OBJECTIVE: There has been a large increase in reported cases of nonsynostotic plagiocephaly in infants since the adoption of supine sleeping recommendations to prevent sudden infant death syndrome. The objective of this study was to identify and quantify the determinants of nonsynostotic plagiocephaly in infants.
METHODS: One hundred infants who received a diagnosis of having nonsynostotic plagiocephaly were recruited as case patients and compared with 94 control subjects who were selected from a citywide database of infants. The infants all were aged between 2 and 12 months. Information conc

The dissertation, comprising a clinical intervention and three supporting studies, aimed to assess if it is possible to prevent nonsynostotic plagiocephaly while promoting safe infant sleeping practices. Five individuals were trained to assess cranial asymmetry and then reliability-tested; the interpreted results indicate substantial strength of rater-agreement. Intervention participants were allocated to group. Only intervention group nurses participated in the continuing education on plagiocephaly developed for nurses. A survey compared information intervention and control group parents rece

BACKGROUND: While the clinical differences between nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly and lambdoid craniosynostosis have been described, the radiographic differentiation between the two remains obscure. The aim of this study was to characterize morphological differences in the lambdoid suture between nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly and lambdoid craniosynostosis.
METHODS: Computed tomography scans of children clinically diagnosed with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly (n = 26) were compared with computed tomography scans from children diagnosed with lambdoid craniosynostosis (n =

BACKGROUND: It is known that nonsynostotic plagiocephaly does not spontaneously improve, and the craniofacial deformities that result from it. This study was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of helmet therapy for the nonsynostotic plagiocephaly patient, and to suggest a new treatment strategy based on this analysis.
METHODS: A total of 108 pediatric patients who had undergone helmet therapy after being diagnosed with nonsynostotic plagiocephaly were included in this study. The patients were classified according to the initiation age of the helmet therapy, severity, and helmet wearing ti

BACKGROUND: Nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly remains a diagnosis of concern in infancy. This study evaluates factors affecting the onset, treatment, and outcomes of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review and telephone survey were performed. A posterior occipital deformation severity score was used. Factors such as demographics, behavioral and helmet therapy, feeding patterns, torticollis, multiple gestation pregnancies, prematurity, and congenital nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly were evaluated.
RESULTS: One hundred five infants were identified

A total of 105 infants with nonsynostotic posterior plagiocephaly were treated using a helmet or by head positioning. Effect of treatment was scored using a cosmetic outcome score (0-10 points) assigned by the parents. The onset of the observed skull deformity correction was not different for the helmet vs. nonhelmet treatment. Improvement was significantly better and faster in the helmet group compared with nonhelmet treatment (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001, respectively).

BACKGROUND: The aim was to evaluate the intervention's effect on prevention and reversal of nonsynostotic plagiocephaly.
METHODS: Thirty-eight intervention group nurses were educated about nonsynostotic plagiocephaly and asked to follow guidelines; 18 control group nurses were not. In a longitudinal single-blinded clinical intervention, parents brought infants to well-child visits according to the national schedule. Cranial shape was assessed in 176 intervention and 92 control group infants at 2-, 4-, and 12-month visits.
RESULTS: Asymmetry at two months reversed by four months four times mo

OBJECTIVES: To document the evolution of cranial asymmetries in infants with signs of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly (NSOP) who were to undergo a course of four osteopathic treatments (in addition to the standard positioning recommendations) as well as to determine the feasibility of using this methodology to conduct a randomized clinical trial investigating the impact of osteopathic intervention for infants with NSOP.
DESIGN: Pilot clinical standardization project using pre-post design in which 12 infants participated. Ten infants presented an initial Oblique Diameter Difference Index

The aim of the project was to develop guidelines for nurses that can be incorporated into the Swedish child health care program to prevent nonsynostotic plagiocephaly in infants while still following sudden infant death syndrome preventive measures. Guidelines were developed by reviewing the literature, compiling evidence, appraising recommendations, and formulating a condensed version of relevant information for nurses. The guidelines were tested clinically in a Swedish pilot project.

Helmet therapy is an important nonsurgical approach for patients with nonsynostotic plagiocephaly, but its effectiveness may depend on certain anatomical features. We retrospectively examined the effects of helmet therapy according to the size of the anterior fontanelle. Two hundred patients with nonsynostotic plagiocephaly who underwent helmet therapy between 2016 and 2018 were included. Data regarding age at treatment onset and treatment duration were collected. Patients were divided into two groups depending on the age at treatment initiation: the 12-23 weeks group and the >23 weeks group.

The style and degree of cranial vault modification (CVM) can have a significant impact on the reliability of assigning crania into operational categories and correlates. These issues can, in turn, influence the interpretation of cultural practices in the archaeological record. If we intend to deploy head shape as a meaningful unit of analysis to address issues of anthropological significance, we need a reliable way to demarcate discrete categories. Here we employ 3D geometric morphometrics to study head shape variation and improve classification accuracy. The present study rendered 3D models o

The aim of the study is to test effectiveness of guidelines for nurses that can be incorporated into the child health care program to prevent nonsynostotic plagiocephaly (NSP) in infants while still following sudden infant death syndrome-preventive recommendations. When guidelines were followed as intended in a Swedish pilot study, only 8.5% of infants had some degree of NSP at 6 months, compared to 25.6% of infants in the comparison group. Results indicate that the early and regular implementation of these guidelines by nurses may be an effective way to prevent NSP.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of osteopathic manipulative therapy (OMTh) versus light touch therapy (LTT) in reducing cranial asymmetries in infants with nonsynostotic plagiocephaly (NSP).
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, parallel-group, single-center, LTT-controlled randomized clinical trial was conducted in the Department of Neonatology of Sant'Anna Hospital in Turin, Italy, from September 6, 2016 to February 20, 2020. We enrolled infants of 1 to 6 months of age with NSP, who were then randomly assigned to the study group (repositioning therapy plus six sessions of OMTh) o

PURPOSE: Despite growing evidence regarding nonsynostotic plagiocephaly and their repercussions on motor development, there is little evidence to support the use of manual therapy as an adjuvant option. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a therapeutic approach based on manual therapy as an adjuvant option on treatment duration and motor development in infants with severe nonsynostotic plagiocephaly.
METHODS: This is a randomised controlled pilot study. The study was conducted at a university hospital. Forty-six infants with severe nonsynostotic plagiocephaly (types 4-5 of th

Management of neonates with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly has been controversial, and there has been a lack of uniformity concerning its treatment. Patients with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly have been treated surgically or with cranial remodeling orthotic devices and have shown improvement in asymmetry. The cost of orthotic treatment has risen, and its validity has been contested by many third-party insurance payers. The effectiveness of orthotic treatment has not been adequately compared to the natural history of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly. A nonsurgical, nonorthot

BACKGROUND: Positional plagiocephaly is the most common cause of cranial asymmetry. The underlying cause of Chiari-1 malformation has many possible theories, and anecdotally some pediatric neurosurgeons have had experience of severe cases of positional brachycephaly with Chiari-1. However, to date, there have been no published cases linking nonsynostotic plagiocephaly with Chiari-1 malformation.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 18-month-old boy presented with a head injury. On examination he had a Glasgow Coma Score of 15 with no focal neurologic deficits, but he was noted to have marked posterior brachy
