Effect of plant oils on Candida albicans.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Candida species, notably Candida albicans, is the major fungal pathogen in humans. It is a dimorphic fungus capable of causing superficial mucosal infections, as well as systemic infections, in immunocompromised individuals. The factors responsible for its pathogenesis are still not fully understood and increasing resistance to commonly used antifungal agents necessitates the search for new formulations. METHODS: The inhibitory effect of 30 different plant oils on Candida albicans isolated from clinical samples was evaluated. The antifungal agent fluconazole was used as a

Virucidal Efficacy of Organic Acids and Plant Essential Oils.

Currently, the predominant commercially available disinfectants and sanitizers are formulated with active ingredients including alcohol, halogenated compounds (e.g., sodium hypochlorite), surfactants, oxidizing agents (eg., hydrogen peroxide), and quaternary ammonium compounds. Natural products represent an alternative since they are often effective microbicides and are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) due to their long history of use. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of several organic acids and plant essential oils against three bacteriophages (MS2, ΦX174, PR772) wit

Plant essential oils against woody plant fungal pathogens: chemical composition, antifungal mechanisms, and translational challenges.

Woody plants are threatened by fungal and oomycete pathogens that cause root and wood rots, cankers, vascular wilts, dieback, fruit decay, and other diseases. Meanwhile, intensive production systems and repeated fungicide use have raised concerns about resistance, environmental persistence, and non-target effects. Essential oils (EOs) have emerged as promising natural antimicrobial resources, yet their effectiveness depends strongly on chemical composition, pathogen susceptibility, concentration, formulation, and application strategy. This review synthesizes current evidence on EO-based manage

[Peculicidal activity of plant essential oils and their based preparations].

The peculicidal activity of eight plant essential oils in 75% isopropyl alcohol was in vitro investigated. Of them, the substances that were most active against lice were tea tree (Melaleuca), eucalyptus, neem, citronella (Cymbopogon nardus), and clove (Syzygium aromaticum) oils; KT50 was not more than 3 minutes on average; KT95 was 4 minutes. After evaporating the solvent, only five (tea tree, cassia, clove, anise (Anisum vulgare), and Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum) oils) of the eight test botanical substances were active against lice. At the same time, KT50 and KT95 showed 1.5-5-fol

The Dual Benefit of Plant Essential Oils against Tuta absoluta.

Plant essential oils (PEOs) are being studied as a potential alternative to synthetic pesticides in agriculture. PEOs have the potential to control pests both directly, by being toxic or repellent to pests, and indirectly, by activating plant's defense mechanisms. In this study, the effectiveness of five PEOs (Achillea millefolium, Allium sativum, Rosmarinus officinallis, Tagetes minuta, and Thymus zygis) on controlling Tuta absoluta and their impact on the predator Nesidiocoris tenuis was examined. The study revelead that PEOs from A. millefolium and A. sativum-sprayed plants significantly re

Beyond Autoxidation and Lipoxygenases: Fatty Acid Oxidation Products in Plant Oils.

For decades, research on oxidation of linoleic acid (LA, C18:2 n6) and α-linolenic acid (ALA, C18:3 n3) in plant oils has focused on autoxidatively formed and lipoxygenase-derived 9-hydro(pero)xy- and 13-hydro(pero)xy-LA and -ALA. Here, using a non-targeted approach, we show that other hydroxy fatty acids are more abundant in plant oils. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses unveiled highly abundant peaks in flaxseed and rapeseed oils. Using authentic reference standards, seven of the peaks were identified as 9-, 10-, 12-, 13-, and 15-HODE as

Anesthetic activity of plant essential oils on Cyprinus carpio (koi carp).

The aims of this study were to investigate the anesthetic and cytotoxic effects of essential oils (EOs) of Ocimum basilicum (OBO), O. canum (OCO), and O. sanctum (OSO) on Cyprinus carpio (koi carp). For anesthetic effect, induction time to surgical anesthesia and recovery time were determined. For cytotoxicity effect, viability of fish peripheral blood nuclear cells (PBMCs) was investigated. Results indicated that increasing oil concentration caused significant (p < 0.01) decrease of induction time. OSO at 100, 200, and 300 mg/L gave the induction time of 169.5 ± 10.2, 62.8 ± 2.3, 45.3 ± 2.2 s

Trichloroethylene cometabolic degradation by Rhodococcus sp. L4 induced with plant essential oils.

Cometabolic degradation of TCE by toluene-degrading bacteria has the potential for being a cost-effective bioremediation technology. However, the application of toluene may pose environmental problems. In this study, several plant essential oils and their components were examined as alternative inducer for TCE cometabolic degradation in a toluene-degrading bacterium, Rhodococcus sp. L4. Using the initial TCE concentration of 80 microM, lemon and lemongrass oil-grown cells were capable of 20 +/- 6% and 27 +/- 8% TCE degradation, which were lower than that of toluene-grown cells (57 +/- 5%). Essential Oils of Lamiaceae Family Plants as Antifungals.

The incidence of fungal infections has been steadily increasing in recent years. Systemic mycoses are characterized by the highest mortality. At the same time, the frequency of infections caused by drug-resistant strains and new pathogens e.g., Candida auris increases. An alternative to medicines may be essential oils, which can have a broad antimicrobial spectrum. Rich in the essential oils are plants from the Lamiaceae family. In this review are presented antifungal activities of essential oils from 72 Lamiaceae plants. More than half of these have good activity (minimum inhibitory concentra

Formulation of Environmentally Safe Graffiti Remover Containing Esterified Plant Oils and Sugar Surfactant.

The removal of graffiti or over-painting requires special attention in order to not induce the surface destruction but to also address all of the important eco-compatibility concerns. Because of the necessity to avoid the use of volatile and toxic petroleum-based solvents that are common in cleaning formulations, much attention has recently been paid to the design of a variety of sustainable formulations that are based on biodegradable raw materials. In the present contribution we propose a new approach to graffiti cleaning formulations that are composed of newly synthesized green solvents suc

Plant essential oils and potassium metabisulfite as repellents for Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, is a globally invasive pest of soft-skinned fruit. Females oviposit into ripening fruit and larvae cause direct destruction of tissues. As many plant essential oils are permitted food additives, they may provide a safe means of protecting fruit from D. suzukii infestation in both conventional and organic production systems. Twelve oils and potassium metabisulfite (KMS) were screened in the laboratory as repellents for D. suzukii flies. Most essential oils deterred D. suzukii flies from cotton wicks containing attractive raspberry juice. Peppermint o

Quantitation of triacylglycerols from plant oils using charged aerosol detection with gradient compensation.

Quantitative analysis of triacylglycerols (TGs) in plant oils and animal fats by normalization of peak areas can lead to erroneous results due to the large response differences with common HPLC detectors between the various TGs. The charged aerosol detector (CAD), that generates an almost universal response for non-volatile compounds, was combined with non-aqueous reversed-phase HPLC (NARP-HPLC) to develop a simple quantitative method, without need for RFs, for the analysis of complex natural TG mixtures from plant oils.
