Seed coating with phages for sustainable plant biocontrol of plant pathogens and influence of the seed coat mucilage.

Pathogens resistant to classical control strategies pose a significant threat to crop yield, with seeds being a major transmission route. Bacteriophages, viruses targeting bacteria, offer an environmentally sustainable biocontrol solution. In this study, we isolated and characterized two novel phages, Athelas and Alfirin, which infect Pseudomonas syringae and Agrobacterium fabrum, respectively, and included the recently published Pfeifenkraut phage infecting Xanthomonas translucens. Using a simple immersion method, phages coated onto seeds successfully lysed bacteria post air-drying. The seed

Pectin Mucilage Adhesion on a Flat Substrate: A Molecular Simulation Approach to Plant-Seed Adhesion.

We investigate the adhesion of pectin-mucilage-coated seeds to substrate surfaces, focusing on the effect of water content. It is known that the adhesion of pectin mucilage increases with water loss, eventually dropping to zero beyond a certain point. To explore this phenomenon, we develop and parametrize a coarse-grained many-body dissipative-particle dynamics (MDPD) model. First, we examine the adhesion of water between two flat surfaces to understand the factors influencing the pull-off force. Then, we determine the pull-off force of polymer solutions with varying pectin concentrations. Our

Improvement of Lidocaine Local Anesthetic Action Using Lallemantia royleana Seed Mucilage as an Excipient.

Lallemantia royleana (Balangu) is a well known Iranian medicinal plant that its seed mucilage has many applications in modern pharmacology. Plant mucilage traditionally was used as a gel supplement, and natural matrix for sustained release of drugs. But it seems that these compounds are not a simple additive and also have many undiscovered pharmacological properties. In this research, the anesthetic action of gel prepared from Balangu mucilage alone and its mixture with lidocaine hydrochloride are compared with the effect of commercial 2% lidocaine gel by rat tail flick test. Mucilage of Balan

A modified SDS-LiCl method for high quality RNA isolation from mucilage rich okra Tissues and downstream virus detection.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) is an economically important vegetable crop and an important host of several viral pathogens, including tobacco streak virus (TSV). Reliable molecular diagnostics and gene expression studies require high-quality RNA; however, RNA isolation from okra is particularly challenging due to the abundance of mucilage, polysaccharides, and phenolic compounds that co-extract with nucleic acids and interfere with downstream applications. In the present study, a modified SDS-LiCl RNA extraction method was developed to effectively remove mucilage and obtain high-quality RNA

Analysis of natural okra extracts as corrosion inhibitors for mild steel in acidic medium.

Plant extracts have been shown to effectively inhibit metal corrosion. Using the Box-Behnken design, gravimetric, and electrochemical techniques, analyses were designed to investigate the anti-corrosion potential of okra in a 1M HCl medium. The inhibition performances derived from the various methods were in good agreement, demonstrating that physio-chemisorption was effective and adhered to the Langmuir isotherm model. The efficiency of okra mucilage extract was 96% at a much lower concentration compared to 91.2% and 88.4% for the unsieved extract and gelly-okra filtrate, respectively. FTIR r

Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Mucilage: An Approach for the Full Utilization of Ora-Pro-Nóbis Leaves.

Ora-pro-nóbis (OPN) leaves are remarkably high in mucilage content. Sustainable processing methods, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), can enhance the yield and functionality of OPN mucilage (OPNM). The resulting residue (OPNR) can be utilized to support circular economy approaches. This study aimed to determine the optimal conditions for OPNM extraction and subsequently characterize OPNR. OPNM was extracted by UAE at different power levels (200, 400, 600, and 800 W) and by conventional methods (water bath extraction at 25°C and 80°C). After extraction, OPNR was separated by filtrat

Assessment of coffee endophytic yeasts for efficient mucilage removal and consistent quality improvement in coffee production.

Endophytic yeasts are commonly isolated from coffee plants, yet their capacity for mucilage removal remains underexplored. In this study, 42 pectinolytic yeast strains were isolated from coffee cherries and classified into five species. Among them, Pichia kluyveri YE7 showed superior mucilage removal and cold tolerance, achieving complete mucilage degradation within 4-12 h at 5-30 °C. Genomic analysis identified multiple genes encoding pectinases, cellulases, and hemicellulases, consistent with its enzymatic capacity. Fermentation with P. kluyveri YE7 primarily altered alkane levels in green c

Autophagy is required for gamete differentiation in the moss Physcomitrella patens.

Autophagy, a major catabolic process in eukaryotes, was initially related to cell tolerance to nutrient depletion. In plants autophagy has also been widely related to tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses (through the induction or repression of programmed cell death, PCD) as well as to promotion of developmentally regulated PCD, starch degradation or caloric restriction important for life span. Much less is known regarding its role in plant cell differentiation. Here we show that macroautophagy, the autophagy pathway driven by engulfment of cytoplasmic components by autophagosomes and its s

Nitrogen-fixing bacteria and Oxalis - evidence for a vertically inherited bacterial symbiosis.

BACKGROUND: Plant-endophyte symbioses often revolve around nitrogen metabolism, and involve varying degrees of intimacy. Although evidence for vertical inheritance of nitrogen-fixing endophytic bacteria is increasing, it is confined mostly to crop plants, and to date no such system has been reported for geophytes. METHODS: Bacterial endophytes associated with Oxalis, the most species-rich geophytic genus form the Cape Flora in southern Africa was studied. Culturable endophytes were isolated from surface-sterilized vegetative and reproductive plant organs for six host species at three location
