The cycling of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in the ocean is closely linked to seawater alkalinity and the regulation of atmospheric CO2. In the modern pelagic ocean, almost all CaCO3 is produced by three groups of calcifying planktonic organisms: coccolithophores, foraminifers, and shelled pteropods. In this Review, we examine the differences in functional traits that define each group's distinctive role in the global carbon cycle and their sensitivity to climate change and ocean acidification. This synthesis reveals that a single representation of CaCO3 in climate models is unlikely to accuratel

The interplay between intrinsic population dynamics and environmental variation is still poorly understood. It is known, however, that even mild environmental noise may induce large fluctuations in population abundances. This is due to a resonance effect that occurs in communities on the edge of stability. Here, we use a simple predator-prey model to explore the sensitivity of plankton communities to stochastic environmental fluctuations. Our results show that the magnitude of resonance depends on the timescale of intrinsic population dynamics relative to the characteristic timescale of the en

We introduce a device developed to perform a 3D tracking of passive or active particles under flow, confined in a medium hundreds of micrometers wide. Micro-objects are placed inside a vertical glass capillary, and two mirrors are positioned behind it at a certain angle, making it possible to have the two reflections of the capillary on the same optical plane. A 3D reconstruction of the trajectories, captured with a single camera, is carried out along the vertical axis with micrometer-scale precision. To investigate the interaction between shear, the role of the gravity field, and motile micro

Monitoring the parameters and behavior of plankton makes it possible to assess the state of the aquatic ecosystem and detect the beginning of an environmental disaster at an early stage. In this respect, the most informative method for the in situ plankton study is underwater digital holography. This method allows obtaining information on the size, shape, and location of plankton individuals, as well as performing their classification and biotesting according to their behavioral responses using a submersible holographic camera non-invasively, in real time, and in the automatic mode. The monito

UNLABELLED: Temperature is known to affect organismal size, yet the underlying mechanism has been debated. Here, we develop a simple growth model of heterotrophic plankton and explain the temperature-size effect based on the demand and supply of oxygen. The model applies the growth rate-temperature relationship based on protein stability, capturing six data sets of a planktonic ciliate Urotricha. The model then computes the oxygen demand, based on the growth rate, which must be balanced by the diffusive uptake of oxygen. Because the smaller cell size favors oxygen uptake per cell volume, the p

Knowledge of the vertical migration pattern of sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) copepodites is necessary for designing efficient measures to prevent lice infestations on farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo Salar) in sea-cages. However, data can be challenging to acquire at a large scale under realistic circumstances without interfering with the natural behavior of the specimen. A mesocosm platform was built to help acquire this data consisting of a sensor package in an underwater housing being pulled up and down along a 11-meter-long transparent tube containing planktonic organisms while collectin

Driven by increasing anthropogenic CO2, the impact of ongoing climate change on the marine plankton ecosystem ultimately extends to higher trophic levels and the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nutrients. However, the impacts of multiple environmental changes on trophic interactions between predator and prey have still not been fully explored. Here we conducted incubation experiments to determine the temperature and CO2 sensitivities of marine phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in the western Arctic Ocean, where rapid climate change is taking place. The temperature sensitiv

Ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) is a nature-based technology for CO2 removal and storage, but little is known about its environmental safety. We tested a CO2-equilibrated OAE deployment in a close-to-natural community using in situ mesocosms in the oligotrophic subtropical North Atlantic and assessed metazoan zooplankton to inform about food web stability, structure, and production. In addition, a literature review complemented experimental results by summarizing physiological responses of marine animals to decreasing proton concentrations, or increased pH. The food web studied proved resis

Plankton dynamics lie at the core of biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem function, which makes dependable prediction essential. Neural network-based approximations show strong potential in capturing these nonlinear interactions due to their flexibility and efficiency. In this study, a dynamic nonlinear autoregressive exogenous neural network trained with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (ARX-LMA) is exploited on the nonlinear carbon thermal nutrient-plankton autonomous dynamics (NCTNP-AD) system for plankton population in the marine biosphere influenced by the impact of global warming and cli

Mercury (Hg) is considered a global pollutant, and the scientific community has shown great concern about its toxicity as it may affect the biota of entire systems, through bioaccumulation and bioamplification processes of its organic form, methylmercury (MeHg), along food web. However, few research studies deal with bioaccumulation of Hg from marine primary producers and the first-order consumers. So, this study aims to determine Hg distribution and concentration levels in phytoplankton and zooplankton in the Cabo Frio Bay, Brazil, a site influenced by coastal upwelling. The results from Hg s

Body size is a master variable in ecology that can predict ecosystem-level processes and reflect environmental conditions across diverse ecosystems. In freshwater ecosystems, the relationship between body size and biomass provides a powerful tool for characterizing community structure and trophic transfer efficiency. While these relationships are well established at the whole-community level, responses within plankton functional groups with distinct ecological characteristics have yet to be explored. In this study, we analysed plankton biomass-size relationships across > 550 Canadian lakes. Fo

Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations can increase by 100 000 times between seawater and marine phytoplankton, but levels vary across sites. To better understand how ecosystem properties affect variability in planktonic MeHg concentrations, we develop a model for MeHg uptake and trophic transfer at the base of marine food webs. The model successfully reproduces measured concentrations in phytoplankton and zooplankton across diverse sites from the Northwest Atlantic Ocean. Highest MeHg concentrations in phytoplankton are simulated under low dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations and ultrao

Selenium (Se), mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were determined in microplankton (⩾25μm), crustacean muscle tissue, in the muscle and liver of two fish species and tissues of a dolphin from a bay in the Brazilian Southeast coast. Differences were found between the fish and dolphin muscle and hepatic concentrations. Liver showed the highest concentrations of Se and Hg. Positive biotransference of MeHg from source to consumer was observed for all interactions, demonstrating that MeHg biomagnified along the food web. The pelagic food chain has the highest biomagnification potential when comp

Large genome databases have markedly improved our understanding of marine microorganisms1-5. Although these resources have focused on prokaryotes, genomes from many dominant marine lineages, such as Pelagibacter and Prochlorococcus, are conspicuously underrepresented. Here we present the Great Barrier Reef Microbial Genomes Database (GBR-MGD), comprising 5,283 prokaryotic genomes obtained from Great Barrier Reef seawater samples using Nanopore and Illumina sequencing, including a collection of high-quality genomes of underrepresented groups. We show that standard short-read assemblies miss the

Macrotidal estuaries are hydrodynamic pulse systems that continuously reconfigure coastal environments. While seasonal dynamics are well documented, the short-term mechanisms enabling plankton to persist in these hyperdynamic habitats remain poorly understood. We investigated how planktonic communities at a tropical Amazonian Ramsar site respond to high-frequency tidal oscillations. Integrating diel sampling with random forest and SHAP modeling revealed that extreme tidal energy acts as a severe ecological filter, driving a temporal decoupling between nutrient pulses during ebb flows and phyto

The activities of unicellular microbes dominate the ecology of the marine environment, but the chemical signals that determine behavioral interactions are poorly known. In particular, chemical signals between microbial predators and prey contribute to food selection or avoidance and to defense, factors that probably affect trophic structure and such large-scale features as algal blooms. Using defense as an example, I consider physical constraints on the transmission of chemical information, and strategies and mechanisms that microbes might use to send chemical signals. Chemical signals in a lo
