (MeSA) have been confirmed as effective inducers for numerous plant species, empowering them to fend off pathogens. In this research, we combined the relative tolerance index (RTI) and relative anti-nematode index (RAI) to assess how these two inducers influence Pinus koraiensis in resisting pine wood nematodes (PWNs). Additionally, we integrated transcriptome and metabolome analyses to uncover the underlying mechanism. The results indicated that BTH could stimulate P. koraiensis to resist PWNs, and the induction effects differed depending on the co
