[The mother-placenta-fetus system in maternal thyroid diseases].

In maternal thyroid diseases, the placenta shows an increase in complications during pregnancy. There are signs of lesions as alterations, focal sclerosis, and fibrinoid necrosis. There is also a circulatory disorder as plethora and thrombosis. Progression in these changes correlates with the cases of miscarriage and other pathology in the obstetric history. The concurrence of obstetric and endocrine diseases increases the risk of pregnancy, labor, and delivery complications in different maternal thyroid diseases.

Intraplacental villous artery resistance indices and identification of placenta-mediated diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Placenta-mediated diseases (PMDs) including preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction are often characterized by shallow trophoblast invasion and incomplete spiral artery remodeling leading to impaired placental perfusion. In this context, umbilical artery (UA) Doppler can be used to detect high resistance to flow characteristic of very late-stage placental disease. We propose that evaluation of intraplacental villous artery (IPVA) resistance can provide earlier detection of increased resistance in placental flow. STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-five patients were recruited from the Ottawa H

In utero imaging of the placenta: importance for diseases of pregnancy.

Maurice Panigel demonstrated by X-rays, almost 40 years ago, placental maternal blood jets in non-human primates. Although to researchers the importance of the placenta is evident, in clinical obstetrical imaging, the fetus takes precedence. The placenta is imaged almost as an after thought and mostly to determine its location in the uterus. In animal species, the placenta was imaged with techniques which would be considered too invasive (or too costly for routine use) in humans, many pioneered by Panigel: radioangiography, radioisotopes scintigraphy, thermography, magnetic resonance imaging (

Deep transfer learning for detection of placenta-mediated diseases from ultrasound images.

Placenta-mediated diseases, such as preeclampsia (PE) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates, are associated with structural and functional changes in the placenta. While ultrasound is routinely performed during pregnancy, its potential for detecting such diseases using deep learning remains underexplored. This study presents a deep transfer learning approach using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to detect placenta-mediated diseases from ultrasound B-mode images of the human placenta ex vivo. This study is a secondary analysis of data from a prospective case-control study, where pla

[The role and research progress of gut microbiota in placenta-derived diseases].

Gut microbiota plays an important role in maintaining the normal function of intestinal tract, regulating the body's immunity, metabolism and other physiological processes. In recent years, the theory that gut microbiota dysbiosis affects the disease occurrence of various organ systems through the gut-organ axis has been gradually confirmed. Placental diseases of pregnancy includes early onset preeclampsia, fetal growth restriction, etc., the pathogenesis of which is unclear, but can cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. Researches show that gut microbiota dysbiosis has a certain correlation with

Potential risk indicators of retained placenta and other diseases in multiparous cows.

Retained placenta (RP), defined as fetal membranes not being expelled within 24 h after calving, is a costly disease in multiparous dairy cows that has been linked to immune suppression, infections, elevated lipid mobilization, and depleted status of antioxidants including α-tocopherol, and that increases the risk of other diseases (OD) in early lactation. Early detection of cows at increased risk of developing RP, OD, or both in early lactation could improve treatment success and result in improved milk production and reproductive performance. To identify risk indicators of RP, OD, or both, w

[Fetal growth restriction as the disease of the placenta].

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) as a common pregnancy complication is generally defined as the failure of a fetus to achieve its genetically determined full growth potential due to placental dysfunction. Early-onset (<32. gestational week) FGR is associated strongly with abnormal trophoblastic invasion and consequent placental insufficiency. Conditions leading to FGR are the disorders inherent to the fetal-placental-maternal unit, fetal malnutrition, resulting in a significantly increased risk of stillbirth, neonatal morbidity, neonatal death, and long-term adverse outcome. Once the fetal size,

Kidney-placenta crosstalk in health and disease.

Organ crosstalk allows the interaction between systems to adapt to a constant changing environment, maintaining homeostasis. The process of placentation and the new hormonal environment during pregnancy trigger physiological changes that modulate kidney function to control extracellular volume, acid-base balance and filtration of metabolic waste products. The bidirectional communication means that acute or chronic dysfunction of one organ can compromise the other. Abnormal placentation in pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders such as pre-eclampsia and HELLP (haemolysis, elevated liver enzym

The placenta is the center of the chronic disease universe.

Over the past quarter century it has become clear that adult onset chronic diseases like heart disease and type 2 diabetes have their roots in early development. The report by David Barker and colleagues showing an inverse relationship between birthweight and mortality from ischemic heart disease was the first clear-cut demonstration of fetal programming. Because fetal growth depends upon the placental capacity to transport nutrients from maternal blood, it has been a suspected causative agent since the original Barker reports. Epidemiological studies have shown that placental size and shape h

The placenta as the window to congenital heart disease.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is an increasing recognition that structural abnormalities and functional changes in the placenta can have deleterious effects on the development of the fetal heart. This article reviews the role of the placenta and the potential impact of placental insufficiency on fetuses with congenital heart disease. RECENT FINDINGS: The fetal heart and the placenta are directly linked because they develop concurrently with shared regulatory and signaling pathways. Placental disease is more common in pregnancies carrying a fetus with congenital heart disease and the fetal response

Relationship of hypertensive disease to abruptio placentae.

The purpose of the present retrospective study was to examine the relationship between hypertension and abruptio placentae. Two hundred sixty-five consecutive cases of abruption were reviewed, with an emphasis on the occurrence and severity of hypertensive disease. The results confirm a close relationship between abruptio placentae and hypertension. The incidence of abruption was highest with eclampsia (23.6%), followed by chronic hypertension (10.0%) and preeclampsia (2.3%). In addition, those with eclampsia and chronic hypertension had a significantly higher perinatal mortality than those wi

Nutrients and Microbiota in Lung Diseases of Prematurity: The Placenta-Gut-Lung Triangle.

Cardiorespiratory function is not only the foremost determinant of life after premature birth, but also a major factor of long-term outcomes. However, the path from placental disconnection to nutritional autonomy is enduring and challenging for the preterm infant and, at each step, will have profound influences on respiratory physiology and disease. Fluid and energy intake, specific nutrients such as amino-acids, lipids and vitamins, and their ways of administration -parenteral or enteral-have direct implications on lung tissue composition and cellular functions, thus affect lung development a

Review: The placenta is a programming agent for cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer in western nations in spite of declines in death rates following improvements in clinical care. It has been 20 years since David Barker and colleagues showed that slow rates of prenatal growth predict mortality from ischemic heart disease. Thus, fetal undergrowth and its associated cardiovascular diseases must be due, in part, to placental inadequacies. This conclusion is supported by a number of studies linking placental characteristics with various adult diseases. A "U" shaped relationship between placental-to-fetal weight ratio and heart

Ultrastructure of the human placenta in metabolic storage disease.

Eleven placentae and one fibroblast cell culture from pregnancies complicated by various inherited metabolic disorders, together with five chorionic villus biopsies from pregnancies at risk, were examined for ultrastructural evidence of accumulation of metabolites. Abnormal ultrastructural features were present as early as 10 weeks gestation. Myelin bodies were found in all placental cell types in a case of Niemann-Pick disorder and stromal cells showed marked vacuolation in Hurler's disease. Membranous arrays were occasionally identified in the lysosomes of stromal cells in a case of Sandhoff
