From the galls of Pistacia terebinthus we obtained an extract that proved to be effective against chronic and acute inflammation. Now we report on the isolation and identification of three triterpenes: two tirucallane-type lanostanoids and one oleanane, which we have identified as masticadienonic acid (1), masticadienolic acid (2), and morolic acid (3), respectively. All of them showed effectiveness on the mouse ear inflammation induced by repeated applications of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate and on the phospholipase A2-induced foot paw edema. The pharmacological activity of the compou

Cryopreservation protocols by dehydration and one-step freezing were developed for seeds from three Pistacia species, i.e., P. vera, P. terebinthus and P. lentiscus, which were characterised by different initial germination percentages (100%, 17% and 81%, respectively). In P. vera, a maximum of 90% germination was obtained following 8 hours drying in silica gel (corresponding to 11.7% moisture content on a FW basis) and direct immersion in LN. In P. terebinthus and P. lentiscus, shorter periods of dehydration (1 hour and 15 min, respectively) were sufficient to reduce their moisture content to

Pistacia palaestina hosts several Fordini gall-forming aphid species, which manipulate its anatomy and metabolism, creating galls that provide nutrients and protection. This study compared the extended metabolic profiles of P. palaestina leaves and galls induced by Baizongia pistaciae, Paracletus cimiciformis, and Geoica spp. GC-MS analysis of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH) extracts revealed a high abundance of shikimic acid and quinic acid isomers, along with diverse hydrocarbons, lipids, terpenoids, phenolics, and carbohydrates, each showing distinct distributions across gall type

Exposure to environmental toxicants such as Bisphenol A (BPA) has raised serious health issues globally particularly in developing countries. It is ubiquitously used in the manufacturing of canned food and feeding bottles. BPA generated reactive oxygen species can lead to several diseases including cardiotoxicity. However, the endpoints stimulated in BPA cardiotoxicity yet need to be investigated. The current study was aimed to investigate the underlying molecular pathways which may contribute in revealing the protective effects of Pistacia integerrima against BPA induced oxidative stress. The

In this study, the incorporation of varying levels of an ultrasound-assisted Pistacia terebinthus L. extract into fermented sausages (sucuks) and their effects on the quality attributes and biogenic amine formation were investigated. Terebinth extracts were prepared using 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% ethanol and distilled water. Ultrasound-assisted 70% ethanol extract was selected due to its higher total phenolic content and DPPH value. Five groups of experimental sucuks were produced by incorporating 1, 5, and 10 mL/kg of terebinth extract as a natural source of antioxidants and phytochemicals and addi

Plants respond to low nutrient availability by modifying root morphology and root system topology. Root responses to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) limitation may affect plant capacity to withstand water stress. But studies on the effect of nutrient availability on plant ability to uptake and transport water are scarce. In this study, we assess the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation on root morphology and root system topology in Pistacia lentiscus L seedlings, a common Mediterranean shrub, and relate these changes to hydraulic conductivity of the whole root system. Nitrogen and phos
