Demand for agricultural crop continues to escalate in response to increasing population and damage of prime cropland for cultivation. Research interest is diverted to utilize soils with marginal plant production. Moisture stress has negative impact on crop growth and productivity. The plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and plant growth regulators (PGR) are vital for plant developmental process under moisture stress. The current study was carried out to investigate the effect of PGPR and PGRs (Salicylic acid and Putrescine) on the physiological activities of chickpea grown in sandy soi

Viral infections are major contributors to crop yield loss and represent a significant threat to sustainable agriculture. Plants respond to virus attacks by activating sophisticated signalling cascades that initiate multiple defence mechanisms. Notably, several phytohormones, including salicylic acid (SA), jasmonic acid (JA), abscisic acid (ABA), and ethylene (ET), are known to shape these defence responses. In recent years, various plant growth regulators (PGRs) such as melatonin, carrageenans, sulfated fucan oligosaccharides, nitric oxide (NO), brassinosteroids (BRs), and hydrogen sulfide (H

Smoke plays an intriguing role in promoting the germination of seeds of many species following a fire. Recently, a bicyclic compound containing a condensed butenolide moiety, 3-methyl-2H-furo[2,3-c]pyran-2-one (1), was reported as a potent germination promoter from plant-derived smoke. In this study, a related butenolide, 3,4,5-trimethylfuran-2(5H)-one (2), which inhibits germination and significantly reduces the effect of 1 when applied simultaneously, was also isolated from plant-derived smoke. The interaction of these compounds with opposing actions on seed germination may have important ec

A range of man-made activities promote the enrichment of world-wide agricultural soils with a myriad of chemical pollutants including cadmium (Cd). Owing to its significant toxic consequences in plants, Cd has been one of extensively studied metals. However, sustainable strategies for minimising Cd impacts in plants have been little explored. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are known for their role in the regulation of numerous developmental processes. Among major PGRs, plant hormones (such as auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, ethylene and salicylic acid), nitric o

Plants are central to global food production, and the pursuit of sustainability aims to enhance or preserve food quality while safeguarding the environment. Due to their immobility, plants are unable to evade unfavourable climatic setups or interactions with other living creatures. Upon their interaction with insect herbivores, plants face biotic stress, which is a constant challenge for plants, causing molecular, physiological, and biochemical changes and reducing their productivity. To combat biotic stress caused by herbivores, plants have evolved intricate defence mechanisms through growth

Brassinosteroids (BRs) are essential steroidal phytohormones that regulate plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. Recent studies have demonstrated the important roles of BRs in enhancing plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, including drought, salinity, temperature extremes, heavy metal toxicity, and oxidative stress, as well as biotic stresses caused by pathogens and herbivores. This review summarizes current advances in BR biosynthesis, metabolism, transport, and signaling pathways, focusing on key components that mediate stress adaptation. We discuss the physiolo

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are currently one of the widely used pesticides, as being considered to have relatively low toxicity compared with other pesticides. However, widespread use may lead to overexposure from multiple sources. Exposure to PGRs is associated with different toxicity that affects many organs in our body, such as the toxicity to testis, ovaries, liver, kidneys and brain. In addition, some PGRs are considered potential endocrine disrupting chemicals. Evidence exists for development and reproductive toxicity associated with prenatal and postnatal exposure in both animals an

Invasive plants cause a global loss of biodiversity, pose a major threat to the environment and economy, and also significantly affect agricultural production and food security. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are widely used in agricultural production and might also affect invasive weeds distributed around crops in various ways. At present, there are few studies concerning whether there are significant effects of PGRs on invasive weeds. In this study, two widely used PGRs in paddy fields, gibberellic acid (GA) and paclobutrazol (PAC), were applied on Oryza sativa and a noxious weed Alternanthe

Soil contamination with heavy metals severely threatens food security and human health worldwide. Heavy metal contamination must be controlled through sustainable and economical technologies. To enhance the phytoextraction of lead (Pb), the plants with resistance against Pb stress and maximum production of biomass could serve as a potential candidate for the phytoremediation of Pb-contaminated soils. The current study was conducted to illuminate the effect of gibberellic acid (GA3), indole acetic acid (IAA), and fertilizers (NPK) on plant growth and Pb phytoextraction capabilities of Tagetes m

The study investigated the adaptability of Moringa oleifera to saline conditions, focusing on its hormesis behavior. It also examined how various plant growth regulators affected growth, physiological parameters, and bioactive compounds of moringa. In the first phase, different NaCl stress levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mM) were applied. Notably, significant stimulation was observed at 100 mM stress for growth, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total chlorophyll content while 150 mM stress had a marked inhibitory effect, with survival decreasing at 200 and 250 mM NaCl levels. A 38%

The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective role of grape seed extract (containing proanthocyandin) against the adverse effects of plant growth regulators (GA3 (gibberellic acid) and IAA (indoleacetic acid)). The present data showed that the administration of either GA3 and IAA caused undesirable changes in both hepatic and testicular structure. This was evidenced by a disturbed hepatic strands, pyknotic nuclei, central vein with collapsed endothelium, dilatation in bile sinusoids, congested blood vessel, binucleatd hepatocytes, lymphocytic infiltration, vacuolation, giant h

BACKGROUND: Pesticide residue analysis is a critical component of food safety monitoring. While multiresidue methods based on LC- or GC-MS are widely available, the analysis of highly polar or ionic pesticides remains challenging due to poor chromatographic retention, low recoveries, and repeatability.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a simple, rapid, and robust analytical method for the determination of highly polar or ionic pesticides and their metabolites in selected agricultural commodities.
METHODS: The method targets herbicides, including glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid, g

Strigolactones (SLs) and karrikins (KARs) are both butenolide molecules that play essential roles in plant growth and development. SLs are phytohormones, with SLs having known functions within the plant they are produced in, while KARs are found in smoke emitted from burning plant matter and affect seeds and seedlings in areas of wildfire. It has been suggested that SL and KAR signaling may share similar mechanisms. The α/β hydrolases DWARF14 (D14) and KARRIKIN INSENSITIVE 2 (KAI2), which act as receptors of SL and KAR, respectively, both interact with the F-box protein MORE AXILLARY GROWTH 2

Parkinson's disease is characterized by an abnormal accumulation of alpha synuclein (α-syn) in different regions of the central nervous system. At present, only palliative pharmacological treatments are available for Parkinson´s disease. Immunotherapy is considered an alternative to treat Parkinson's disease, and plants are a convenient alternative platform for biopharmaceutical production. When compared to other systems, plants are particularly attractive because they offer cost-effectiveness, large-scale production, and enhanced safety. Therefore, this study aimed to establish a carrot cell

Cassava is an important root crop whose seed system is undeveloped. Micropropagation of explants in vitro has the potential of addressing the challenge of the unavailability of healthy cassava planting materials. Therefore, the study determined the effect of sterilization and plant growth regulators on cassava explants to produce certified disease-free plants of commonly used cultivars at the coast of Kenya. The apical nodes drawn from the three cultivars of cassava, Tajirika and Kibandameno and Taita, were used as explants. The sterilant sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at 5, 10 and 15% and 70% et
