Topological equivalence of stomata distribution patterns across vascular plants.

Stomata are ancient anatomical structures on leaves that regulate the exchange of water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide between plants and the atmosphere. Acting as valve-like gateways between internal tissues and the external environment, stomata may function as locally interacting networks. Theoretical and experimental evidence suggests that local interactions among neighboring stomata influence their function and spatial arrangement. From this perspective, analyzing stomatal distributions as networks may yield novel insights into observed spatial patterns and their generative mechanisms.

CO2-sensitive K+ channel traffic affects stomata and whole-plant water use.

Stomata are pores at the leaf surface that facilitate CO2 entry for photosynthesis while controlling transpirational water loss. Stomatal movements are governed by reversible changes in turgor and cell volume, driven by the transport of osmotic solute across the membrane of guard cells surrounding the pore. Membrane transport depends on the activities of transporters and ion channels present at the membrane and also on their abundance, determined by vesicle traffic. Although much is known about how pumps and ion channels in the membrane are regulated, this is not the case for vesicle trafficki

Uptake via the leaf surface allows plants to perceive volatiles with closed stomata.

Plants can detect threats by perceiving airborne chemical signals, but how these volatiles are taken up by the leaves is not well understood. Stomata are generally considered the major uptake pathway. However, as stomata close at night or during drought, this may severely limit the capacity of plants to sense volatiles. Using the crassulacean Kalanchoë laxiflora, which possesses crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) leaves that open their stomata at night and C3 leaves that open their stomata during the day, we uncover that the leaf surface functions as an alternative volatile uptake pathway that

A Stomata-Infiltratable SERS Nanosensor for Real-Time Monitoring of Hydrogen Sulfide Dynamics in Plants.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a key gaseous regulator in plant stress responses, but its spatiotemporal dynamics in living plants remain poorly understood due to the lack of noninvasive sensing tools. Here, we report a stomata-infiltratable SERS nanosensor based on Au@Ag@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles for real-time monitoring of endogenous H2S. The sensor, with an enhancement factor of ∼6.07 × 109 and a detection limit of 15 nM, efficiently infiltrates leaves of diverse species (Arabidopsis, spinach, and tomato). Real-time monitoring revealed that H2S accumulation kinetics are stress-specific and o

Ozone dry deposition through plant stomata: Multi-model comparison with flux observations and the role of water stress as part of AQMEII4 Activity 2.

A substantial portion of tropospheric O 3 dry deposition occurs after diffusion of O 3 through plant stomata. Simulating stomatal uptake of O 3 in 3D atmospheric chemistry models is important in the face of increasing drought induced declines in stomatal conductance and enhanced ambient O 3 . Here, we present a comparison of the stomatal component of O 3 dry deposition eg s from chemical transport models and estimates of eg s from observed CO 2 , latent heat, and O 3 flux. The dry deposition schemes were configured as single-point models forced with data collecte

Effect of railway engines emission on the micromorphology of some field plants.

Plant species as indicator is the most common method used to indicate the effects of pollution on plants. However, the present study explores the usage of micromorphological parameters of the plant species as the indicators. The plants selected for the present studies included Croton bonplandianum, Cannabis sativa and Calotropis procera. The parameters examined were (1) abnormalities of stomata, (2) number of stomata per unit area, (3) number of epidermal cells per unit area, (4) stomatal index. The present studies on these field plants revealed that diesel engines emission caused appreciable

Herbivory-Induced Stomatal Opening Triggers the Dispersal of an Invasive Insect Herbivore.

Stomata play important roles in plant responses to phytopathogens, but less is known about their roles in plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivore damage commonly closes stomata but also elicits the release of herbivory-induced plant volatiles, important mediators of plant-herbivore interactions. Here, we examined the responses in tomato plants attacked by the invasive tomato leafminer (Phthorimaea absoluta), the larvae of which performed better on infested plants, while ovipositing adults were repelled by larvae-infested plants, which were distinct from those induced by two other tomato pests,

Plant communication: More than one road to a plant's nose.

Plants perceive volatiles emitted by themselves or neighbours as danger signals. Although stomata were considered the main entrance, a new study implicates the leaf surface as an alternative, allowing plants to smell what is going on even with stomata closed.

Plasmopara viticola effector PvRxLR24 (a potential phosphatase) interferes grapevine stomatal immunity by targeting VvOST1.

Numerous pathogens invade plants through stomata, and plants, on the other hands, could close the stomata after sensing the pathogens PAMPs. Subsequently, pathogens could overcome this plant immune response with their phytotoxins and effectors. A previous study showed that Plasmopara viticola, a strictly obligate biotrophic oomycete, could inhibit the Vitis vinifera stomatal closure to promote infection. However, the underlying mechanism stimulating the stomata movement is still poorly understood. Here we demonstrate that PvRxLR24, an effector from P. viticola, functions analogously to a phosp

Using Clear Nail Polish to Make Arabidopsis Epidermal Impressions for Measuring the Change of Stomatal Aperture Size in Immune Response.

Plant stomata are an essential route for bacterial pathogens to entry inside host tissue and cause diseases. As an important defense mechanism, plant stomata can actively restrict bacterial invasion by dynamically regulating the opening, closing, and reopening of stomatal guard cells. Therefore, accurately measuring the stomatal aperture size during the bacterial pathogenesis is an important approach to study the stomata related immunity. Several methods have been developed for stomatal aperture measurement. Here, we described a detailed protocol of using clear nail polish to make Arabidopsis

An optimization method for measuring the stomata in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) under multiple abiotic stresses.

As a gateway for gas exchange, pores regulate the transport of air and water in carbon assimilation, respiration, and transpiration to quickly adapt to environmental changes. Therefore, the study of stomatal movement characteristics of plants is helpful to strengthen the understanding of the mechanism of plant response to multi-environmental stress, and can improve the function of plant resistance to stresses. The stomatal movement of Arabidopsis leaves was observed by staining the stomata with rhodamine 6G, but this method has not been reported in other plant leaf stomata studies. Taking cass

Ontogenetic changes in foliar features and psoralen content of Psoralea corylifolia Linn. exposed to SO2 stress.

Field-grown Psoralea corylifolia plants were exposed to 0.5 ppm and 1.0 ppm concentrations of sulphur dioxide gas and sampled for observation at the pre-flowering, flowering and post-flowering stages of plant ontogeny. One ppm SO2 concentration caused a significant decline in leaf number and leaf area per plant, total leaf dry weight, and the size and amount of midrib vasculature. The density and size of stomata decreased and many stomata were damaged. Interestingly new epidermis developed oversome of the damaged leaf stomata, thus showing a unique defence strategy against SO2 stress through d

Viewing Stomata in Action: Autonomous in Planta Imaging of Individual Stomatal Movement.

Stomata regulate plant gas exchange under changing environments, but observations of single stomata dynamics in planta are sparse. We developed a compact microscope system that can measure the kinetics of tens of stomata in planta simultaneously, with sub-minute time resolution. Darkfield imaging with green light was used to create 3D stacks from which 2D surface projections were constructed to resolve stomatal apertures. Stomatal dynamics of Chrysanthemum morifolium (Chrysanthemum) and Zea mays (Maize) under changing light intensity were categorized, and a kinetic model was fitted to the data

Responses of hawaiian plants to volcanic sulfur dioxide: stomatal behavior and foliar injury.

Hawaiian plants exposed to volcanic sulfur dioxide showed interspecific differences in leaf injury that are related to sulfur dioxide-induced changes in stomatal condutance. Species with leaves that did not close stomata developed either chlorosis or necrosis, whereas leaves of Metrosideros collina closed stomata and showed no visual symptoms of sulfur dioxide stress.

GOLDEN 2-LIKE transcription factors for chloroplast development affect ozone tolerance through the regulation of stomatal movement.

Stomatal movements regulate gas exchange, thus directly affecting the efficiency of photosynthesis and the sensitivity of plants to air pollutants such as ozone. The GARP family transcription factors GOLDEN 2-LIKE1 (GLK1) and GLK2 have known functions in chloroplast development. Here, we show that Arabidopsis thaliana (A. thaliana) plants expressing the chimeric repressors for GLK1 and -2 (GLK1/2-SRDX) exhibited a closed-stomata phenotype and strong tolerance to ozone. By contrast, plants that overexpress GLK1/2 exhibited an open-stomata phenotype and higher sensitivity to ozone. The plants ex

Iron accumulation in leaf trichomes and stomata of tomato as an iron reservoir provided by iron-citric acid chelate under limey soil conditions.

Iron (Fe) is an important mineral needed for plant growth and development. Calcareous (limey) soils cause decline in Fe availability leading to chlorosis in leaves. The correction of Fe chlorosis can be succeeded by the application organic acids. In the present study, we chelated Fe-citrate complex solution, compared with Fe-EDDHA fertilizer, and evaluated the effects of the Fe-citrate chelates on tomato under limey soil condition. The study was conducted in a controlled greenhouse. "Joker F1" cultivar tomato seedlings were used as the material. The seedlings were planted in the 4-L pots fille

Does stomatal patterning in amphistomatous leaves minimize the CO2 diffusion path length within leaves?

Photosynthesis is co-limited by multiple factors depending on the plant and its environment. These include biochemical rate limitations, internal and external water potentials, temperature, irradiance and carbon dioxide ( C O 2 ). Amphistomatous leaves have stomata on both abaxial and adaxial leaf surfaces. This feature is considered an adaptation to alleviate C O 2 diffusion limitations in productive environments as the diffusion path length from stomate to chloroplast is effectively halved in amphistomatous leaves. Plants may also reduce C O 2 limitations through other aspects of optim

The regulation of stomatal closure as a key factor to benefit from rising atmospheric [CO2] in rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Stomata, specialized pores on leaf epidermis, regulate CO2 uptake and water evaporation in terrestrial plants. Since environmental and biochemical stimuli affect stomatal aperture, its regulation is strongly correlated with photosynthesis. Particularly in rice (Oryza sativa L.), it was demonstrated that stomatal conductance (gs) is a major determinant of photosynthetic rate under well-watered conditions. However, little is known about the impact of altered stomatal regulation under CO2 enrichment on rice leaf physiology and metabolism. In this study, we analyse the physiological and proteomic

Disruption of a gene encoding C4-dicarboxylate transporter-like protein increases ozone sensitivity through deregulation of the stomatal response in Arabidopsis thaliana.

To understand better the plant response to ozone, we isolated and characterized an ozone-sensitive (ozs1) mutant strain from a set of T-DNA-tagged Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Columbia. The mutant plants show enhanced sensitivity to ozone, desiccation and sulfur dioxide, but have normal sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide, low temperature and high light levels. The T-DNA was inserted at a single locus which is linked to ozone sensitivity. Identification of the genomic sequences flanking the T-DNA insertion revealed disruption of a gene encoding a transporter-like protein of the tellurite resistan
