Phenolic antibacterials from Piper betle in the prevention of halitosis.

Piper betle L. (Piperaceae) leaves which are traditionally used in India and China in the prevention of oral malodor was examined by bioassay-guided fractionation to yield allylpyrocatechol (APC) as the major active principle which showed promising activity against obligate oral anaerobes responsible for halitosis. The biological studies with APC indicated that the potential to reduce methylmercaptan and hydrogen sulfide was mainly due to the anti-microbial activity as established using dynamic in vitro models.

Anticoccidial activities of Piper betle L essential oil on Eimeria tenella oocysts.

Coccidiosis poses a significant threat to the poultry industry, with synthetic antibiotics and disinfectants being the primary tools for control. This study investigated the potential of Piper betle L essential oil (PBEO) as a natural alternative against Eimeria tenella, one of the most pathogenic Eimeria species affecting poultry. Our findings revealed that PBEO exhibits significant anticoccidial effects through two primary mechanisms: (i) oocysticidal activity by disintegrating oocyst walls and (ii) inhibition of the sporulation process. PBEO demonstrated oocysticidal activities ranging from

Leaves that leave their mark: A case series of pediatric Piper Betle-induced leukomelanosis.

This case series presents 10 pediatric patients, aged 4 to 9 years, with leukomelanosis on the chest or forehead. The pigmentary changes developed after the traditional use of Piper betle leaves as a home-based remedy for a cough or cold. Piper betle-induced leukomelanosis in children is a rare dermatosis resulting from cultural practices. It is important to recognize the role of ethnobotany in dermatology.

Hydroxychavicol derivatives from Piper betle Linn. as natural PDE4 inhibitors with anti-inflammatory effects.

PDE4 inhibitors have been developed as anti-inflammatory medications primarily used in the clinical treatment of pulmonary inflammations such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, the application of these drugs is usually restricted by obvious side effects, such as nausea and vomiting. Our previous study found that several natural PDE4 inhibitors or their modified derivatives showed minimal side effects, particularly reduced incidence of nausea and vomiting, which aroused our interest in searching for natural PDE4 inhibitors. In this stud

Putative binding of Piper betle L. phytochemicals to mannitol pathway enzymes during sporulation of Eimeria tenella.

Coccidiosis, caused by Eimeria species, remains a major challenge to the poultry industry. The parasite transmission relies on the environmental sporogony stage during which the parasite transforms from non-infectious to infectious oocysts. This host-independent metabolism is driven by the mannitol pathway, which operates in oocysts of Eimeria, Toxoplasma, and Cryptosporidium. Our previous in vitro study demonstrated that Piper betle L. essential oil (PBEO) exhibits anticoccidial activity through oocysticidal effects and sporulation inhibition (IC₅₀ 1.31% at 72 h). Here, we performed systemati
